Nayru is a supporting character featured in the game The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages. She is the Oracle of Ages who poses as a singer.
Background[edit]
Oracle of Ages[edit]
Nayru lives in Labrynna, where she poses as a diva to protect herself from danger. She was often accompanied by her childhood friend, Ralph, who was eager to protect her and had feelings for her. She was shown to be quite calm and peaceful, and she often performed for animals in a sacred grove. She also possessed an item called the Harp of Ages which had time traveling capabilities when certain songs were played, although she did not play it often due to her own time-traveling abilities and left it in the basement of her house.
In Oracle of Ages, she was performing for a group of animals and people when Impa and Link came to protect her due to a prophetic dream experienced by Princess Zelda. She also felt evil approaching and was troubled by it. However, it soon turned out that Impa had actually been possessed by Veran to get close to Nayru, at which point Veran moved out of her body to possess Nayru. The possessed Nayru traveled back in time four hundred years and became an adviser to Queen Ambi, using her powers to create a never-ending day and twisting Ambi's desires to make her use her people as slave labor to construct a Black Tower that would empower Veran. This also caused much darkness to occur in Labrynna's present.
However, Link was able to travel to the past with the aid of the Harp of Ages and forced Veran out of Nayru's body with Veran's weakness, the Mystery Seeds, at which point Veran possessed Ambi herself. Nayru then returned to the present and stayed at her home, seeing little else she could do, while Link collected the remaining Essences of Time for use in defeating Veran. However, she and Impa (as well as Zelda in a linked game) confronted Link when he was about to climb the Black Tower to warn him that Ralph had already gone up to confront the possessed Ambi with the intention of killing Ambi to stop Veran. This situation was made even more dire due to the discovery that Ralph was descended from Ambi and thus would die with Ambi.
Luckily Link was able to destroy Veran and save Ralph, after which Nayru was there to thank him. Nayru also granted Ambi's request by sending her own a journey across various times and places which would lead to her meeting her long-lost suitor in a linked Seasons game. After both Veran and Onox were destroyed, and Zelda was captured by Twinrova, Nayru and Din combined their powers to create a portal to their hide-out. Nayru then welcomed Link and Zelda back after they returned. In the credits of a normal game she is seen playing her harp for a group of animals as well as Maple, while in a linked game's endings she is last seen carrying groceries through town with Ralph while followed by several children.
Later Games[edit]
In The Minish Cap, Nayru appeared with Din and Farore as lodgers looking for a home in Hyrule Castle Town. Over the course of the game, Link could set them up with a house to move into, but only two houses were available in the game, so one of the girls was still without a home at the game's end. If Link gave Nayru a home, she would give him a charm whenever he has an empty bottle to hold it. Her charm temporarily turned Link's tunic blue and boosted his defense when used.
Her figurine description said that she was descended from a line of priestesses in Labrynna, meaning that she was likely related to the Nayru seen in Oracle of Ages. With The Minish Cap being one of the first games in the timeline, this game's Nayru would be the other Nayru's ancestor.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, she appeared as a Support Spirit, represented by her artwork from Oracle of Ages. Her Support effect was to allow the player's fighter to reflect projectiles when a perfect shield was conjured. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Naryu's spirit possessed two duplicates of Princess Zelda. In battle, they only used the Nayru's Love ability and would have periods of temporary invincibility.
Other Media[edit]
- Nayru appears in the manga adaptation of Oracle of Ages, with a role identical to her role in the game.
Trivia[edit]
- Concept art implies that she was originally planned to be an artist. This reflects the original aesthetic that was planned for Oracle of Ages when it was known as Mystical Seed of Wisdom, which would have been a focus on color-themed gameplay mechanics.
