Watchog is a meerkat-like Pokémon that was introduced in the fifth generation games. It is the evolved form of Patrat.
Information
Watchog evolves from Patrat at Level 20. They are a taller species with longer tails. They seem to be the elevation of the Patrat's need for lookouts. They have keen eyesight which allows them to see in the dark, and they threaten predators by making the patterns on their bodies shine in the dark. A Watchog's tail stands high when it detects an enemy, and it will spit berries stored in its cheek pouches at the offender.
They notably learn several status-changing moves such as Hypnosis and Confuse Ray as well as powerful moves like Super Fang and Hyper Fang, which makes them ideal for whittling away at and frustrating enemies. It is likely because of this that they are often used by criminals such as Team Plasma grunts.
Appearances
Mainstream Games
In Pokémon: Black and White Versions. Watchog could be found at Routes 1 (dark grass), 7, 15 (dark grass) and 18, Dreamyard (dark grass) and P2 Laboratory.
Other Games
In Pokémon Rumble Blast, Watchog will appear at Trailhead Field's meadow only after the game's main storyline is completed. In PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond, Watchog had to be retrieved from the Wish Park and then appeared at the Cove Area's Seasong Beach, where it was befriended after the player survived its attacks in a minigame.
Other Appearances
Other Media
- In the Pokémon anime series, Lenora had a Watchog that appeared in several episodes. She used its ability to detect a Yamask's presence in one episode. During the two-part gym battle episode, this Watchog defeated Ash's Oshawott in his first battle against Lenora, but it was able to defeat Watchog in the second battle. Other Watchog have since appeared belonging to different trainers or in the wild.
Trivia
- Its name seems to be a truncation of "watchdog" or could be a combination of "watch" and "groundhog", both of which refer to Watchog being some type of furry mammal and an ideal watchman.
- It is unknown if its swirling eyes ever close, as they do not appear to close even when the Watchog goes to sleep.
