Background[edit]
Ulki, along with Janaff served as a loyal retainer to Tibarn, the king of Phoenicis. Whereas Janaff specialized in eyesight, Ulki's gift was a heightened sense of hearing. He was more reserved than Janaff, and he also seemed to be somewhat friendlier. In Path of Radiance, he is first seen in "Chapter 13: A Guiding Wind", when he uses his hearing to eavesdrop on the conversations about a Begnion vessel. Later on, his hearing powers came in handy when they were tracking down Reyson in "Chapter 17: Dawn Breaks", as Ulki could hear the flapping of Reyson's wings. Along with Tibarn and Janaff, Ulki appeared as a reinforcement in the fourth part of the chapter to aid in the battle with Oliver.
After Reyson joined the Crimean Liberation Army in "Chapter 18: Crimea Marches", Tibarn sent Janaff and Ulki to join with the army as well so that they could help Reyson. After the war ended, Ulki returned to Tibarn's side and expressed his gratitude to Ike.
Three years later in Radiant Dawn, Janaff and Ulki fought under Tibarn as part of the Laguz Alliance Army. They were later sent to join with Ike's part of the army in order to protect Reyson in "Chapter 7: Rivals Collide" (although they pretended otherwise so that Reyson would not become angry). He and Ulki were recruited as playable characters if Ike spoke to either one during the chapter, or automatically at the start of the next chapter. Later on in the "Birds" conversation of "Chapter 5: Unforgivable Sin" in "Part 4: Of Gods and Men" (if Janaff and Ulki had been sent to the Hawk Army), arguing over which of them should take the Shriek skill given by Tibarn. Eventually Reyson took it and Tibarn offered to make Reyson his new aide, which made Janaff and Ulki apologize for their arguments and promise to talk over who would take the item.
At the end of the game, Ulki became Tibarn's left hand man after Tibarn became king of the unified bird nation, but Ulki still loved solitude and spent much of his free time in long-deserted locales.
Support Conversation Summaries[edit]
In Path of Radiance, Ulki is capable of having Support conversations with three other characters.
- Boyd- Ulki comes to Boyd's position after hearing Boyd mention him though his advanced hearing and mistakingly thinking that Boyd was calling him over. Boyd praises Ulki's precise hearing and also comments his interesting features. Ulki then mentions some of Boyd's body features that he appreciates and leaves, after which Boyd is confident that he will get along with the laguz. In the next conversation, Boyd meets up with Ulki and the two decide to call each other by name due to being friends. Boyd says he envies Ulki for being able to fly and having many advanced senses, and notices that they look somewhat like each other. However, Ulki calls himself the worst and leaves. In the final conversation, Ulki explains that he was suspicious of Boyd during their first conversation because Boyd was a beorc and Ulki feared Boyd was mocking him or luring him into a trap. He even performed a background check on Boyd. Boyd says that they must be very much alike, because he was very nervous during their conversation as well because he was afraid Ulki would hate him and claw his eyes out, while wishing he had Ike's ability to act natural around anyone. They decide to start trusting each other and declare themselves to truly be friends.
- Mordecai- In the first conversation, Mordecai asks Ulki what its like to fly, and Ulki says he doesn't really notice because he does it naturally. He then asks Ulki about Phoenicis. In the second conversation, Ulki tells Mordecai how his kind (with the exception of Janaff have poor eyesight in the darkness and how he wishes he could see around at night, while Mordecai says he has good night vision except in pure darkness. In the third conversation, Mordecai proposes a strategy in which he rides on Ulki so he could show Ulki the forest at night and experience the joys of flying at the same time. Ulki says he cannot support Mordecai's weight, but they could be able to make it work if Mordecai lost weight and Ulki got stronger. Mordecai swore to decrease his eating in order to lose weight, but Ulki nervously told him not to go overboard because it was just an idea.
- Rhys- Rhys meets with Ulki and is impressed by his abilities, saying he always thought that flying would be fantastic ever since the times he spent sick in bed. In the next conversation, Rhys raves about Ulki's flying abilities and how he wishes he could fly, saying it could help him in healing others faster. Ulki remains nervous and quick with his sentences, and offers to let Rhys ride him so that he could see what it was like to fly. In the the final conversation, Rhys is excited about how useful he could be riding Ulki in the next battle. But he then sees how tired and fatigued Ulki is from his transformations to animal form, and Ulki says he did not let on about his pain earlier because Rhys was so happy while flying with him. Rhys decides to call off the plan because it might be dangerous while Ulki is so tired, but Ulki also volunteers to treat Rhys to more flights in his free time.
Ulki also has inbuilt Support bonuses with Janaff and Reyson (which increase his chances of delivering a critical hit if one of them are nearby and vice-versa) and Tibarn (which protects Ulki from enemy critical hits when Tibarn is nearby).
In Radiant Dawn, Ulki has automatic Bond Supports with Janaff and Reyson.
Trivia[edit]
- He is five years younger than Janaff.
- Unused Support data from Path of Radiance indicates that Ulki was originally intended to also have support conversations with Reyson and Haar.
