Tatl is Link's fairy companion from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

Background

Tatl was a fairy known for her abrasive personality, although she mostly acted that way towards those whom she was unfamiliar with. She usually traveled through Termina with her brother Tael. They found the Skull Kid alone in a rainstorm at Termina Field one day and decided to cheer him up. The Skull Kid quickly became best friends with the two of them, and they committed various acts of mischief together.

Things changed when the Skull Kid decided to jump the Happy Mask Salesman and mugged Majora's Mask from him. Majora's Mask began to change the Skull Kid when he started wearing it, giving him powers and causing his "pranks" to slowly escalate and become more harmful. Eventually the Skull Kid wound up passing into the Lost Woods of Hyrule with Tatl and Tael, where he had them startle the horse Epona as she rode past in order to knock out the person riding it, a young boy named Link. The Skull Kid stole the horse and Link's possessions, then took off. Link caught up to them as they went through the passage to Termina, and Tatl watched as Skull Kid used Majora's Mask to turn Link into a Deku Scrub.

Tatl tried to prevent the transformed Link from pursuing the Skull Kid, but this caused her to be left behind while he and Tael escaped. Although she claimed this was Link's fault, Tatl reluctantly decided to accompany Link and help him until they could find the Skull Kid. With the help of Tatl's advice, Link was able to perform various deeds over the next three days which helped him reach the top of the Clock Tower, where the Skull was waiting. During this time, it also became clear that Skull Kid was bringing the moon slowly closer so that it would crash into Clock Town and cause an apocalypse at the end of the third night.

They finally confronted the Skull Kid and Tael atop Clock Tower when the moon was just hours from collision. She suggested that Skull Kid removed the mask and was ignored. Tael then tried to warn Link and Tatl that they should search for four different people in four specific regions of Termina, but Skull Kid silenced him by slapping him to the side. This angered Tatl and caused her to denounce him as a friend. She then proceeded to panic about the impending doom which the moon posed and implored Link to do something. Link wound up retrieving the Ocarina of Time and playing the Song of Time, which caused Link and Tatl to be sent back in time to the dawn of the first day they arrived at Clock Town.

Since he had his ocarina back, Link was able to learn the Song of Healing from the Happy Mask Salesman and was finally restored to his true Hylian self. The Happy Mask Salesman than warned them other dangers of Majora's Mask, which gave them further reason to try to retrieve it from the Skull Kid. Tatl suggested that they follow Tael's advice by exploring the four different regions he specified, even though she was confused as to who Tael wanted them to find. They first headed for the southern swamp, where Link was able to purify the area by destroying Odolwa within Woodfall Temple. Odolwa's destruction freed one of the four mysterious giants, whom Tatl realized must have been the figures that Tael had referred to one. In the aftermath of this, Tatl complimented Link on his work and finally apologized to him for the trouble she caused him earlier with the Skull Kid.

Tatl continued to guide Link as he destroyed the evil influences in the other three regions and free the other giants throughout various cycles of going back in time to prevent themselves from being destroyed by the falling moon. After all four giants had been freed, Link and Tatl met the Skull Kid atop the Clock Tower again. This time Link was able to play the Oath to Order, summoning the giants who held the moon up from falling. The Skull Kid was knocked out, and Tatl and Teal were happily reunited with the crisis apparently over. They argued over whether or not Skull Kid was responsible for his actions, as Tael claimed that Skull Kid was lonely and overpowered by the evil power of the mask, but Tatl did not find this a fitting excuse and blamed the Skull Kid for having no strength of heart.

Their argument was broken up when Majora's Mask itself came to life, discarding the unconscious Skull Kid and retreating into the moon while imploring Link to follow it. Tatl panicked and wanted to go back in time again until she saw that both Link and Tael wanted to pursue Majora's Mask into the moon. She was convinced by Tael's growing stubbornness and entered the portal with Link. Tatl then helped to advise him in the final battle with Majora's Mask, which resulted in its evil spirit being destroyed and the moon's threat being eliminated. Link and Tatl were returned to Termina Field on the dawn of the new fourth day, where they met up with Tael and the restored Skull Kid. Link and Tatl had both gotten what they were seeking in the first place, so Tatl decided that it was time for them to part ways. Link went off to continue her travels while Tatl remained with the Skull Kid and Tael to celebrate Clock Town's Festival of Time. As Link rode away on Epona, Tatl silently thanked him and was comforted by Tael.

• Tatl and Tael appeared in Hyrule Warriors accompanying Skull Kid. They acted in many of his attacks while being commanded by his ocarina.

Trivia

• Her name is a pun on "tattle", which complements Tael being named after "tale". The combined play on "tattle tale" is a reference to the expository nature of fairies within the series as well as the immature nature of both Tatl and Tael.
• Her speech is signified by a light bell chiming, as opposed to Navi's vocal cries of "Hey!" and "Listen!" from the previous game, most likely due to complaints about Navi annoying players.
• In Breath of the Wild, there is a lake named Lake Telta which may be named in reference to Tatl, as it is located in the same region as lakes named after Navi and Ciela.
