Flint is a resident of Tazmily Village in the game Mother 3 and the main playable character during the first chapter. He is not a member of the main party, however. Flint dresses like a cowboy and fights with sticks and knives; unlike his sons, he cannot use PSI abilities.

Background

The Beginning

At the start of the game, Flint remains behind in the village while his wife and sons are visiting their grandfather. When the Telly Forest catches on fire, Flint is called upon to help due to his well-known reckless personality. Along with Thomas, another resident of Tazmily, he is sent to save two people that live in the forest, Lighter and Fuel. They manage to do so and head to the inn to rest.

While resting, Flint and the rest of the villagers grow concerned for Flint's family. Flint takes his dog, Boney, and heads back into the forest, where Boney leads him to a cliff. With the help of Duster the thief, they climb the cliff and find a scrap of Hinawa's clothing, as well as a group of Pig Masks. Unable to go further, they return to the village.

Upon returning to the village, Flint learns that his sons have washed into the village from the river. He goes to take care of them, but learns that Hinawa has been killed by the Drago, a dinosaur-like friend of Claus and Lucas. Flint goes into a rage and attacks the other villagers with firewood, then is knocked out by Lighter and locked up.

The Search for Claus

Claus later delivered Flint an apple which contained a file that he used to break the rusted lock and escape the prison. He then went to Hinawa's funeral, where he learned from Lucas that Claus had run off to fight Drago in order to get revenge. Alec then yelled at Lucas, who ran away. Flint and Alec set out to find Claus, with Bronson having given Flint the Drago Fang that had been found in Hinawa's heart because he saw it would be a valuable weapon. Alec first guided them to see the Magypsies, and they then went to Drago's lair in hopes of finding Claus before it was too late.

All they found of Claus at first were his shoes in the Drago's lair. They eventually found the Mecha-Drago that had killed Hinawa, and they were able to slay it. Alec then prevented Flint from also killing the baby drago, which was a friend of Lucas and Claus's. Afterwards, Flint spent his time alternating between searching for Claus in the mountains and mourning for Hinawa at her grave.

The End

Three years later, Flint met up with Lucas again in New Pork City. He went ahead of Lucas in Pokey's tower and confirmed his suspicions that the Masked Boy was actually Claus. Flint related this to Lucas when he caught up and was glad to have found his lost son but also confused as to why he was working for Pokey. Flint later took a hit from the Masked Boy for Lucas and reminded Claus that he had never stopped looking out for him.

After Claus's death, Flint thanked Lucas for all he had done and asked him to forgive Claus for his mistakes. He then urged Lucas to pull the last needle and awaken the dragon so that they could all be protected.

Trivia

• He is named after a flintlock rifle, matching Hinawa being named after Japanese name for a matchlock gun.
• Flint acts as the first instance in the Mother series where the main protagonist's father not only physically appears, but plays a strong role in the story.
• Flint appears as a sticker in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, using a sprite of him from Mother 3.
