Debut Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance

Rhys is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. He is the first healing unit in the game, but has a weak body which results him him often falling sick. He is also playable in the sequel, Radiant Dawn.

Background[edit]

Rhys originally lived in a small village with his parents. He was sickly even as a child and so did not often get to leave his house often to play with the other children. He often listened to his uncle's tall tales about the life of a mercenary and was enchanted by the life of a mercenary. When he grew up, Rhys found there were few jobs for him in his village due to his frail body. However, his life changed one day, about a year prior to Path of Radiance, when the Greil Mercenaries fought off a group of bandits not far from Rhys's village. Rhys had ventured further into the forest than usual because he was shot on medicinal herbs, and found Titania after she had fallen from her steed and was bleeding. Rhys was able to take her back to his home and treated her back to health. Rhys wanted to join with the mercenaries, and Titania was able to talk Greil into admitting him into the group as a healer. His parents agreed to this because they thought a strong mercenary group would protect their son, and Rhys sent most of his earnings back to his parents as their only source of income.

He was first seen in "Chapter 2: Rescue", when he was recovering from his latest fever. Mist and Rolf had been captured by bandits, so Ike and Boyd set out to rescue them without Titania's permission. Rhys reluctantly accompanied them after failing to prevent them from leaving. The mission was successful, but all of them were later scolded by Greil and Titania. Rhys became permanently playable in "Chapter 4: Roadside Battle". Rhys later assured Ike of his abilities when Ike lead them on a scouting mission and said he considered Ike to be Greil's equal in most ways. When the mercenaries had to decide whether or not to help Princess Elincia in "Chapter 5: Flight!", Rhys said that it was not a question of whether or not she was a princess, and that they should help anyone in need. Elincia later entrusted him with a Mend staff. He also taught Mist how to use healing magic. After Greil's death, he also approved of Ike commanding the Greil Mercenaries and also prayed for Greil.

After the war ended, Rhys was glad to return to a life without war and thanked the goddess.

Three years later, Rhys was with the mercenaries when they returned from hiding to rescue Lucia from being hanged at the end of "Part 2: Of Countries and Kings". Rhys was able to heal Lucia while the others fought off the Crimean rebels. He then accompanied the mercenaries in their joining with the Laguz Alliance Army in "Part 3: Intersecting Vows". He appeared in the "Challenging" conversation of "Chapter 1: Beorc and Laguz", when Mia brought him over when she battled Ike so that he could heal her immediately if Ike seriously wounded her. Rhys said he preferred to see how the injury happened rather than what happened in the past, with those injured in sparring simply showing up and bleeding on the floor.

After the war, Rhys worked as a healer and opened a small chapel within the old mercenary fort, where he also taught school..

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

In Path of Radiance, Rhys is capable of having Support conversations with five other characters.

  • Kieran- Rhys is disturbed to see Kieran bleeding and learns that Kieran often hurts himself accidentally during training and doesn't notice, no matter how large the gash. Kieran describes his harsh training regimen, but that makes Rhys lightheaded. In the second conversation, Rhys decided to watch Kieran train in order to heal him in case of another accident, but Kieran makes the mistake of juggling weapons. In the final conversation, Rhys convinces Kieran to stop his dangerous training by telling Kieran that if he accidentally died in training, he'd be remembered for dying during his training rather than his more proud feats. Kieran agrees to take it easier, but he then forgets the advice when he spots a bear and decides to approach it.
  • Mia- Mia runs into Rhys and gives him a weapon to battle her with. However, she is disappointed to find that Rhys has no idea how to use a sword. Mia says that a fortune teller had told her that she'd meet her one true foe and that he'd be wearing white robes. Rhys offers to hold the sword up and let her hit it a few times if it makes her feel any better, but Mia decides to give up so she doesn't hurt Rhys. In the second conversation, Mia asks Rhys if he wants to train with her, telling him that he has the potential to become a legendary swordsman and her one true foe. In the third conversation, Mia's training of Rhys comes to a halt when he is gripped by cramps and fever. Mia is about to give up on the fortune teller's prophecy when she remembers an overlooked detail about her fortune, which led her to believe that her one true foe was a mounted unit. She then begins pressuring Rhys to take horse-riding lessons and fight alongside her. This time she instead called Rhys the man of her destiny, much to his confusion.
  • Rolf- In the first conversation, Rolf is glad to see Rhys. Rolf notes that Rhys has been in battle all the time and remembers back when Rhys was often sick in the fort for days, and often alone with Rolf and Mist while the others were on missions. Rolf is glad they can fight together now, but he gets nervous when Rhys says they should be thinking positively and he runs off. In the next conversation, Rolf finds that Rhys is sick and trying to hide his sickness in the battle. Rhys talks about his wishes to be strong, and then they both mention several impossible or improbable yet optimistic wishes. Rolf decides to have Ike position Rhys near Rolf so Rolf could at least protect him. In the final conversation, Rhys considers leaving the mercenaries because of the burden he always is, but Rolf asks him to stay. Rolf admits that he was terribly afraid of combat and almost wet himself, but he could forget his fear when he was defending Rhys, which would also help Rolf to become stronger. Rhys tells Rolf he has matured and agrees to stay with the mercenaries, not keep his illnesses secret and count on Rolf to protect him. Rolf then asks Rhys not to tell anyone he almost wet himself.
  • Titania- Titania makes sure Rhys is in good health and then recalls how they first met each other, noting that it was almost exactly a year ago when it happened. She is surprised to hear that even Shinon seemed concerned after her injury and thanks Rhys for healing it so she could continue fighting. Rhys thanks her for convincing Greil to hire him so he could contribute money to his parents. In the second conversation, Rhys comes across Titania while she's training and asks if he can join in on the training. He wants to learn how to fight and defend himself so he can be more useful to the mercenaries, but Titania tells him that its not his fault because he's a healer and not a fighter and she wonders if Rhys would have been happier if they left him to live in his village. But Rhys replies that his village bored him to tears and he loved living as a mercenary. Titania was glad to hear this. In the third conversation, Rhys joined in on Titania's training again. This time they discussed Ike and their concerns regarding him. They ultimately agree that Ike is very much like Greil and will pick the right path without Titania telling him. All they had to do was believe in Ike and follow him to the end.
  • Ulki- Rhys meets with Ulki and is impressed by his abilities, saying he always thought that flying would be fantastic ever since the times he spent sick in bed. In the next conversation, Rhys raves about Ulki's flying abilities and how he wishes he could fly, saying it could help him in healing others faster. Ulki remains nervous and quick with his sentences, and offers to let Rhys ride him so that he could see what it was like to fly. In the the final conversation, Rhys is excited about how useful he could be riding Ulki in the next battle. But he then sees how tired and fatigued Ulki is from his transformations to animal form, and Ulki says he did not let on about his pain earlier because Rhys was so happy while flying with him. Rhys decides to call off the plan because it might be dangerous while Ulki is so tired, but Ulki also volunteers to treat Rhys to more flights in his free time.

In '"Radiant Dawn, Rhys has an automatic Bond Support with Titania.
