Volug is a playable unit in Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn and the first playable laguz unit in the game.
Background[edit]
Volug was a wolf laguz in service to Queen Nailah. He was "reticent in the extreme" and rarely spoke. Although he could hear and comprehend the modern speech, he was only able to fluently speak in the ancient tongue. Volug was also able to remain in his beast form continuously by halfshifting. But as this transformation brought Volug to a transitional form between man and beast, he was less stronger than he would be if he had undergone a full laguz transformation.
Volug was first seen accompanying Queen Nailah and Rafiel in the Desert of Death at the end of "Chapter 4: A Hidden Voice" of "Part 1: Silver-Haired Maiden". Afterwards in a Base Conversation of "Chapter 5: The Lost Heir", Nailah had Volug half-shift and sent him to accompany Micaiah, since it would not be wise for Micaiah to travel with laguz, and Volug could pass for a dog in his halfshifted form. Volug joined Micaiah in all of her following battles except for "Chapter 9: One Remains". He also made a return trip to the ruins in the Desert of Death simply to find a Blue Gem for Micaiah, which he gave to her in a Base Conversation of "Endgame: Daein, Arise!". After Nailah and Rafiel left Daein, they left Volug behind to continue serving as a bodyguard for Micaiah.
Volug later joined Micaiah and the Daein Royal Army in their battles in "Part 3: Intersecting Vows". In "Part 4: Of Gods and Men", if Volug traveled with the Greil Army, he would be featured in the "Wolves" Base Conversation of "Chapter 4: Revelations". He delivered an elixir to Ike and then conversed with Nailah in the ancient language, at which point she and Ike entered a discussion about the two different languages, which Nailah used to support her encouraging Volug to learn the modern speech of Tellius. Ike volunteered to teach Volug the modern speech if he also taught him the ancient speech at the same time to narrow the language gap.
After the wars ended, he returned to Hatari. He remained in wolf form for his journey home, claiming that he felt more comfortable in that form. If Nailah was killed during the game, Volug returned to Hatari in her place to tell the people about the great war and Nailah's hopes, while planning to migrate the nation across the desert.
