Debut Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Sothe is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and a main character in its sequel, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn. He described himself as a simple man, because he did not consider himself capable of winning wars and battling goddesses like Ike; Sothe contented himself with protecting those close to him, particularly Micaiah.

Background[edit]

Sothe lived in the slums of Nevassa, a city in Daein. To make a living there, he began stealing from others as a child. He grew to despise the nobles and their lives of luxury, although he actually like the opportunities Ashnard offered to people who were strong fighters. Things changed one day when he saw a silver haired woman in the back alleys of Nevassa. For days he often found himself staring at her until one day she held out her hand inviting him to approach. Sothe's tiny hand grapsed her's, and they soon became great friends, forming a strong bond that caused them to refer to each other as siblings.

Path of Radiance[edit]

Sothe and the silver haired maiden, Micaiah, then spent some time traveling the continent together. However, Micaiah later abandoned Sothe in Crimea. Sothe was desperate to track her down, but his Micaiah's trail went cold at Port Toha. Soon afterwards, the port was closed down by Daein forces looking for Princess Elincia. In desperation, Sothe (who was still just a child) stowed away on Nasir's ship, which was bound for Begnion and was being used to transport Ike and his band of mercenaries. In a base conversation for "Chapter 12: A Strange New Land", Nasir caught Sothe and chased him around the ship. Sothe soon was caught by Ike and explained himself. Ike then allowed Sothe to travel with his mercenary group.

In Begnion, Sothe searched everywhere he could for Micaiah, but found no sign of her. He decided that worrying about it all the time wasn't doing him any good, so he just assumed that she was doing fine elsewhere. Sothe continued traveling with Ike's group after they became the Crimean Liberation Army and led an attack on Daein. He decided to return to his old home and met with some old friends after Ike finished his campaign there, and he felt bad for the damage done to Daein by the army he was a part of. After the war was over, Sothe returned to Daein in hopes of helping out in rebuilding the land.

Radiant Dawn[edit]

Sothe was reunited with Micaiah after returning to Daein, in the back alleys of Nevassa where they had first met. He found out the reason she left him was because she was one of the Branded, and she did not want him to be hurt by the curse she had to live with. He became angry at her after hearing this. They soon made up with the promise of always telling the truth to each other. However, she did often become annoyed at Sothe's newfound admiration of General Ike. The two than became part pf the Dawn Brigade in order to rebel against Begnion's occupying forces in Daein, who were corrupt and ruthless.

Part 1: Silver-Haired Maiden[edit]

Three years later, the Dawn Brigade wound up on the run after their hide-out was discovered by Begnion. Sothe was first playable in "Chapter 2: The Dispossessed". They soon met with Pelleas, the apparent heir of the late King Ashnard, in "Chapter 5: The Lost Heir", and Micaiah was named the commander of the Daein Liberation Army. He continued to fight in this new army, but Sothe remained suspicious of the whole ordeal and particularly of Izuka. He continued to provide moral support for Micaiah, but he was troubled to find Micaiah was hiding her growing fatigue from him. Eventually the Daein Liberation Army was successful in installing Pelleas on the throne.

Part 3: Intersecting Vows[edit]

Some time afterwards, Pelleas sent the Daein army to aid Begnion troops in attacking retreating soldiers of the Laguz Alliance Army in "Chapter 6: Rivals Collide". Sothe was against the plan from the start, but Micaiah, who was commander of the army, trusted Pelleas's judgement and went out to war against Sothe's protests. Sothe remained at Micaiah's sid regardless so that he could continue to protect her. Then in "Chapter 7: Rivals Collide", they faced off with Sothe's old commander Ike, who was leading the Laguz Alliance army. Micaiah later collapsed from exhaustion in "Chapter 12: The Call", at which point Sothe was intent on ditching the Daein army with Micaiah, unable to endanger her in the war that Daein had no part in. But then Pelleas revealed his true reasons in that he had been tricked into signing a blood pact with Begnion, and if he did not follow their orders they would activate the curse of the blood pact which would slowly kill everyone in Daein.

With this information, Micaiah resumed control of the army, but Sothe was troubled by her increasingly reckless tactics in battle. When Micaiah attempted to kill the apostle Sanaki in order to end the war quickly, Tibarn arrived and convinced her to retreat by threatening Sothe's life. This made Micaiah realize that there were some things, such as Sothe's life, which she was unwilling to give up for Daein. Once again Ike and Micaiah's forces clashed in "Endgame: From Pain, Awakening". However, Ike and Micaiah departed early after Micaiah heard Yune's voice guiding her. It brought them to the altar where Ike and most of the other war's leaders were looking over Lehran's Medallion. Yune was freed by Micaiah's galdr and began using her body as a host, which Sothe was not very happy with.

Part 4: Of Gods and Men[edit]

After Ashera turned most of the world's population into stone, the forces of Ike, Micaiah and Elincia joined up and split into smaller armies in order to find the Tower of Guidance and defeat Ashunera there. Sothe joined Micaiah in the Silver Army. Yune saw Sothe's importance to Micaiah, so she gave him power which promoted him to a Whisper so he could protect Micaiah more efficiently at the end of "Prologue: Chaos Named".

They reached Sienne and made their attack on the Tower of Guidance in "Endgame: Rebirth". At point, they also killed Lekain and destroyed the blood pact. After Ashera was defeated and the petrified people freed, Sothe and Micaiah returned to Daein in order to help rebuild.

Micaiah then became queen of Daein. Sothe became a pillar of strength for her and dedicated herself to helping the poor. If he had an A Support with Micaiah, they were married, making him King of Daein.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

In Path of Radiance, Sothe is capable of having Support conversations with two other characters.

  • Astrid- Astrid asks Sothe about how the weapons triangle works, but he scoffs at her for being ignorant of such common mercenary knowledge, and he guesses that she once was a noble. He wonders why someone like her is in the war but deduces that she's alright as long as she takes down Daein soldiers. In the next conversation, Sothe helps Astrid after she passes out from over-exerting herself and has trouble with the realities of war. He tells her the battlefield is not a place for nobles when they have lavish and free lives back home. But Astrid says she joined the Begnion military because she was not free at her home and tells him about her arranged marriage. Sothe assures her he wasn't trying to pry, but Astrid thanks him. In the final conversation, Sothe realizes that the nobles must be different then he realized and apologizes for thinking of her as just a pampered noble. He then tells her to keep up the good work because she's earned her freedom and should never let her parents take that away.
  • Tormod- In the first conversation, Tormod attempts to become friendly with Sothe by complimenting his maneuvers on the battlefield and mentioning they are around the same age, but Sothe remains cold to him. In the second conversation, Tormod directly suggests they become friends. Sothe refuses, but Tormod says he'll treat him like a friend regardless. In the third conversation, Sothe asks Tormod why he insists on becoming friends. Tormod says it is because Muarim was unhappy that Tormod did not have any beorc friends (if Muarim was killed in battle, Tormod says it is to honor his memory). After hearing this, Sothe decides to befriend him so he does not cause grief for his father figure, saying he has someone who is like a parent to him. Tormod is excited and promises to be best friends forever since they have much in common, but Sothe reminds Tormod that thieves are loners and he doesn't need a partner to make noise and mess up his thefts.

In Radiant Dawn, Sothe has a Bond Support with Micaiah, and the two are automatically at an A Rank Support level.

Trivia[edit]

  • His Japanese name is "Saza", which simply means "small". This may be in reference to Sothe being young in his first appearance.
  • Unused Path of Radiance data indicates that at one point Sothe was intended to have support conversations with Volke, Haar and Janaff.
