Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a sidescrolling platforming adventure that acts as the sequel to Super Mario Land and Mario's last actual adventure on the Game Boy. It features improved graphics from the first game along with many new enemies and a new setting. This game is also known for introducing the character of Wario.

Story

Mario has just returned to Mario Land after defeating Tatanga in Sarasaland (in the first Super Mario Land). He finds that during his absence, his old nemesis Wario has taken over and occupied Mario Land. Mario must collect the six golden coins needed to open the door to his castle so he may defeat Wario.

Gameplay

Like the original, the game featured a classic side-scrolling method of gameplay. The game featured a world map. After the first level was completed, it was possible to play through the remaining worlds in any order. By completing the five worlds containing the five golden coins, it was then possible to access Wario's Castle. Frustratingly, getting a game over would cause the player to lose one of the golden coins (if the player had collected any), forcing the player to replay a level to earn it again.

The game featured four power-ups: the Super Mushroom, the Fire Flower, the Super Star and a new item called the Carrot, which turned Mario into a Bunny form.

Continuity Notes

  • The instruction manual mentions that this game takes place on Mario's return to Mario Land following the events of Super Mario Land, directly connecting the two games. Super Mario Land's final boss, Tatanga, also appears as the boss of the Space Zone.

Legacy

It is known as being the last official side-scrolling Mario game to be made for over a decade, until the release of New Super Mario Bros. in 2006. It also introduced Wario into the series.

Sequels

It was followed by Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3. This was actually a spin-off game starring Wario, and from there the Super Mario Land subseries transitioned into being the Wario Land series.
