The Sand Rod (originally known as the Sand Wand in Spirit Tracks) is a magical item that has appeared in several games of the The Legend of Zelda series. As its name implies, the Sand Rod has power over sand. It is used to raise sand walls from any sandy surface, which can harm enemies, unearth secrets and provide an elevated surface for Link to walk on.

Appearances[edit]

The Sand Rod originally appeared in Spirit Tracks, where it was found within the Sand Temple. In this game, the stylus was used to guide the range of sand to be raised, and Link could even raise sand while standing on it.

In A Link Between Worlds, the Sand Rod was among the items available at Ravio's shop. At the beginning of the game, Osfala had rented it and believed that it made him practically invincible. He was soon defeated by Yuga and trapped in a painting with the Sand Rod. After Link recovered Osfala's painting from Thieves Town and restored him to normal, the Sand Rod was restored as well, but Ravio's bird quickly arrived to take it back for the store. At this point, the Sand Rod became available for rent (at 50 Rupees) or to buy (at 800 Rupees). After being purchased, it would be upgraded into a Nice Sand Rod by Mother Maiamai.

The rod worked somewhat differently in A Link Between Worlds. It could only create sand pillars in a straight line directly ahead of Link, without any stylus guidance or the option to raise the sand beneath Link. After being upgraded to the Nice Sand Rod, any erected sand pillars would no longer dissolve after a set amount of time, and instead they would only collapse after new sand pillars were made.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In Hyrule Warriors, the Sand Rod was a class of weapon that could be used by Toon Link. It was unlocked as part of a Phantom Hourglass/Spirit Tracks DLC pack in the first two versions of the game or through the Grand Travels Map in the Definitive Edition. The lowest level weapon of the class was simply called the Sand Rod, while the advanced weapons were respectively known as the Jeweled Sand Wand, Nice Sand Wand, Nice Sand Wand + and Darkfire Nice Sand Rod.
