The Magic Mirror (also known as the Magical Mirror in the Japanese text) is a special item connected to the Dark World that appeared in A Link to the Past.

Information[edit]

The Magic Mirror is initially held by the lost old man on Death Mountain, and he gives it to Link as a reward for escorting him into his home. It is described as a beautiful mirror which looks like it can absorb one into another world. Its primary use is in the Dark World, where Link can look into it at any time to transport himself back to the light world of Hyrule. This is the only way Link can leave the Dark World. Using the mirror in certain areas of the Dark World could allow Link to reach normally out-of-reach areas of the light world. However, he would be instantly returned to the Dark World if he would be returned to a place where it would be impossible for him to stand due to gameplay mechanics.

The mirror could also be used to return to the entrances of dungeons.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Japanese text, the mirror is later specifically mentioned by one of the maidens, who refers to it as something that only the Hero could master.
  • There have been several mirror items with similar functions (acting as portals to a dark world) in later games. Most notably, there is the Mirror of Twilight from Twilight Princess, which opens a portal to the Twilight Realm, but it could only be used from the light side. A Dark Mirror also appeared in Four Swords Adventures, which does not seem to be directly connected to that game's Dark World, but it still holds an imprisoned dark tribe and is used to produce Shadow Links. One aspect separating these mirrors from the Magic Mirror, aside from being connected to different worlds, is that they are substantially larger mirrors, while the Magic Mirror is small enough to hold in the hand.
  • According to unused text for Four Swords Adventures, the Magic Mirror was planned to be included in the game at some point, but it was ultimately removed.
