Minor Characters[edit]
This list reflects the changes made by the remake, while elements from the original Super NES version and its English translation are still noted. Underneath a character's stats are their Thought Peek quotes, which reveal their inner thoughts. When two quotes are listed side by side, the first is from the Super NES localization while the second is from the Switch localization.
A[edit]
- Bad/Mad Adder
- (Bad Adder) HP: 2500, Attack: 220, Defense: 120, Magic Attack: 5, Magic Defense: 10
- "What a royal pain!"
- (Mad Adder) HP: 1500, Attack: 70, Defense: 90, Magic Attack: 90, Magic Defense: 180
- "I'm alive and kicking." / "I lead a carefree life. Maybe too carefree?"
- A giant snake associated with Domino and Cloaker. After one of the two was beaten, the other would summon the Adder and fused with it. It was known as the Bad Adder when summoned by Cloaker and the Mad Adder when summoned by Domino, with the Bad Adder being the more powerful of the two. Despite the differing stats, the Monster List entry in the remake asserts that the Mad and Bad Adder are the same snake, and given that the monster's name is dependent on who merges with it, it goes on to wonder what the monster's true name is. In the original Super NES localization, the name "Earthlink" was used instead for the Bad Adder.
B[edit]
- Beezo
- Beezo was a gardener in service of Valentina. He was first found in Bean Valley, where he was raising several Piranha Plants. He eventually brought the Megasmilax to life and, after it was beaten, he fled to Nimbus Land to warn Valentina. He accidentally leaves behind a note with a seed attached. Mario was able to catch up to Beezo within Nimbus Palace, where he was stuck behind a locked door in Birdo's chamber. He only arrived to warn Valentina moments before the arrival of Mario and his friends. After Valentina's defeat, Beezo could be found at the end of an invisible platform in Nimbus Land, where he bribes Mario with some fertilizer. The seed and fertilizer he left behind turned out to be legendary items that could be used to grow a Bean Stalk in Rose Town, from which the Lazy Shell items could be reached.
- Birdo
- HP: 777, Attack: 160, Defense: 130, Magic Attack: 6, Magic Defense: 100
- "I just love life!" / "If someone has to finish me off, I'm glad it'll be you. ♡"
- Birdo was found in Nimbus Palace, where she was contained within a giant egg known as Shelly (with the remake saying she put herself in the egg). She offered to give Mario and his friends the Castle Key 2 if they agree to play with her, which happened in the form of the battle. In the first phase of the battle, Mario's group simply had to attack the egg until it cracked enough to free Birdo. Birdo would then fight back by spitting eggs, including exploding eggs known as Eggbert. After being defeated, she surrendered the Castle Key 2 and asked Mario not to forget her.
- Boomer
- HP: 2000, Attack: 200, Defense: 140, Magic Attack: 35, Magic Defense: 26
- "It's all over now..." / "The time for words is past."
- Boomer was a deadly, cannon-like machine built by Smithy in his factory. Boomer is hotheaded but honorable, in the manner of a samurai. Despite being modeled after cannon, he wielded a katana in battle, furthering the samurai comparison. Boomer changed his color between red and blue in battle, and his weaknesses shifted at the same time. He was vulnerable against special attacks when his armor was red and normal attacks when his armor was blue. He battled Mario's group on the chandeliers within Bowser's Keep (similar to Bowser in the beginning of the game), and he was the last obstacle prior to facing Exor. After being defeated, Boomer accepted the defeat with honor and rejected Mario's sympathy, instead opting to make his Shyndelier drop him to his doom.
- Boshi
- Boshi was a blue punk-fashioned Yoshi with a sweet tooth for Yoshi Cookies. He took over the Mushroom Derby racetrack on Yo'ster Isle and forced only one Yoshi to race him at a time with Yoshi Cookies as wagering stakes. Boshi was initially undefeated, which caused him to maintain his control over the races, until Mario helped Yoshi to beat him. With his defeat, Boshi allowed all Yoshis to join in on the races. He was last seen walking away with Croco in the ending.
- His Japanese name is Wasshi, seemingly following the precedent of Wario's name. This makes him the closest to a Wario-esque counterpart that Wario has had.
C[edit]
- King Calamari
- HP: 800, Attack: 100, Defense: 80, Magic Attack: 30, Magic Defense: 40
- "The ship's MINE! SCRAM!"
- A giant Blooper-like squid that sunk that Sunken Ship, only to end up trapped within its prison cellar. Mario and his group had to fight him about halfway through their exploration of the Sunken Ship, after unlocking the treasure cellar with the special password "Pearls". During the battle, Mario's group first had to fight off several waves of tentacles before facing King Calamari himself, with his left and right tentacles. His weak point was Fire attacks. After being destroyed, the helmet he was wearing remained behind.
- Chancellor
- The Chancellor was a Toad who resided in the Mushroom Kingdom palace seen in the game. He was distinguished by a green-spotted cap and a black mustache, and he appeared to be larger than other Toads. His exact role in the affairs of the Mushroom Kingdom are uncertain, but he appears to have some power over Princess Peach and is accompanied by a council of Toad advisers. Worried excessively about the princess's safety, the Chancellor deployed Mario to find Princess Peach and gave him a map early in the game. He was also trapped in the throne room during Claymorton's occupation of the palace, until Mario drove the enemy out. After Peach was rescued, the Chancellor voiced his disapproval of her wanting to join Mario on his adventure, which caused her to sneak out while having her chambermaid pose as her. He was last seen riding Yoshi during the ending parade.
- In the Japanese version, his rank is Toad Cabinet Minister. In Paper Mario, a Toad Minister appears in a similar capacity at Peach's castle. Like the Chancellor, he has green spots on his head and a mustache, although the Minister appears to be visibly older, as his mustache is white and bushy. It is unclear if the two characters are intended to be the same.
- Chef Torte
- HP: 100, Attack: 60, Defense: 50, Magic Attack: 8, Magic Defense: 27
- "Cake! Vatch zee CAKE."
- Chef Torte was a master chef with a thick accent who worked in the Marrymore Chapel's kitchen with his loyal apprentice, cooking cakes for the weddings. Chef Torte was known to be quick to anger. As established in the remake, 'Torte' is actually the name of the species for both the Chef and his Apprentice. When Booster and Princess Peach's wedding was called off due to Mario's intervention, Torte replied by attacking Mario and his group, not wanting his wedding cake to go to waste. But when the Bundt turned out to be alive, Torte and his apprentice fled the battle. Afterwards, they remained working in the Marrymore Chapel's kitchen on further cakes. During the remake (as part of a quest unlocked post-game but set during the main storyline), Chef Torte and his Apprentice later made another Bundt cake while sleep-deprived. During the rematch, the Tortes tried lighting Bundt's candles in hopes that would make it normal, without realizing that they were empowering its greatest move. The two could easily be put to sleep during the battle, and after Bundt was defeated again, they gave Mario's group an Enduring Brooch. After completing that quest, the two of them would appear attending Booster and Valentina's marriage in the ending, as well as appearing with the other characters on stage during the curtain call.
- He has a Star Hill wish to be a world (or "vald") class baker. In the remake, he also makes a wish during the rematch quest to stop the cake again, and after the rematch, it changes into a wish that he could just make a normal cake.
- Cinder Toad
- Cinder Toad was an eccentric Toad who left the Mushroom Kingdom to live in the Barrel Volcano. He had a distinctive flame pattern on his cap, while wearing sunglasses and sporting facial hair. At the volcano, he ran makeshift versions of an item shop and an armory (known as Cinder Mart) and an inn, with his bed consisting of a bunch of wooden crates. As ramshackle as his shop may be, his services still acted as an asset so far into the Barrel Volcano and so close to its boss battles. He was also shown to have a collection of models referencing other Nintendo series: an Arwing from Star Fox and several F-Zero machines. The original Super NES release called him by his Japanese name of Hinopio, a name that was formed by combining "Hino" (the Japanese word for fire) and "Kinopio" (Toad's Japanese name).
- Clerk
- HP: 500, Attack:160, Defense: 100, Magic Attack: 47, Magic Defense: 0
- "10 years I've been here!"
- An armored axe-wielding figure (his axe having eyes similar to the Blade), the Clerk was one of Smithy's employees in the factory who has apparently worked there for ten years. He oversaw the production of Smithy's new army and was often accompanied by a pair of Mad Mallet bodyguards. The Clerk faced the last challenge of his career one day when he met with Mario and Mallow as they enter the factory. The Clerk did not recognize either of them, but when Mallow threatened him to close down the factory, the Clerk retaliated by attacking them. The Clerk was destroyed in the ensuing battle.
- Cloaker
- HP: 1200, Attack: 170/180, Defense: 130, Magic Attack: 12, Magic Defense: 60
- "I love cold hard steel!" / "Can you follow the arc of my proud blade?"
- (Fused) "I can't think straight!" / "Gaaah! I'm too mad to think anymore!"
- Domino and Cloaker were a pair of jester-like enemies who battle Mario's group outside Smithy's Factory. Cloaker had a pot-shaped body, but his Monster List entry clarified that as Smithy was not a potter, Cloaker was actually made out of iron, and his mustache was made from ultra-thin iron boards that were painted white. Cloaker was notable for having high physical and low magical stats. If Domino was defeated first, Cloaker will then board the Bad Adder in battle, insistent that the two of them were fused into one being. Cloaker's attack was raised while riding the Bad Adder. Ultimately, he was destroyed in battle.
- Comeon
- HP: 500, Attack: 170, Defense: 100, Magic Attack: 80, Magic Defense: 20
- "I love my job!?" / "You sure are a greedy one. ♡"
- The fourth and most powerful of the treasure chest enemies. Comeon was the last enemy encountered behind one of the six doors of Bowser's Keep. He will summon a Bahamutt to aid him in battle. Like the previous chest enemies, he was only weak against Jump attacks and has Special Defenses against all other special attacks. A friendly Comeon also appeared at Monstro Town, where he told Mario how many hidden treasure blocks he still had to find and congratulated him whenever he found them all. He was originally named Chester in the English Super NES version.
- Count Down
- HP: 2400, Attack: 0, Defense: 80, Magic Attack: 120, Magic Defense: 80
- "We're into overtime!" / "I demand strict punctuality! No excuses!"
- (Ring-A-Ding) HP: 1200, Attack: 180, Defense: 120, Magic Attack: 20, Magic Defense: 50
- "Wake up sleepy heads!" / "Wake up, everyone. It's morning."
- This massive clock served as a security sentinel in Smithy's Factory and was the first boss encountered within the Weapon World. Count Down unleashed a wide variety of techniques depending on the time indicated by its face. The two bells on his head, the Ring-a-Dings (known as Ding-a-Lings in the Super NES localization), also had powers of their own. Count Down had Special Defenses against Fear, Poison, Sleep and Silence, but was weak against Jump and Thunder attacks. Ultimately it was destroyed in battle with Mario and his party.
- Culex
- HP: 4096, Attack: 250, Defense: 100, Magic Attack: 100, Magic Defense: 80
- "A little off, eh?" / "I feel... a bit out of place."
- (Culex 3D) HP: 9999
- You shall bear witness to the power of post-game content!
- An optional boss who is the game's most powerful enemy and is modeled after a generic Final Fantasy boss. Culex's lair can only be accessed by unlocking a door in Monstro Town using the Shiny Stone. He hailed from another dimension where he was known as the Dark Knight of Vanda, in service of the Black Mage. When Mario met Culex, he was preparing to return to his own dimension due to finding Mario's dimension uninhabitable for him, but agreed to taken on the dimension's strongest warrior (i.e. Mario) beforehand. In battle, Culex was accompanied by four elemental crystals. After being defeated, Culex rewarded Mario with a Quartz Charm and acknowledged Mario as a comrade-in-arms before returning to his home dimension. In the Switch remake, it was explained that as a result of his evil power, he could only take on a two-dimensional form (represented as a 16-bit sprite in contrast to the game's 3-D models). He was puzzled by the three-dimensional space exhibited by this world and wanted to learn how to harness its power. As a special post-game challenge (chronologically set before the final battle), Mario could use an Extra-Shiny Stone to return to Culex's space, where he had mastered the power of three-dimensional space and become the far more powerful Culex 3D. This version of Culex could be rebattled multiple times, with the game keeping track of how many turns the player took to defeat him. After beating him once, Culex would show up during the game's ending, briefly appearing in his 2-D form at the gathering in Monstermama's home.
- His backstory was different in the Japanese version, where he was described as a timeless being of pure evil. Him being a 2-D being puzzled by three-dimensional space was also part of the original Japanese script in the Super NES version. Some elements of this are reflected in the English version of the Switch remake, especially the 2-D aspect, but some references to Culex being an evil being are also present combined with his original backstory as the Dark Knight of Vanda from the English Super NES game.
D[edit]
- Director
- HP: 1000, Attack: 190, Defense: 120, Magic Attack: 57, Magic Defense: 80
- "I just lost EVERYTHING." / "The union, my son's exams, career changes... I've seen a lot during my time."
- Another of the armored axe-wielding officials in Smithy's Factory, the Director was similar to the rest of the Factory Staff and was accompanied by Poundettes in battle. Mario and Princess Peach confronted him as they made their way through Smithy's Factory. Peach pleaded with him to stop creating all these harmful machines, but the Director refused and engages the group in battle. The Director's attempt to melt Mario and his group down so that production may continue failed, and he was destroyed. His Thought Peek and Monster List entry mention the mundane aspects of his job, as he was dealing with a labor union while his son was going through exams, and he apparently shifted into the director role only recently.
- Dodo
- HP: 1000/800, Attack: 140, Defense: 100, Magic Attack: 9, Magic Defnese: 60
- "I'm STARVED!" / "I'm hungry..."
- "I'm starved...later!" / "I'm still hungry... I should head home already..."
- Dodo was Valentina's large and cowardly servant. In his Monster List entries in the Switch remakes, it was revealed that he imprinted on Valentina as a mother when he was born, but he became resentful of her when he realized that she was not his real mother while still feeling indebted to her for raising him. Dodo served her obediently, as he was too scared to stand up to her, and he took out his anger on her statues instead. Valentina had Dodo pose as the long-missing Prince Mallow and Valentina's fiancee as a part of Valentina's plot to usurp the throne as queen of Nimbus Land. There were two optional chances to battle Dodo before the final battle with Valentina. First, there was a minigame in which Dodo was pecking statues, and Mario (who was posing as a statue to infiltrate the palace) had to dodge Dodo's pecks to maintain his cover without being spotted jumping. Dodo would be battled if Mario failed the minigame, or Mario could gain the Feather item by successfully duping Dodo and avoiding the battle. The second time was when Valentina and Dodo tried fleeing from Mario's group. Dodo could be seen running through a hallway and would be battled if Mario ran into him. However, a Super Star was found nearby, and that could be used to immediately knock Dodo out without battling him. During the final battle of Nimbus Land, Dodo fought alongside Valentina. Early in the match, Dodo would abduct one of Mario's partners (whoever is in the center) for a one-on-one battle until he was injured enough, at which point both characters would rejoin the main battle with Valentina. After a crushing defeat, Dodo and Valentina fled Nimbus Land, with Dodo carrying Valentina in the air while flying. Dodo later served as the officiant conducting Valentina's marriage to Booster and carried Valentina around in a palanquin in the ending parade.
- Domino
- HP: 900, Attack: 65, Defense: 140/80, Magic Attack: 120, Magic Defense: 150
- "MAGIC! DEAL with it!" / "I'll cast a spell on you! It's magic!"
- (Fused) "Sho...sho...shocked!" / "There's no feeling like blowing away your enemies. ♡"
- One of the two jester-like enemies who guarded the gates to Smithy's Factory alongside Cloaker. In contrast to his partner, Domino relied mostly on magical attacks and had low physical stats, although he did sport high Defense. If Cloaker was defeated first in the battle with Mario, Domino will board the Mad Adder, although doing so would cause his defense to drop. Domino would consider himself and the Mad Adder to be one being while riding it, but they still were defeated. His Monster List entry pokes fun at how a magic boss does not make sense with the industrial theme of the Smithy Gang.
- Dyna and Mite
- The children of Ma and Pa Mole living in Moleville. Dyna was a mischievous young girl, and Mite was her baby brother who was usually seen strapped to Dyna's back. In the game's story, they were trapped in the Mole Mines following a cave-in. Mario and the others soon arrived to rescue them, and they successfully escaped the mines via mine cart. Dyna had fun, although Mite was a bit shaken up by the experience. In the ending credits, they were seen hiding a top a King Bomb being carried by moles in the parade.
E[edit]
- Earth Crystal
- HP: 32000, Attack: 0, Defense: 70, Magic Attack: 80, Magic Defense: 33
- "I hate being awakened!" / "Of course I'd get woken up in the middle of a nice nap."
- (Earth Crystal 3D) HP: 42000
- "Personally, I'd never felt the need to become three-dimensional."
- One of the four crystals that joined Culex in battle, based on the same crystals from the Final Fantasy series. It was said to slumber within the earth and to have caused extra-bad earthquakes, setting off a number of amplified tremors at once when it awakened. It has the highest HP of the crystals but its other stats are relatively inferior. As its name suggests, it specializes in earth-based magic. It has special defenses against Jump attacks but is weak against Thunder attacks.
F[edit]
- Factory Chief
- HP: 1000, Attack: 200, Defense: 120, Magic Attack: 70, Magic Defense: 90
- "Who DARES to fight ME?!" / "This month's goal is 1,000 Shymore units!"
- The top employee of Smithy's staff and the last enemy battled prior to gaining access to Smithy's lair. With the appearance and abilities of the Ninja enemy, which differentiated him from the other heavily-armored factory staff members, he was a brilliant inventor who oversaw the factory's operations and was focused on pushing out large amounts of units. In battle with Mario's group, the Factory Chief was accompanied by his ultimate invention, the Gunyolk, but the two of them were defeated.
- Fire Crystal
- HP: 2500, Attack: 0, Defense: 100, Magic Attack: 130, Magic Defense: 60
- "I gotta vacuum tonight!" / "I can't keep up with Master Culex anymore."
- (Fire Crystal 3D) HP: 35000
- "Master Culex certainly has grown impressive."
- One of the four crystals that joined Culex in battle, based on the elemental crystals from the Final Fantasy series. It had the highest Magic Attack of the crystals. As its name suggested, it specialized in fire-based magic. Thus it had special defenses against fire attacks while being weak against Ice attacks. In the remake, its Monster List entries revealed that the Fire Crystal was dedicated to the fire of justice, and it was disappointed that Culex was misusing its power for evil.
- Sergeant Flutter
- Flutter was the Paratroopa drill sergeant commanding a group of Sky Troopas in the service of Monstermama. Flutter came flying whenever Monstermama calls for him and always timed himself. In the game, Monstermama had Flutter and his Sky Troopas help Mario to reach Bean Valley from Land's End. To do so, they arranged themselves along an unscaleable cliff, so that Mario could leap from one to the other in order to reach the top and find Bean Valley. Flutter also kept record of Mario's times in true military style and would reward Mario with a Troopa Medal and Flower Coins for a good time.
- Frog Sage
- The Frog Sage (named Frogfucius in the original localization, in reference to the Chinese philosopher Confucius) is the wise and ancient frog guru of Tadpole Pond with a taste for the theatrics (such as using a Lakitu with a fishing line to make it look like he can fly) and a love of cricket-based food. His wisdom is apparently due in part to the news that flows along the waterways of the world. The Frog Sage adopted the baby Nimbusian Mallow as his grandson, raising him to believe he was a frog since he had no idea of Mallow's true origins. He had Mallow run errands for him and encouraged him to control his emotions because of the effects his power had on the weather. It wasn't until Mallow met Mario that Frog Sage revealed the truth and sent Mallow away to search for his real parents. Afterwards, Frog Sage could provide advice about where to go next and needed to be visited to suggest going to Star Hill for the fourth Star Piece. He also rewarded them when they brought Cricket Pie or Jam. For the former, he gave them a Froggie Stick that he claimed to have used when he was Mallow's age. As part of the post-game quest (which was set before the game's ending), the Frog Sage would hint at the different opponents that could be rematched and was revealed to have lost his Sage Stick in Belome Temple long ago, which ended up in Mallow's possession. After all the rematches were complete, Frog Sage acknowledged Mario as unstoppable and started calling him Mario Sage. In the game's ending, Frog Sage showed up during Toadofsky's performance at Tadpole Pond and also dangled from the Lakitu Bus by Lakitu's fishing line while watching tadpoles in the ending parade.
- He made a wish on Star Hill for Cricket Jam. After giving him Cricket Jam, the wish would change into one wishing for everyone's happiness.
G[edit]
- Garro
- Garro was a Nimbusian scultor who was friends with King Nimbus and designed royal sculptures for the palace. After Valentina took over, he was only allowed to make sculptures of her. Garro discovered the real Prince Mallow and then smuggled his partner Mario into the palace by making him look like a golden statue. He told the guards the statue was of Valentina's cousin "Marietta" while telling Valentina herself that it was a special piece called "In Search of Lost Brother" (or "A Plumber's Lament" in the Super NES version). After Mario and his friends overthrew Valentina, Garro made golden sculptures of Mario and his comrades that were displayed in Nimbus Palace. He was last seen attending Mallow's coronation in the ending.
- Gaz
- A young Toad boy who lived in the Rose Town inn, which was run by his mother. He had a collection of action figures that he often played with, including toys of Mario, Princess Peach, Bowser and Geno. When the real Mario arrived at the inn, Gaz convinces Mario to play with him, but he accidentally knocked him out with Geno's Finger Shot. That night, the Geno doll was possessed by a Star Spirit and ran off. Geno later returned with Mario to tell Gaz of his mission, and Gaz gave him his Finger Shot weapon to keep him safe. After the Star Spirit left Geno, the doll was returned to Gaz. In the ending, he and his mother were seen playing together with his toys, with Gaz using Geno again, before Gaz went to look out the window.
- Goomhilde
- Goomhilde was the head of Bowser's Goomba forces, who he described as "the grande dame of the groundling Goombas". She initially followed Bowser after they were all thrown from Bowser's Keep, but she abandoned him at one point due to being too afraid to fight Smithy. Instead, she settled down at Monstro Town and ran the local item shop with her triplets. Once Bowser saw her condition, he forgave her and assured her that he would take his castle back without her. While she always had a distinct name in the Japanese version, the English Super NES localization did not give her a name, and so it was unclear in that version that the Goomba running the Monstro Town shop had been the head Goomba of Bowser's forces seen earlier in the game.
- Grandma
- A Toad residing in the Mushroom Kingdom palace who acts as a chambermaid for Princess Peach, who refers to her as 'Grandma' (or Baaya in Japanese, which is a term of endearment for an elderly maid). She took care of Peach's room while she was away and chastised Mario for jumping on the bed as well as for discovering one of the princess's private personal items (known only as '???'). During Claymorton's occupation of the Mushroom Kingdom, she remained in Peach's room, which became a safe room for Toads fleeing Claymorton's men, and she would restore Mario and Mallow's health with her magic. After Peach was rescued and decided to join Mario on his adventure, Grandma disguised herself as Peach in order to placate the Chancellor's worries.
- Grate Guy
- HP: 900, Attack: 60, Defense: 40, Magic Attack: 25, Magic Defense: 40
- "Peace is just a dream." / "Can there be no new era without misfortune?"
- Grate Guy was the younger of the Clown Bros and rode around on a giant ball. His Monster List entry mentioned that he picked up ball-balancing as a hobby, and ended up being unable to stop himself from balancing on other things. It also said that he had the flaw of sweating while stressed. Though he was friends with Booster and hung around the tower often like his brother, Grate Guy also owned his own exclusive casino in the Land's End area known as Grate Guy's Casion. Both Clown Bros were deployed to stop Mario at the balcony on the top floor of Booster Tower while Booster escaped to Marrymore with Peach. In battle, Grate Guy had special defenses against Fire and Sleep attacks, but he was weak against Thunder attacks. After being defeated, Grate Guy returned to his casino and still welcomed Mario if he came with a Bright Card. At the Casino, Grate Guy would challenge Mario play a game of "Look the Other Way" for a variety of increasingly valuable prizes, with the ultimate prize being the Star Egg if Mario managed to win one hundred times.
H[edit]
- Hammer Bros.
- HP: 54, Attack: 6, Defense: 13, Magic Attack: 6, Magic Defense: 8
- "I love my hammer!"
- The first pair of bosses in the game, the Hammer Bros. blocked the entrance to the Mushroom Kingdom town from Mushroom Way, where they held Toad hostage. Only one Hammer Brother appeared in the overworld, while the second jumped in as the battle started, which their Monster List entry poked fun at. After being defeated, they left behind the Hammer, the first weapon for Mario to equip.
- Huhwhat
- HP: 300, Attack: 30, Defense: 20, Special Attack: 20, Magic Defense: 20
- "I'm trying to sleep, OK?" / "*grumble* Way to bother a person while they're sleeping."
- An enemy disguised as a treasure chest, found in the Kero Sewers. Huhwhat was the first of the treasure chest enemies to be battled in the game and left behind a Trueform Pin when defeated. He had special defenses against basically every time of attack save for Jumping attacks, which are his weak point. The original Super NES localization called him Pandorite in reference to Pandora's Box, a box from Greek mythology that when opened released all the world's evils.
J[edit]
- Jagger
- HP: 600, Attack: 120, Defense: 80, Magic Attack: 0, Magic Defense: 50
- "Oh! I'm so excited!"
- Jagger was the head of the Terrapins under Bowser's command. He initially followed Bowser after being scattered from the castle, but he left Bowser's side at one point and ended up training under the martial arts master Jinx in Monstro Town in hopes of becoming strong enough to defeat Smithy. He would challenge Bowser and his companions to a sparring match if they meet. He had special defenses against jumping, fire and poison attacks with no weak points. After Jagger was defeated, Bowser helped Jagger to feel better by promising to take of Smithy himself. Jinx will then reveal himself and challenge Mario's group. If Jinx was beaten three times, Jagger would follow him in learning the Mario style of jumping. Jagger also played a role in the post-game sidequest in which Jinx was training with Jagger to try to master Triple Moves, even though Jagger noted the flaw that the two of them were a Double at most. After completing that quest, Jagger and Jinx would appear at the gathering in Monstermama's home in the ending.
- Jinx
- HP: 600/800/1000, Attack: 140/160/180, Defense:100/120/140, Magic Attack: 0, Magic Defense: 80/90/100
- "You're just a beginner!" / "You don't have the experience to beat me!"
- "Sympathy!? Not from me!" / "Sympathy!? Not from me!"
- "Ooh! I'm gonna hurt ya!" / "I've committed your every move to memory!"
- (Mario-Style Jinx) HP: 4000
- "Sensei! Please instruct me!"
- The head of the dojo in Monstro City who has inherited a generations-old fighting style. Jinx was a tiny pale humanoid being wearing a red cape and sporting a spike of green hair. He was small enough to fit into a flower pot and yet was also incredibly strong, even bearing several one-hit KO moves. In battle, he lacked any weakness and had special defenses against all special attacks save for jumping ones. He taught Jagger and first appeared after Mario's group defeated Jagger in a battle. After revealing himself from a flower pot, Jinx challenged Mario to test his strength. There were a series of three battles, with Jinx showing more of his strength in each one until he unleashed his full power in the third and final fight. After being defeated the third time, Jinx admitted Mario's superiority and gave him the Jinx Belt. He also renamed the dojo after Mario and began training with Jagger in the Mario style of jumping. In the Switch remake, he was featured as part of the post-game sidequest (which was set before the game's final battle), in which he had made a wish for Mario to show Jinx his moves. Jinx wished to learn how to perform Triple Move, and so he challenged Mario to a duel so that he could display them. However, Jinx also reset the gauge from zero, so Mario's group had to survive long enough to completely fill the gauge for a Triple Move while Jinx unleashed a flurry of one-hit KO moves (and instantly KOed any character who missed an action command). After being shown the Triple Move, Jinx ended the match and thanked Mario by giving him a Teamwork Band that had been passed down within the dojo for generations. He proceeded to continue attempting to train in Triple Moves with Jagger, despite Jagger pointing out that with only two of them, they could only manage a Double at best. The Monster List entry for Jinx also noted that Jinx only realized after the match that he should have had Jagger fight alongside him for further teamwork training. After the battle, Jinx's wish changed into a wish for another pupil, likely for the sake of truly carrying out a Triple Move. Jinx would then start appearing in the ending, with him and Jagger attending a gathering at Monstermama's house as well as being part of the curtain call at the end.
- Wizakoopa can also summon a weaker clone of Jinx during his boss battle.
- He seemed to inspire the character of The Master in Paper Mario. An unused sprite of Jinx was also found within the E3 demo for Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, indicating that he was intended to appear within the game at one point. The final game ended up having a different Super Mario RPG cameo in the form of Geno.
K[edit]
- Knife Guy
- HP: 700, Attack: 70, Defense: 55, Magic Attack: 20, Magic Defense: 10
- "Happiness is hip!" / "Can there be no happiness without sacrifice?"
- Knife Guy was the elder of the two Clown Bros who specialized in juggling. They seemed to be friends with Booster, as they were often seen hanging around his tower. He and Grate Guy were sent to stop Mario from pursuing Booster to Marrymore and battled him on Booster's balcony. Knife Guy used his juggling knives against the plumber in battle. He had Special Defenses against Thunder and Sleep attacks, but he was weak against Fire attacks. After being defeated, Knife Guy remained in Booster's Tower and played a minigame with Mario in which he juggled balls at high speeds and asked Mario to guess which hand contained the yellow hand. The prizes varied from worthless items to the special Bright Card which was needed to access Grate Guy's Casino.
L[edit]
- Luigi
- Mario's brother only made a handful of cameo appearances in the game. First he appeared as the host of the game's instruction manual. Later at Star Hill, one of the wishes was from Luigi, which was a simple wish to be able to support his brother Mario (or to be a great plumber like him in the Super NES localization). In the Japanese version and Switch's English localization of the game, when Garro passed Mario off as a statue to Valentina, he referred to the statue's title as "In Search of Lost Brother" in possible acknowledgement of Luigi's absence. Finally, Luigi was seen leading the parade in the game's ending.
M[edit]
- Ma'Mole
- The mother of Dyna and Mite, residing in Moleville. Ma'Mole was concerned when her children go missing in the mines, but she was ultimately relieved when Mario returned them to her.
- Manager
- HP: 800, Attack: 170, Defense: 110, Magic Attack: 60, Magic Defense: 70
- "25 years of working, sigh." / "Twenty-five years of employment. *sigh*"
- Another armored, axe-wielding employee of Smithy's Factory who has been working there for twenty-five years and seemed to be tired of his job. His Monster List entry implied that he had just recently climbed the ladder to the manager position and that he was aiming higher to boost his efficiency from 30% to 45%. He oversaw the Pounders as they painted machines like the Drill Bits. During Mario's raid on the factory, the Manager was the second to confront Mario. The Manager claims he would be able to do anything he wanted to when Smithy ruled the world. Bowser protested that the world was his, but the Manager ignored him and his haiku by talking to Mario instead. The Manager attacked Mario with a group of Pounders, only to be destroyed.
- Megasmilax
- HP: 1000, Attack: 140, Defense: 80, Magic Attack: 70, Magic Defense: 80
- "I was a water baby!" / "I got watered and grew quickly. I'll wilt quickly too. That's the life of a flower."
- Megasmilax was a piranha plant grown by Beezo in Bean Valley to battle Mario and his group, and it was implied that Beezo specifically grew him to block the entrance to Nimbus Land. This piranha was larger then the others and also had potent magic spells that can turn enemies into mushrooms. Smaller Smilaxes also sprouted from his body to help him in battle. Megasmilax was vulnerable against Ice attacks. Ultimately, the plant was destroyed in battle, causing Beezo to flee and allowing Mario's group access to an area containing a beanstalk leading to Nimbus Land.
- Monstermama
- Monstermama was an elderly Toad acting as the landlady of Monstro Town and was very friendly to visitors. When Mario came looking for a Star Piece, Monstermama initially misunderstood what he was looking for and sent him to see the singing starfish upstairs. After the confusion was cleared, Monstermama remembered hearing about a Star Piece located way up high. Monstermama called for Sergeant Flutter and his Sky Troopa squad to help them reach Bean Valley, where the hidden passage to the sky was located.
- Three Musty Fears
- A trio of ghosts (a Boo, a Dry Bones and a Glum Reaper) who haunted the inn at Monstro Town. If Mario slept in their inn, they will speak to him in his sleep and challenge him to find three flags that they have each hidden in one of the game's areas. When Mario spends another night there after finding all three of the flags, they will visit him again and award him with the Ghost Medal. They could also appear at a gathering in Monstermama's home in the ending.
N[edit]
- King and Queen Nimbus***
- The monarchs who rule over Nimbus Land and the parents of Mallow. The king was somewhat bumbling and easily distracted, while the queen would often chastise him and keep him on task. This was clearly exhibited when they met Mario's party, as King Nimbus was quickly distracted by the popularity of some of Mallow's new friends and wanted autographs, only for the queen to shut him down and focus on the introductions. Their child Mallow went missing as a baby and ended up in the care of the Frog Sage. The parents grieved and wished for their son's safe return. At some point, Valentina tried to usurp the throne of Nimbus Land and locked the king and queen in the room while claiming that the king had fallen deathly ill. Mario's group eventually defeated Valentina and freed the king and queen. They were reunited with Mallow and helped to direct him for the last steps of the quest. While the king had trouble taking everything seriously, the queen directed them towards Barrel Volcano in search of the sixth Star Piece. After that Star Piece was recovered, they allowed Mario's group to use their Sky Bus to reach Bowser's Keep. During the game's ending, they oversaw Mallow's coronation ceremony and rode a Sky Bus float with him in the ending parade.
- Their initial wish on Star Hill was for Mallow to find their way home. Mallow would react to that wish and learn that his parents were still out there looking for him. After the king and queen were reunited with Mallow, their wish changed into a wish for Mallow to fix the Star Road (or 'Starway' as King Nimbus called it in the Switch version).
- Garro has a statue of King Nimbus as a child, showing that he looked identical to Mallow as a child.
P[edit]
- Pa'Mole
- Dyna and Mite's father, residing in Moleville. When his children went missing in the Mole Mines, Pa'Mole initially went in search of them until he found his progress blocked by a cave-in. After Mario brought him a Microbomb, Pa Mole was able to blow down the roadblock, but he then decided to stay behind so that he would not get in Mario's way. Mario ultimately succeeded in saving Dyna and Mite, and delivered them back home in a mine cart. The whole ordeal only cost the moles one rooftop, which they were able to repair. Afterwards, Pa'Mole worked in the mines with other moles, and they sang the Molesville Blues together.
- Pleaseno
- HP: 900, Attack: 180, Defense: 110, Magic Attack: 80, Magic Defense: 40
- "Been waitin' 100 years!"
- The third of the game's treasure chest enemies. Pleaseno was encountered in a hidden underground area of Bean Valley. Pleaseno knew the powerful Water Blast attack and can summon a Jinnie to aid him. Like the other chest enemies, Pleaseno was only weak against Jump attacks and has Special Defenses against all other special attacks. Unlike the other chest enemies, he left behind no item when defeated, but he did yield a large amount of coins and experience. In the the first English localization on the Super NES, he was named Box Boy instead.
R[edit]
- Raz and Raini
- A young Toad couple living in the Mushroom Kingdom town. Raz's dialogue implied that they only recently became an engaged couple and a couple in general, as Raz told Mario that his friend Raini was now his fiancee. Raz was a blue Toad, and Raini was a pink Toad with blonde hair. The two faced several roadblocks towards their marriage, as first they were trapped in town when Claymorton invaded the Mushroom Kingdom. After Claymorton was defeated, they set off to get married in Marrymore. They also mentioned plans to stop at Star Hill first. At Marrymore, they were initially kept from their wedding when Booster hijacked the church for his attempt to force a wedding with Princess Peach. After Booster was defeated, Raz and Raini were finally married. They traveled to Yo'ster Isle for their honeymoon and stayed there for the remainder of the game. They were still there during the game's ending. According to Raini, Raz could not successfully ride a Yoshi.
- One of the wishes on Star Hill appears to have been made by one or both of them: "Can't wait to start a family."
S[edit]
- Seaside Town Elder
- An elderly Toad who served as the elder of Seaside Town. With the rest of the town's villagers, he was kidnapped and impersonated by Speardovich. Locked in the town's storehouse, Speardovich would threaten Mario into giving up his Star Piece by submitting the elder to a tickle torture. Mario ultimately defeated Speardovich and freed the town's populace. The elder proceeded to resume his duties and advised Mario to stop in Monstro Town next, while warning him of the dangers ahead.
- Snifsters #1-3
- HP: 200, Attack: 60, Defense: 60, Magic Attack: 20, Magic Defense: 20
- "Minimum wage for THIS?!" / "I'm not paid enough for this!"
- (Strong Snifsters) HP: 2200
- "I don't get enough paid vacation. I should get to cash it out at the end of the year!"
- The Snifsters were a trio of Snifits who were promoted due to their exceptional work. They acted as Booster's best friends who lived with him in Booster Tower, and they were often sent out to hunt for beetles for him. Though they seemed enthusiastic, their Thought Peek quotes revealed that they were not satisfied with their pay. They worked extra hard at their job while Booster was entertaining the princess who fell from the sky, and they ended up blurting everything about the situation to a man they cornered while chasing a beetle, a man who turned out to be Mario. Each of the Snifsters could be fought individually as Mario made his way up Booster Tower. At the top of the tower, Booster called the Snifsters together to prepare for the wedding, with the Snifsters teaching Booster what a party is. They decided to hold a rehearsal for the wedding with toys of Mario and Peach. They ended up scrambling to find the Mario toy while the real Mario was hiding behind the curtains. This initiated a minigame in which the Snifsters kept opening curtains in search of the Mario toy. One Snifster searched at first, followed by the second and then the third. If Mario was caught by them, he would have to fight Booster and the three Snifsters in a battle. If he successfully eluded them until Booster joined in, then the battle would be avoided. They continued following and serving Booster as he made his way to Marrymore and then back to the castle, and they acted as rivals in the Booster Hill beetle-catching minigame. In the end credits, they ended up snatching loot from Croco and his Sackit companion. In the post-game rematches for the Switch versions, the Snifsters acted as additional opponents in the battle against Booster and could cheer him on to get him to prepare Engine 023 faster. In their Monster List entry, it was said that they underwent intensive training that consisted of chasing beetles at high speeds and running up hills. As noted below, it was possible for Apprentices to join their ranks, with as many as seven Snifsters ultimately in Booster's ranks. In the original Super NES localization, they were simply called Snifits 1-3.
- Snifster Apprentice
- HP: 120, Attack: 50, Defense: 50, Magic Attack: 20, Magic Defense: 20
- "I've had ENOUGH." / "Being an apprentice is tough! I can't take much more!"
- A Snifit found in a hidden area of Booster Pass. He was in the academy and aspired to become one of Booster's personal servants as Snifster #4. He will challenge Mario to a battle if met, thinking that defeating Mario will guarantee him a place at Booster's side. It is possible to lose the fight without game overing, and this would result in him becoming Snifster #4. He would then be replaced by an identical Apprentice looking to become Snifster #5. The pattern could continue with apprentices looking to become Sniftsters 6 and then 7. The last apprentice would be one seeking to become Snifster #8. If Mario loses to him, it would turn out that there is no room for any Sniftsters beyond #7, and he would instead move on to Grate Guy's Casino.
T[edit]
- Toad
- Toad appeared at several points in the game, mostly in the early parts. He initially showed up at Mario's Pad to pick up Peach and, after discovering that she had been kidnapped again, he accompanied Mario back to the Mushroom Kingdom town. Along the way, Toad was captured and threatened by several monsters who Mario had to free him from. Despite this initial clumsiness, Toad was later able to follow Mario's group into the heart of Weapon World, the most dangerous area in the game, in order to help Mario and the princess by selling them items. He played an additional role in the Switch remake through the Toad Assist ability.
- Toadofsky
- Toadofsky was a troubled composer who often visited the peaceful Tadpole Pond for inspiration. Ultimately his inspiration came from Mario, who taught him songs from across the different regions - Frog Sage's Suite #18, the Moleville Mine Blues and Star Lullaby. Toadofsky rewarded Mario's help with the Alto, Tenor and Soprano Cards, which were used to shop at the local Juice Bar. Toadofsky was seen performing at Tadpole Pond in the ending and on a float with singing Piranha Plants in the ending parade.
- Dr. Topper
- Dr. Topper, also known as Dr. T, is a green Hammer Bro who acted as the quizmaster of Bowser's Keep. He resided behind two of the six optional doors in the castle. Dr. Topper attacks Mario intellectually with a series of riddles and puzzles. These include physical puzzles, counting games, word problems and a trivia quiz.
W[edit]
- Water Crystal
- HP: 1800, Attack: 0, Defense: 130, Magic Attack: 120, Magic Defense: 50
- "Get me back underground!" / "It's so dry here on the surface. I hate it!"
- (Water Crystal 3D) HP: 2800
- "I hate how dry it is on the surface.
- One of the four crystals that joined Culex in battle, based on the elemental crystals from the Final Fantasy series. As suggested by its name, it specialized in water-based magic. It had a Special Defense against Ice attacks and a weakness against Fire attacks. Its Monster List entry mentioned that it needed a damp place in order to spread the healing power of water, which gave and supported life.
- Whuhoh
- HP: 600, Attack: 110, Defense: 90, Magic Attack: 60, Magic Defense: 30
- "You wanna run, huh?!" / "I'm pretty strong, right? You're thinking about running away, right? Right?"
- The second of the game's treasure chest enemies, Whuhoh was found in the Sunken Ship. His special defenses and weak points were identical to Huhwhat's. Additionally, Whuhoh had the ability to summon deadly Mini Goombas to aid him in battle. After being defeated, Whuoh left behind the Safety Badge. He was named Hidon in the original Super NES localization.
- Wind Crystal
- HP: 8000, Attack: 0, Defense: 200, Magic Attack: 60, Magic Defense: 88
- "Whhhhhooooo..." / "Whooooosh..."
- (Wind Crystal 3D) HP: 1800
- "Whoooosh... Swooooosh..."
- One of the four crystals that joined Culex in battle, based on the elemental crystals from the Final Fantasy series. It had the highest Defense of the crystals. As suggested by its name, it specialized in wind-based magic. The Wind Crystal had Special Defenses against Thunder attacks, while being weak against Jump attacks. Its Monster List entry said that "the howls of wind crossing the world and whipping up the atmosphere echo thunderously from it".
- Wizakoopa
- HP: 1600, Attack: 100, Defense: 60, Magic Attack: 120, Magic Defense: 100
- "That's...my child?" / "Eep! Is that the baby from so long ago?"
- A powerful Magikoopa who was shown as the head of Bowser's Magikoopas. While he was initially following Bowser in the aftermath of Smithy taking over the castle, Wizakoopa was separated from Bowser at one point and was brainwashed by Smithy, which causing his blue robes to turn red. He attacked Mario's group (which included Bowser) partway through the castle. In battle, Wizakoopa summoned various enemies, including clones of Jinx and the King Bomb. After being defeated, Wizakoopa's robes turned blue and he was freed from the brainwashing. Wizakoopa apologized and tried to make it up to Bowser by summoning a special treasure box that contained an unlimited amount of coins. He would also heal Mario's party at any time for free. The English localization of the game on the Super NES simply called him Magikoopa, and the Wizakoopa name was introduced in the Switch remake, based on his distinct name in the Japanese version (Kamezaado, combining words for "turtle" and "wizard" as opposed to the standard Japanese name for Magikoopa, Kamekku). Despite being named differently, his status and his Thought Peek entry suggest that he may actually be Kamek.
Y[edit]
- Yoshi
- Mario's dinosaur friend appears at the Yo'ster Isle racetrack. As in other games, Yoshi allows Mario to ride on his back. Yoshi translates the speech of his fellow yoshis for Mario. Mario can also ride him in races against Boshi, in order to make the Yo'ster races fun again. Yoshi also appears when the Yoshi Cookie item is used.
