Tethys is a recruitable unit from Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones and is the game's only Dancer.

Background[edit]

Tethys and Ewan were siblings who were abandoned by their parents while Ewan was still young. They were both poor and homeless for some time until Tethys, being the older sister, sought to a way to help them both. She watched a street dancer and memorized all of her moves, which was difficult as she was an uncoordinated child. She suffered a lot, but she stopped herself from crying for Ewan's sake, as he cried whenever she did. Tethys eventually perfected her dancing style, and she was able to raise Ewan by herself. At one point, they met Gerik, and she became part of his group of mercenaries. Tethys danced for various clients in order to raise money, and with the mercenaries her dances were able to keep the others fighting even though she herself could not fight others directly. She also seemed to keep track of the group's resources. Tethys was flirtatious with most men she met, but she only seemed to have a genuine yet secret crush on Gerik himself.

She first made a cameo appearance at a house in Serafew in "Chapter 5: The Empire's Reach", where she would give a Dragonshield that she did not have room for to whoever visited her. Gerik's mercenaries were later sent to accompany Prince Innes of Frelia to Carcino, although what happened next depended on the path. In Ephraim's path, Innes did not need the mercenaries and instead sent them to Ephraim, meeting him by Za'albul Marsh in "Chapter 13: Fluorspar's Oath". In Eirika's Path, Gerik and Tethys stayed with Innes instead and fought alongside him at Carcino in "Chapter 10: Revolt at Carcino", and both of them were willing to die alongside Innes despite his attempts to make them save themselves. Eirika's army eventually came to help them, and Gerik and Tethys decided to remain as part of these expanded forces, and Innes in turn decided to double their pay. In both paths, she soon crossed paths with Ewan, whom had been undergoing training to be a mage and wanted to help. Tethys only accepted his help reluctantly, as she thought he was too young to be on the battlefield. They remained as part of Eirika and Ephraim's bodies for the remainder of the War of the Stones, and they were then left pondering their next moves as well as the state of affairs in Jehanna.

Possible Fates[edit]

Tethys has two different endings, depending on whether or not she reaches an A Support rank with Gerik.

  • Default Ending - Tethys danced from city to city across the continent. She gradually became more famous, and people gathered everywhere she performed.
  • Gerik and Tethys's Ending - The two of them did not belong to any nation or follow any greater authority. They were able to buy themselves a leisurely retirement. Tethys danced on a variety of stages while Gerik taught fencing to city youths. The nature of their relationship is not addressed.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Tethys is capable of having support conversations with the following five characters:

  • Artur - In the first conversation, she calls Artur to her, referring to him as "child" and has him perform a spin for her. Tethys notes his graceful form, calls him beautiful and invites him to become her dancing partner when the war ends. She sees no future for him in the church business, but Artur disagrees and sees it as his calling. Tethys tells him to think about it, but Artur does not think it is for him. In the second conversation, she bothers him in the middle of a battle to ask him if he's been practicing dance moves. After he complains about being called a child, she tells him there's nothing wrong with looking young and asks to touch his cheeks, which she does before he actually answers. Tethys than gets the secret of his fresh skin (rubbing manon leaves) from him and leaves after reminding him to practice his dance steps. In the final conversation, Artur angrily protests against her treatment of him, but she brushes it off to complain about getting a rash when she tried Artur's manon leaf method. Tethys has him feel the rash, and he sees it is very little but then blushes when he realizes how close their faces are. They confirm that his heart begins thumping around Tethys all the time, and she admits that he reminds her of her first love who moved away when they were ten. Artur mentions that Tethys also reminds him of his mother, and she briefly teases him for being a mama's boy. Tethys then asserts her seriousness in wanting Artur to think about becoming a dancer, and he then struggles to catch up with her as he attempts to object to this once more.
  • Ewan - The first conversation starts with Ewan wanting Tethys to check out his magic, but she is annoyed that he is misbehaving and considers him too young to do things on the battlefield. Ewan assures her that even though he is not yet a full-fledged mage, he will grow into being one of the best mages ever. He then runs off, with Tethys reflecting that his boasts only made him look more childish. In the next conversation, Ewan approaches Tethys and wonders why she has been getting friendly with a lot of the men in the army lately. She begins to muse about this, but she then changes the topic when she realizes that Ewan is jealous, and she suspects that he is the cause of some random pranks that had been pulled on the men. Ewan initially denies it, but then he says it is because they are braggarts and jerks who deserved it. Tethys agrees to keep his secret but requests that he stop. Ewan complies, and then he tells her that he will always be there to protect her and that he was not too young for that. He also asked her to dance for him once in a while, certain that it would make him stronger. In the last conversation, Ewan suggests that she is dancing too close to the front lines, and she thanks him for worrying about him and then teases him by asking if it was just the jealousy talking. Tethys tells Ewan that he has grown stronger and is no longer a novice, which makes her glad and a little sad. She tells him that she is so much older than him that she always thought of him as a child and thus always thought she had to protect him. Ewan tells her that he did treat this as a game at first until he saw the dangers that Tethys faced to help everyone, and he then he knew he had to get serious and boost his powers. He hopes to return the favor for all the time that she had protected him, since he is now the man of the family. Tethys tells him that he does not need to rush off on his own and that she would be sad if he did not need her anymore. Ewan assures her that no matter how old he gets, she will always be his one and only big sister.
  • Gerik - The dancer tells Gerik that she's been dancing so much lately that she might shed even more weight and become 'more alluring', leading the two to banter about dinner and a 'treasure' Gerik would soon find. When Gerik asks Tethys when she first became a dancer, she promises to tell him about it later. In their later conversation, Tethys tells Gerik the story of how they were abandoned as a child and Tethys learned to dance by imitating another dancer. When they speak next, Tethys asks Gerik about his scar. He explains how he used to be cocky in battle and he received the scar from a superior knight who spared his life. The two decide that because the dancer and the knight served as their inspirations, they should work on doing the same for others.
  • Marisa - When Tethys asks Marisa about whether she's left handed, Marisa explains that she can use either hand, but that her left hand is her stronger one and that she consequently sleeps on her right arm to that her sword arm is always at the ready. When they speak again, Marisa asks if Tethys is right handed due to the way she dances, but Tethys explains that the way she dances comes from her experiences in life. Later Tethys asks if Marisa would ever like to reborn as something different, such as a dancer. However Marisa insists she can't imagine living other life. When Tethys changes to subject about them both being rivals for Gerik's affections, Marisa gets flustered and quickly excuses herself.
  • Rennac - Rennac introduces himself to Tethys and is disappointed that she hasn't heard of him. She is too busy to tallk to him at the moment, so Rennac decided to engage her later and suggests that she dance for him alone. Tethys asks if he is trying to woo her, wanting him to stop if so, but Rennac denies this while also saying that many women who turn him down wind up coming around to him eventually. Tethys says she will keep an eye on him and possibly change his mind, and he leaves with this. She is left hoping that he did not take her seriously and did not get his hopes up too high. In the next conversation, Rennac briefly checks with Tethys, and she says only that he seems "unobjectionable" and still has a long way to go. At her suggestion, Rennac decides to try to get her a gift but has trouble thinking of one. In the last conversation, Rennac brings her some gem-encrusted object that she had requested, even though she did not seem to remember what she had asked for. He asks if she has been avoiding him, but Tethys denies this. Tethys tells him that she has only learned from this that he is a hard worker, and she still does not yet consider him to be a good catch. The conversation ends with Tethys beginning to describe a different gift she desires.
