Kabutops is a blade-armed fossil Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the evolved form of Kabuto.
Information[edit]
Kabutops is an extinct creature that evolves from Kabuto at Level 40. Its body has a sleek shape which is perfect for swimming. Kabutops tuck in its limbs to become more compact and then wiggles its shell to move fast underwater. They are known to have swum underwater in search of prey, although they were apparently evolving to live on land due to changes observed in their gills and legs. It is believed that Kabutops came to live on land because its prey had already evolved to live on land.
Their most notable features were the razor-sharp sickles that they had for claws. Kabutops were known to slash prey apart with their claws and then drain its body fluids. It is not stated how Kabutops came to be extinct but may have had to do with its adaptation to life on land.
Appearances[edit]
Mainstream Games[edit]
Kabutops could only be obtained through evolution of Kabuto.
Other Games[edit]
It could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Trozei!, Kabutops appeared at Secret Storage 10 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the first nineteen basement floors of Marine Resort, and a nonrecruitable Kabutops appeared as the boss of the Brine Cave with two Omastar. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Dangerous Cliff and Ice Temple. Kabutops also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Rocky Cave.
Other Appearances[edit]
Other Media[edit]
- In the Pokémon anime, Kabutops was first shown in one episode where it and all other first generation fossil Pokémon were awakened from a slumber underneath a canyon and caused havoc until the cave was sealed. In the fifth Pokémon movie, one of the antagonists, Oakley, revived both a Kabutops and an Aerodactyl to capture Latias. They attacked Ash's group to do so, but they were reverted into fossils by the end of the movie.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Brock had a Kabutops in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc which evolved from a Kabuto that he got from Pewter City Museum during the invasion of the Yellow arc.
Trivia[edit]
- Its name seems to be based on "kabutonagi" (Japanese for "horseshoe crab", although the description fits better with Kabuto) or "kabuto" (which is Japanese for "helmet", as Kabutops has a helmet-like head) and possibly "tops" as in the name of dinosaurs like triceratops.
