Franz is a playable unit appearing in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and is the first recruitable Cavalier in the game.

Background[edit]

Franz was the younger of the two sons of a great knight of Renais. He and his older brother Forde knew their father primarily as their father, and always vied for attention on his shoulder. However, they mother had passed away when Franz was too young to remember, and their father died fighting off an assassin. Forde and Franz were almost always alone, but Forde was eventually able to become a soldier in Renais's army. Franz came to idolize his brother and followed in his footsteps to eventually become a soldier as well. On his off-time, he enjoyed his peaceful hobby of fishing. He was very eager to please the people around him, but he also suffered from a great lack of confidence.

He trained under General Seth and had just recently been sworn in as a Knight when the events of The Sacred Stones began. During the prologue, Seth sent Franz ahead to try and find help from Frelia. Franz wound up meeting with Gilliam and explained the situation to him. Gilliam decided that first they should help Princess Tana, who was in danger at Mulan, but by pure coincidence Eirika and Seth were in the area at the same time in "Chapter 1: Attack!". They then joined with Eirika's forces for the reminder of the war.

Possible Fates[edit]

Franz has two potential endings, depending on whether or not he obtains an A Rank Support with Amelia.

  • Default Ending - He returned to Renais and continued to serve it with the same devotion he had during the War of the Stones, and his generous nature with his easy smile made him a favorite among the people.
  • Amelia and Franz's Ending - Franz brought Amelia to Renais with him, and they eventually married. They then had a daughter who grew to be a great knight herself.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Franz is capable of having Support conversations with five different characters:

  • Amelia - Amelia and Franz meet, and Amelia tells him how glad she is that the people in this army are nicer than in Grado and that there are people her age. Franz notes that they are both around the same age and suggests they become rivals, as he is envious of his brother's rivalry with Kyle. Amelia reluctantly goes along with this, although she says she does not want to fight Franz but he says they will only work together to become stronger and always try to become stronger than the other. In the next conversation, Amelia adjusts to the casual tone that rivals use, and they then discuss the war and Grado, with Amelia admitting her country was wrong in its invasion of Renais and denouncing it. She proclaims she now wants to believe in justice and know that she is doing the right thing. Franz is impressed by her dedication and assures Amelia that he will always be there for her, saying that they can be friends in addition to rivals. In the final conversation, Franz asks her why she wanted to be a soldier, which causes her to recall the bandit story and how she wanted to be strong enough to protect those dear to her. Franz then tells the story of his parents and how he swore to live every moment to its fullest. He then asks if he could walk alongside her in her path in life, saying that they seem to be walking towards the same goal and that he would protect her. This makes her very happy, and Amelia says that as a soldier she could protect him as well and be his shield to protect him, which leads Franz to promise he will be her sword and fight for her. He then assured her that she was not alone anymore.
  • Forde - Forde and Franz compliment each other, and Franz asks Forde about what will happen after the war, but is frustrated by Forde's light-hearted answers. Forde compares Franz to Kyle and tells him that he will make mistakes if he takes everything too seriously, and Franz understands. In the next conversation, Franz finds Forde painting, and Forde questions Franz about his own hobby of fishing. Franz explains the peace that comes with fishing, and Forde suggests that he try to fish and get some food for the army while off-duty. Forde now has something to look forward to, and Franz wonders if it was all about getting him some fresh fish to eat. In the final conversation, Forde thanks him for the fish, and Franz realizes that Forde his his role model. He says that he became a soldier to be like him and will now work much harder to become a great knight like him, which confuses Forde due to his obvious laziness. But Franz sees that Forde only likes to act lazy as part of his charm, as he acts serious in battle and only plays the part of the fool to make the others happy. He goes on to describe his sword, spear and geography skills, while Forde is left shocked and suggests Seth as a role model, but Franz says he only admires Seth. Franz then tells Forde to make sure he does not die and leaves, while Forde says that he needs Franz to survive this war so that they could go home and rebuild their lives.
  • Gilliam - In the first conversation, Franz asks Gilliam if working together worries him because of their different lands and backgrounds, but this annoys Gilliam, who says he does not care who he pairs up with and that it is all the luck of the draw. Franz clarifies that he was wondering if his lesser skills were slowing Gilliam down, but Gilliam tells him that he is wasting his time worrying about that when he could be training. In the next conversation, Franz has improved from his training and is fascinated about the Frelian method of training individual fingers as well. Gilliam is impressed for Franz for progressing without complaint, and Franz tells him about special relaxation exercises he had practiced that prevents fatigue the following day, then promises to teac it to Gilliam when he shows interest. In the final conversation, these exercises lead Gilliam to realize that there is much he can learn from Renais, and Franz becomes excited about Gilliam's approval.
  • Natasha - Franz greets Natasha, and she thanks everyone else for protecting her, although Franz insists he is just a pawn. She is intrigued by his satchel, and he explains its usage, then offers to make one for her. In the next conversation, Natasha is impressed by her satchel, but then Franz has to help her after her hair gets caught in a clip. He then quickly fixes her hair with a comb, although she is confused about why he is carrying around a comb. Franz explains that it is his mother's comb that he brought with him from home as a good-luck charm. Natasha is impressed by Franz's handy abilities and finds herself comforted by his presence, and they hope that this marks the beginning of a new friendship. In the final conversation, Natasha assures him that he can become a great knight due to his pure heart and that he needs more confidence. Franz then gives her his mother's comb, saying that he liked to believe that it protected him and now likes to believe that it will protect her too. Natasha rejects the presence, saying that it belongs to him due to embodying all of his feelings for his mother, while Natasha already feels confidence because Franz is fighting alongside her. She tells him his presence is more than just a good-luck charm and hopes that they can spend more time together fighting for their cause. They then both vow to bring peace to all countries, and to fight for victory and friendship.
  • Seth - After greeting each other, Seth notices that Franz has improved much since they set out in that he seemed much more sure of himself and without doubt. He remarked with confidence that Franz would be the finest spear- and swordsman around when he reached Seth's age. However, he also warned him to mind his limits and keep himself from getting cocky. In the second conversation, Seth continued to observe Franz's progress, but showed irritation at Franz's constant overreactions to his compliments. Franz also told Seth how much he admired him for his impossible feats, such as the escape from Castle Frelia. In the final conversation, Franz once more felt honored when Seth talked to him, but Seth told Franz that he was the one who should feel honored. He explained that he had used to look up to Forde and Franz's father when he was just a squire and considered him the greatest knight in history. Franz then reminisced about his family's troubled past and how he grew up hearing about the great knight he was but only remembered his shoulder which he and Forde had vied for a position on prior to the father's death. Seth then told Franz that he strongly resembled his father, and voiced his belief that Franz had inherited his spirit, and explained that he was honored to see the skill of the man he had idolized developing in the man's son. This led Franz to vow to become a greater knight than his father or brother, and they both vowed to do the best they could for Franz's father as well as Renais.
