Mario Party 4 is the fourth installment of the Mario Party series and the first Mario Party game on the Nintendo Gamecube.
Story
The mysterious Party Cube has landed in the Mushroom Kingdom. It is the birthday of whichever character the player chooses. Four board game hosts (a Goomba, a Boo, a Koopa Troopa and a Toad) who arrive on the Party Cube offer presents to the birthday boy (or girl) but first they must earn them by winning board game challenges.
Gameplay
The main game mode is based on board games. Players compete to see who can win the most coins and Stars, coins being earned from spaces and by winning minigames, while Stars are purchased with the coins from special characters. Minigames are held at the end of each turn with coins as prizes. The gameplay is mostly similar, except for the addition of a system based around Mini and Mega Mushrooms.
Like the previous game, the game has a single player Story Mode which is separate from the Party Mode (where the players can choose whichever board they want and have multiplayer games). The Duel Mode from the previous game has been dropped, however. There is also now a separate Mini-Game Mode for playing unlocked minigames and an Extra Room which contains exclusive minigames. Finally there is a Present Room where players can view presents earned from Story Mode.
