Walrein is a deadly walrus-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is the third and final form in Spheal's evolutionary line.

Information[edit]

Walrein evolves from Sealeo at Level 44. It has a pair of tusks that have massively developed so that it can shatter ice with ease. Walrein is also shielded by thick blubber which insulates its body from subzero temperatures and also makes enemy attacks bounce off harmlessly (although this is not reflected in gameplay). Walrein often swim through icy seas while using their tusks to cut through ice floes blocking their paths. Walreins's tusk can shatter even a ten ton block of ice with just one blow. Walrein are also very protective, as the leader of a pack of Walrein will battle anything to protect its pack, even if it costs the Walrein its life. Walrein's tusks may snap off in battle.

Appearances[edit]

Mainstream Games[edit]

In most games, Walrein could be obtained only through evolution. In Pokémon: Black and White Versions, they had a rare chance of appearing in rippling water at Undella Bay, but they could only appear during the winter.

Other Games[edit]

Walrein could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Endless Level 21, Forever Level 70, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the second through fifth basement floors of Lower Brine Cave, and a non-playable Walrein also appeared in the game where it looked after the newborn Manaphy once it was found that it needed to live in the sea. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Almia Castle. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Mt. Sorbet and the Ice Temple.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, Walrein was introduced in one episode of the Hoenn series where a young trainer named Rocky used Walrein and Quagsire for a double match against Ash. A trainer named Katie also used a Walrein as her last Pokémon during her battle with Ash at the Ever Grande Conference. and it was able to defeat Ash's Corphish but was beaten by Grovyle. Other Walrein have made more minor appearances.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Walrein was shown as one of Archie's main Pokémon during the Ruby/Sapphire arc, and he released multiple Walrein at one time. He also used a Walrein in his guise as Guile Hideout during the Emerald arc.

Trivia[edit]

  • Its name seems to be a combination of "walrus" with a play on "reign" (due to its dominant nature).
