Tierno is a Pokémon trainer who appeared as a supporting character in Pokémon X and Y. He is one of the young trainers traveling the Kalos region on Professor Sycamore's behalf and can be battled several times over the course of the game, making him akin to a friendly rival.

Background[edit]

Tierno was a friendly young Pokémon trainer whose true passion was dancing. He and Trevor were chosen by Professor Sycamore to explore the Kalos region in order to help with his research. Each of them was a given a Pokémon and a Pokédex by the professor. As a Pokémon trainer, he was not especially skilled, especially as he tended to be distracted by thinking of Pokémon as dance teams and focusing on their moves being like dance moves. Sometime afterwards, the two of them were sent to Aquacord Town to meet three more new trainers: Calem/Serena, Serena/Calem and Shauna. Tierno was entrusted with three Pokémon (Chespin, Fenniken and Froakie) to let the trainers chose from as their starter Pokémon. When meeting them, he also suggested using nicknames and then set off with Trevor to look for Pokémon. Calem/Serena could then run into Tierno at some of the subsequent areas, and he also taught the trainer about Pokémon Centers at Santalune City.

The other trainers also met up with Professor Sycamore at his laboratory in Lumiose City, where Sycamore encouraged them to be the best trainers that they could be. Tierno felt that he could only stand a chance of being the best trainer if it had something to do with dancing. Soon after, Tierno called Calem/Serena over to Route 5 after seeing hordes of Pokémon, which reminded him of dance teams. Tierno then challenged the trainer to a battle, in order to see if their Pokémon knew any sweet moves. Tierno lost, but he set himself on a dream of creating the best Pokémon dance team. At Route 7, the group checked out the Day Care, and a Multi Battle was held with Calem/Serena and Serena/Calem against Tierno and Trevor. Afterwards, Tierno could be found at the Reflecting Cave, where he admitted that he had to use the move Flash to keep wild Pokémon away due to his lack of skill as a trainer.

At Shalour City, Tierno gave Calem/Serena an Intriguing Stone that a wandering stone collector had given him in exchange for showing off his dance moves. He believed it to secretly be a Mega Stone, but it ultimately turned out to just be an ordinary rock. The group then proceeded to the Tower of Mastery in order to meet the Mega Evolution guru, Gurkinn. Gurkinn had only one Mega Ring to bestow to the trainers, and Tierno quickly passed on the offer due to his lack of passion for battling. He was then surprised that Calem/Serena and Serena/Calem battled to decide who would get the Mega Ring, because the idea of friends doing so was surprising to him. Tierno was then late to a meeting at Route 14, because he had gotten caught up in a sparring dance at a Fighting Dojo. Once he arrived, the group visited a house where they listened to a scary story. Tierno then appeared by the Poké Ball Factory, where he went after Shauna and Trevor after a member of Team Flare started chasing them. During the crisis in which Team Flare was activating the ultimate weapon, Tierno worked with Sina and Dexio to save the Pokémon connected to the stones on Route 10, although the latter two handled most of the battling.

At Route 19, Calem/Serena had to battle Shauna, Tierno and Trevor in succession. Tierno wanted to battle the trainer, because he realized that if that trainer hadn't stopped Team Flare, he would not be able to dance anymore. So, Tierno wanted to get to know the trainer better and also thank them in the form of a battle, although he also acknowledged his motives as selfish. After Calem/Serena became champion, Tierno could be found at Coumarine City. There, he would ask the trainer to show him a Pokémon that knows a dance-related move each day, with the move changing on a daily basis. He would give out a Heart Scale in exchange for seeing the correct Pokémon. Tierno could also appear as a partner for Multi Battles at the Battle Maison.

Pokémon Roster[edit]

  • Corphish/[[Crawdaunt}]: Corphish is the only Pokémon that Tierno uses during the first battle and the Multi Battle. It then becomes a Crawdaunt before the third battle with Tierno.
  • Talonflame: He uses Talonflame for the third battle and also at the Battle Masion.
  • Roserade: He uses this Pokémon only in the third battle.
  • Hawlucha: He uses this Pokémon only at the Battle Maison.

Other Appearances[edit]

Other Media[edit]

  • In the Pokémon anime, he appeared as a recurring character during the X/Y-based series along with Shauna and Trevor. His personality was similar to the games, although this version showed greater skill at battle, as he knew how to strategically use Pokémon's dance moves during battle. His starter Pokémon was a Squirtle (which ultimately evolved into a Blastoise), and he also had a tendency to collect Pokémon known for their dance moves, such as Hitmontop and Ludicolo. Another difference from the games was that he took part in the gym challenge and won all eight badges. He made it to the semifinals of the Lumiose Conference, where he lost to Sawyer.
    • He also made a cameo appearance in the twentieth Pokémon movie, which was set in a new continuity. In this version, Tierno hailed from Pallet Town in Kanto and was seen selecting a Charmander as his starter Pokémon at the beginning of the movie.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Tierno was featured in the X/Y arc as one of the main characters. In this version, his dancing skills extended to being skilled with roller blades. At the end of the arc, he formed his own dance group with former members of the Lumiose Gang.

Trivia[edit]

  • His name is the same in Japanese and English, and he is named after the Spanish word for "tender", likely in reference to his sensitive personality.
  • His suggested nickname for the player character is the first letter of the character's name followed by a hyphen and either "Meister" or "Lady", depending on the character's gender.
  • His nicknames for Trevor and Shauna are Trevs and Shaunee, respectively.
