Sudowoodo is a tree-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation Pokémon games. It was rare Pokémon which could only encountered once per game (in a manner similar to Snorlax from the first generation),but the Pokémon has since become more common starting in the fourth generation games. The same generation introduced Bonsly as its baby form.

Information

Sudowoodo is a small Pokémon that resembles a tree. However, it is actually a Rock-type and merely imitates a tree to avoid being attacked. Sudowoodo can be easily distinguished from actual trees during the winter, as its forelegs remain green even though most plantlife is dead during that season. Sudowoodo is also known for its hatred of water, leading it to seek shelter from rain. Inert Sudowoodo could also be awakened by being sprinkled with water.

Sudowoodo evolves from a baby form, Bonsly, after Bonsly levels up with the move Mimic. Sudowoodo will only hatch an egg containing a Bonsly as opposed to a Sudowoodo if one of the parents was holding a Rock Incense while being bred.

In Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, a Sudowoodo is found blocking Route 36 and could be awakened by sprinkling it with the Squirtbottle item. In Emerald, it is found on the Battle Frontier and is woken with the Wailmer Pail.

In Pearl and Platinum, Sudowoodo were uncommonly found at Routes 214 (Pearl only) and 221.

Other Games

Sudowoodo appears in Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness. In Colosseum, a Shadow Sudowoodo could be snagged from Cipher Admin Miror B. starting in the first battle against him at his hideout, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. Sudowoodo was also featured in the e-Reader minigame "Sneak and Snatch", where it sneaked up on a Totodile to take its fruit without being caught, as Totodile would spray it with water. In Pokémon Channel, it can be found on Mt. Snowfall on cloudy days or evenings.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Sudowoodo is found in Secret Storage 4, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Sudowoodo could be recruited at the first four floors of Sinister Woods, while in Explorers of Time and Darkness it appeared at the second through ninth floors of Shimmer Desert. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Chroma Road and Haruba Village. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Sophian Road and the Forest Temple. Sudowoodo also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, it was found at the Meadow Zone and Cavern Zone.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Sudowoodo's likeness was originally used for one of the floats of the Poké Floats stage in Super Smash Bros. Melee. It has also been represented by a trophy in Melee and a Novice-rank Support Spirit (which lengthened the duration of transformations) in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Sudowoodo's Spirit would possess a green Ridley which focused on using smash attacks and gained a weakness to water. It was also joined in the battle by two smaller red Ridley duplicates, possibly representing Sudowoodo's attempt to blend in among trees, and the battle would only be won with the defeat of the first Ridley.

• Sudowoodo was featured in an episode of the Pokémon anime set in the Johto area, which revolved around the confusion as to Sudowoodo's type. During the Advanced Generation series, a trainer modified his Sudowoodo to resist water which made it golden, but it also made the Soodowoodo resentful of him. At the end of the episode, it was returned to normal. Brock also had a Bonsly which evolved into a Sudowoodo in the Sinnoh series. Sudowoodo became more powerful and upbeat.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Sudowoodo was shown in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc where it blocked the route along which Gold and Whitney were having a bicycle race. It turned out that the Sudowoodo was trying to hide from a Rhydon, and it was awakened by a water attack from Gold's Politoed. Gold helped it to defeat the Rhydon, and Sudowoodo then became a main part of Gold's team. Emerald later caught his own apparently female Sudowoodo at the Battle Frontier in the Emerald arc, and the two Sudowoodo have bonded.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of a play on "pseudo" and "wood", which represents that Sudoowoodo appears to be wooden but is not.
