Frillish is a ghostly jellyfish-like Pokémon that was introduced in the fifth generation games. Its evolved form is Jellicent.

Information

Frillish resembles a large jellyfish with thin, veil-like arms. They usually wrap these arms around their opponents, paralyze them with poison and then sink to the ocean floor. Frillish usually take their prey to their lairs, which are located above five miles underwater.

It evolves into Jellicent at Level 40.

In Pokémon: Black and White Versions, they appeared commonly when surfing at Routes 4, 17 and 18, Driftveil City and P2 Laboratory and were the only Pokémon to appear when normally surfing in those areas.

• In the Pokémon anime, a male Frillish has been shown as one of Trip's Pokémon. It was able to defeat Ash's Snivy in battle despite a type disadvantage.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "frill" (due to its arms being somewhat frilly) and "jellyfish".
• Male Frillish are blue while females are pink. This gender difference is retained by Jellicent, and this evolutionary line along with Unfezant are the only fifth generation Pokémon with notable gender differences.
• According the the designers, Frillish's gender differences were based on a prince and princess, and they were originally made as a "cute" Water-type. However, they had to be made Ghost-type as well to accommodate more balance amongst the Pokémon types, which resulted in the designer being disappointed by the horror elements that were added to Frillish and Jellicent's Pokédex enteries.
