Caellach is a mercenary who serves as one of the antagonists of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and becomes one of Grado's head generals.

Background[edit]

Caellach was a powerful and ambitious mercenary who used to fight alongside Joshua in the desert of Jehanna, but he was eager to leave that place behind. He dreamed of becoming a king, and it seems that this ambition is what caused him to part with Joshua and the other mecernaries about two years prior to the War of the Stones. Caellach's amoral nature eventually led him to be recruited by Vigarde (who was being controlled by Lyon) as one of Grado's new generals at the end of "Chapter 3: The Bandits of Borgo". He was given the new nickname of Tiger Eye and shamelessly began sizing up the appearance of his fellow general Selena. Caellach and Selena were deployed to Frelia. They were unable to conquer Frelia, but they achieved Grado's true objective by breaking into the Tower of Valni, where Grado's Sacred Stone was held. Caellach destroyed it himself. Selena was enraged by his killing of soldiers in cold blood, but Caellach did not care to take his orders seriously.

Caellach was later deployed to destroy Jehanna's Sacred Stone, and he was annoyed that he had to return there. He made one appearance in Ephraim's path in "Chapter 12: Landing at Taizel", where he was leading the Grado forces at Taizel and criticizing their previous failures regarding Ephraim's army. He was interrupted by Riev, who questioned him as to why he was not in Jehanna. Caellach likened Jehanna to "an overripe fruit" that was being consumed from the inside, which he could exploit whenever he chose to. Riev pointed out to Caellach that his plan was falling apart as Eirika's forces were already progressing to Jehanna and they were both wanted back at the capital. Caellach suspected that this was Valter's doing and had to leave his subordinates behind as he and Riev both departed from the area. He then appeared in several chapters of Eirika's path. In "Chapter 13: Hamill Canyon", he left his old mercenary friend Aias in charge at Hamill Canyon and left, claiming he was going to engage the approaching Rausten knights. This was a lie, as the Rausten knights arrived during Aias's battle with Eirika's forces. If Aias survived, he would retreat and meet with Caellach. Caellach would then kill him, because he did not want anyone or anything from his past to chain him down during his journey to become a king.

He then manipulated Carlyle in order to gain control of Jehanna Palace in "Chapter 14: Queen of White Dunes" and took Queen Ismaire hostage in order to find Jehanna's Sacred Stone. He claimed that he was kind to women, unlike his fellow general Valter, whom he described as a "freak". He then blackmailed Carlyle into fighting Eirika's forces for him while he looked for the Stone. Ismaire refused to hand the Sacred Stone over to him, so Caellach fatally wounded her and took the Stone off her person. He was accompanied by Lyon, who acted squeamish and reluctant about the whole ordeal. Caellach was embarrassed by his behavior and urged him to toughen up; these interactions suggest he did not know the truth about Lyon's situation, although the case could be different in the Ephraim version of events where Lyon was more open about his control of Grado.

He and Valter then led Grado reinforcements which ambushed Eirika's forces by Jehanna in "Chapter 15: Scorched Sand" on both Eirika and Ephraim's paths. Caellach had a unique battle conversation with Joshua which was different in each path, as only in Eirika's path did Joshua know that Caellach had killed his mother. Regardless of the person fighting him, Caellach lost and was killed in the ensuing battle.
