Ralph is a supporting character appearing in The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages and a childhood friend of the titular oracle Nayru as well as a descendant of Queen Ambi.

Background

Ralph grew up with Nayru in Labrynna and was very attached to her, to the point where he was always trying to protect her. He was confident in his abilities and often thought that he was the only person who could properly protect Nayru. However, in Oracle of Ages Veran was able to possess Nayru and travel back in time to alter history by manipulating Queen Ambi. Ralph became determined to rescue Nayru, thinking that Link was not capable, and set off on his own quest, which he started by entering the time portal that Veran had left behind. His and Link's journeys intersected at times. Although Ralph assumed Link to be caught in meaningless sidequests, his advice unintentionally helped Link to draw closer to defeating Veran.

Ralph later helped Link to sneak into Queen Ambi's palace through a secret passage (which he seemed to know about due to being descended from her), although it was Link who ultimately exorcised Veran from Nayru's body. Veran than possessed Ambi, but Nayru was able to escape with Link and Ralph back to the present. Ralph's new goal was to generally stop Veran so that she could not menace Nayru again. This led him to go to the Black Tower in the past and attempt to stop Veran even if he had to kill Ambi (and theoretically negate his own existence) to do it.

He ultimately could not bring himself to do the deed and was defeated by Veran, but she left him alive (presumably to give Link less reason to want to kill Ambi). Link was able to destroy Veran, and afterwards Ralph commended Link for his abilities and vowed to train harder so that he could protect Nayru more efficiently. The ending showed him dizzying himself in a failed attempt to imitate Link's spin attack.

• Ralph appeared in the Oracle of Ages manga adaptation with an expanded role. His single-minded devotion to finding and saving Nayru was played up for comic relief. He eventually makes his way to the past with the Harp of Ages and accompanies Link for most of the manga, at one point being possessed by Veran to destroy their stock of Mystery Nuts. In this version, he also aided in the final battle with Ganon.

Trivia

• Ambi describes Ralph as being her "grandson's grandson's grandson", while Ralph calls Ambi his "great great great great great great grandmother".
