Venusaur is a large flower-backed Pokémon that was introduced in first generation games. It is the third and final form in Bulbasaur's evolutionary line. It was featured as the mascot for the Japan-only Pokémon: Green Version as well as the internationally released LeafGreen Version.

Information

Venusaur is the ultimate evolution of Bulbasaur, evolving from Ivysaur at Level 32. As Venusaur evolves from Ivysaur, the bulb on its back blooms into a flower. The flower absorbs and stores solar energy as the source of Venusaur's power, particularly for the potent Solar Beam move. So Venusaur are constantly on the move to follow sources of sunlight, with the flower taking on vivid colors with proper amounts of nutrition and sunlight. Consequently it is also more powerful during summertime.

It is often quiet and still while absorbing sunlight. As it absorbs the sunlight, it also releases a pleasant aroma that soothes the emotion of people and will calm Pokémon that are engaged in battle. After being caught in the rain, the Venusaur's flower smells strong enough to attract other wild Pokémon.

In Pokémon Pinball, Venusaur can be once more only be obtained through evolution. Venusaur appears in Hey You, Pikachu!, as the moderator of a contest on the Cobalt Beach to determine if Pikachu can split a watermelon while blindfolded. Venusaur also appears in Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2.

Venusaur can be obtained in Secret Storage 3 or Trozei Battle in Pokémon Trozei!. In Pokémon Ranger, Venusaur can be found within the Lyra Forest. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Venusaur are only found in the fiftieth through fifty-ninth floors of Western Cave but could only be recruited through evolution. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness, Venusaur could be found in the first twenty-nine basement floors of the Mystery Jungle. Venusaur could be found in the Silent Forest in Pokémon Rumble. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Latolato Trail, Dark Temple and Odd Temple.

• Venusaur has made several in-game appearances in the Super Smash Bros. series. In the original Super Smash Bros. and with the stage's return appearance in Super Smash Bros. Ultumate, Venusaur appeared as one of the Pokémon that could appear at random from the Silph Co. elevator in the Saffron City level, attacking with Razor Leaf. In Super Smash Bros. Melee, Venusaur appeared as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned from the Poké Ball item, attacking by shaking the ground with Earthquake. A float of Venusar also appeared in the Poké Floats level.
  • Venusaur has also been represented by a trophy in Melee, a trophy of Mega Venusaur in the 3DS/Wii U game and an Advanced-rank Primary Spirit (which comes with a fire weakness) in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Venusaur's Spirit would possess a giant Ivysaur in a battle above a poisonous floor.

In Other Media

• Venusaur make occasional appearances in the Pokémon anime. One episode featured a Venusaur overseeing a Bulbasaur evolution ceremony. Another episode showed a Venusaur as ruler of the Forbidden Woods. May also had a Bulbasaur which eventually evolved into a Venusaur.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Red's Ivysaur evolved into a Venusaur while executing a triple attack against the fused form of the legendary three birds with Blue and Green's Charizard and Blastoise, being the last of the thre starters to reach its final form. Venusaur remains as one of Red's main Pokémon in later arcs and learns the ultimate Grass-type move, Frenzy Plant, in the FireRed/LeafGreen arc.

Trivia

• Venusaur's name is a combination of "Venus" (likely referring to the Venus fly trap plant and/or Venus as in the Roman goddess of fertility) and "saur" (meaning "lizard", the suffix shared by its evolutionary line).
