Mantine is a floating manta-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It had no evolution line until the fourth generation, when it was discovered to evolve from Mantyke. They are often accompanied by scavenging Remoraid.
Information[edit]
Mantine will only give birth to a Mantyke (as opposed to the offspring coming out of the egg as a Mantine) when it is bred while holding Water Incense. Mantyke evolves into Mantine when it levels up while a Remoraid is in the party. Mantine are docile and easygoing Pokémon that swim freely and majestically in the open seas. They have coarse bodies and eat things that swim into their mouths. Remoraid often attach themselves to Mantine's undersides to scavenge for food from Mantine's scraps, and the Mantine seem to be indifferent to their presence.
If it builds up enough speed, a Mantine can elegantly fly out of the water and over the waves. Whole schools of Mantine can be seen leaping over waves on sunny days.
Appearances[edit]
Mainstream Games[edit]
In Pokémon: Gold, Crystal and HeartGold, Mantine were uncommonly found when surfing at Route 41. In LeafGreen, they rarely appeared when surfing at Tanoby Ruins and Trainer Tower. In Black and White, it had a rare chance of appearing when surfing in rippling water at Undella Town and Undella Bay (during all seasons except winter).
Other Games[edit]
A Shadow Mantine could be snagged from Miror B. Peon Ferma at Pyrite Town in Pokémon Colosseum, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Trozei!, Mantine was found at Secret Storage 14, Endless Level 12, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, it could be recruited only on the thirtieth floor of Grand Sea, while in Blue Rescue Team and Wonder Mail mission had to be completed in which a Kirlia had to be escorted to Mantine at the third floor of Tiny Woods. In Explorers of Time and Darkness it was found at Miracle Sea and Deep Miracle Sea. In Pokémon Ranger, it was found at Safra Sea. It appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Puel Sea and the Sea of Wailord. It also appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs at Eastern Sea.
Other Appearances[edit]
Other Media[edit]
- In the Pokémon anime, one episode of the Johto series featured a Mantine with Remoraid which guarded a sunken ship that contained the Silver Wing. It battled Ash's group at first but later worked with them to stop Team Rocket. Mantine have made various other appearances throughout the anime, such as belonging to unofficial Johto gym leader Dorian and Brock's mother Lola.
- In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Mantine was first shown in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc where Gold caught one on his way to the Whirl Islands, and he used it during his battle against Lugia. With the support of a swarm of Remoraid that Crystal originally caught, the Mantine was able to fly. Mantine was also shown as one of Team Aqua's Pokémon during the Ruby/Sapphire arc. During the Emerald arc, Noland had a Mantine that he gave to Emerald.
Trivia[edit]
- Its name is a combination of "manta" with "marine".
- Remoraid has been included in Mantine's battle sprite until the fourth generation, likely to lessen confusion about Mantyke's evolution, although it remains part of Mantine's official artwork.
