Agatio is one of the two Proxian antagonists who were featured in Golden Sun: The Lost Age. His partner is Karst, and both of them worked under Alex.

Background[edit]

Agatio was a member of the Mars Clan living in Prox. He was one of the most powerful warriors there and seemed to be second only to Saturos. Agatio was very aggressive and showed hints of being power-hungry, to the point where he hoped for the day when the rest of Weyard would kneel before the Proxians, although there were also times when he was surprisingly level-headed with a clear handle on complex situations. Saturos and Menardi were the ones chosen to embark on a quest to awaken alchemy in the world, due to the extinction that Prox faced from dropping temperatures. Agatio and Karst stayed behind, but they had conducted research on the four lighthouses which had to be lit, and this was apparently vital to their successes.

When time passed without word from Saturos and Menardi, Agatio and Karst were dispatched in a ship as the search party. The shifts that came from the lighting of the Venus Lighthouse then cut them off from the Western Sea and Prox. They later arrived at Indra, where Agatio stayed in the ship while Karst scouted for information. She returned with the news that Saturos and Menardi had died after a battle with Isaac and his friends. The two also met up with Alex, whom had traveled with Saturos and Menardi and proceeded to join with them. Agatio had mixed feelings about Alex, as he commended him for his foresight, but he became increasingly frustrated at how cryptic he was and how unclear his motives were. At the same time, Agatio was aware that Alex was mostly using them, but Agatio did not really care for the most part, although this might have been because of his plans to eventually betray Alex. They decided to continue Saturos's quest and light the remaining two lighthouses. As they set off, Alex also made them aware that Felix's group was also trying to activate the lighthouses.

This trio met up with Felix's group at Champa. Agatio was unimpressed by the lot of them, and Alex did not try to hide the fact that he was mostly using Agatio and Karst as intimidation to pressure Felix's group into progressing to the next lighthouse. After all, only Felix's group had a Jupiter Adept, which was needed for the Jupiter Lighthouse. Agatio, Karst and Alex still went ahead to the Jupiter Lighthouse. They saw that Isaac's group was also exploring it, and they went into action to avenge the deaths of Saturos and Menardi. Agatio and Karst, acting against Alex's will, set a trap for one of them which wound up catching two, and they were then able to overpower and defeat the remaining two party members, Isaac and Ivan. They were ready to finish off Isaac when Felix and his group intervened. Agatio and Karst were doubly annoyed that Felix was standing in the way of Isaac and also had not yet lit the beacon. Agatio was ready to fight Felix as well, but Karst advised him to stand down since they were outnumbered and weakened from their fight with Isaac. Agatio still had Felix swear to light the Venus beacon immediately and also had Felix take the Mars Star from Isaac, which Alex had told them about and which was needed to ignite the last beacon. The Proxians went to the lighthouse's aerie ahead of Felix to make sure he went through with activating the lighthouse.

They witnessed the lighting of the beacon and then immediately turned on Felix, because the last lighthouse was the Mars Lighthouse and was located near Prox. Agatio and Karst believed that scaling it would be no problem for just the two of them, so they no longer needed Felix and were ready to kill him. They stole the Mars Star and fought Felix immediately, while only Piers was with him, but Jenna and Sheba eventually arrived to help him. If they were defeated in battle, Agatio and Karst would try to talk Felix into finishing them off, but Alex arrived and saved them. If Agatio and Karst won the battle, they would instead be stopped from finishing Felix off by Alex's arrival. The three of them departed from the lighthouse afterwards, and the Proxians parted ways with Alex as they returned to Prox to take on the Mars Lighthouse by themselves. It was implied that Agatio also brought several men with him to attack the lighthouse, but if so they were presumably killed. Agatio and Karst could not properly navigate Mars Lighthouse due to it being frozen over. The Wise One eventually appeared before them and told them that they lacked the will to progress any further. It transformed both of them into a pair of mindless Flame Dragons, and in this form they attacked Felix's group. They were defeated, at which point they reverted into their true forms. Agatio and Karst were then left on the floor, disoriented and dying. They slowly recalled the events leading up to this and realized that they were cold, despite the Mars Clan's usual immunity to being cold. Agatio then recognized Felix and passed the Mars Star on to him. He hoped to cling to life long enough to see the beacon ignited so that he would know that his death was not in vain. It is unknown how much longer Agatio and Karst were able to live, although the Proxians' comments at the end of the game imply that they did die.

Abilities[edit]

Agatio is a Mars Adept, and so most of his moves are types of fire-based Psynergy moves. His most powerful moves seemed to be the Meteor Blow and Rising Dragon. He also had a few moves which affected his opponents' status. Agatio uniquely did not wield any weapons and performed normal attacks (as well as his Mars-amplified Stun Muscle move) with his bare hands.

Trivia[edit]

  • He is, of course, Saturos's replacement for The Lost Age.
  • Within Dark Dawn, depictions of Agatio and Karst on cardboard appear as obstacles within areas of the Psynergy Training Grounds, which act as an in-universe summary of the first two Golden Sun games.
  • The game's storyline refers to Agatio as being weaker than Saturos, although gameplay-wise, Agatio's level and stats are higher. This contradiction is primarily to suit the needs of the game for increasingly harder challenges to be presented.
