Aerodactyl is one of the first Fossil Pokémon to be introduced in the first generation games.

Information

Aerodactyl was a vicious and savage Pokémon that lived during ancient times, the age of the dinosaurs. It flew freely and fearlessly in ancient skies by spreading its wings and gliding while shrieking high-pitched cries. It was ferocious and would attack its enemy's throat with its serrated, saw-like fangs. It is imagined to have been the king of the skies.

Although it died out during prehistoric times, scientists have been able to resurrect it in modern times using DNA found in Old Amber.

Aerodactyl could be revived from Old Amber in Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed, LeafGreen, Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold and SoulSilver. It could be revived at the Cinnabar Island lab in the first generation games and FireRed/LeafGreen, the Oreburgh Museum in the fourth generation games and the Pewter City museum in HeartGold/SoulSilver. As for the Old Amber, in the first generation games and FireRed/LeafGreen, it was given to the player by a scientist in the Pewter City museum; in the fourth generation games, it could randomly be found in the Underground; and in HeartGold/SoulSilver, there was a random chance of finding it by smashing rocks.

In Gold, Silver and Crystal, a trainer on Route 14 would trade an Aerodactyl to the player for a Chansey.

In Pokémon Pinball, Aerodactyl could be found at Cinnabar Island. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, they could randomly be found on the Ruby Field, and once an egg hatched, an Aerodactyl would fly by and replace it the next time the ball rolled into an Egg Stand. In Pokémon Trozei!, it could be found at Endless Level 4, Forever Level 53, Pair Trozei and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Aerodactyl was found at the twenty-first through twenty-fifth floors of Sky Tower, the first eight floors of Sky Tower Summit, the fifteenth through twenty-fifth floors of Pitfall Valley and the ninetieth through ninety-ninth floors of Joyous Tower.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Aerodactyl could be found at the eighth through fourteenth floors of Mt. Horn and the first nine floors of Mt. Mistral. In Pokémon Ranger, it was found at Fiore Temple, and in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Peril Cliffs. Aerodactyl could also be obtained through a random trade with Hayley in My Pokémon Ranch, from which it could be transferred to the fourth generation Pokémon games. In Pokémon Rumble, Aerodactyl could be found at Windy Prairie.

• It was featured in one Kanto episodes where Ash and his friends stumbled upon the secret resting underground resting place of Pokémon believed extinct, including Aerodactyl as well as Kabuto, Kabutops, Omanyte and Omastar. The Aerodactyl flew off with Ash, but Ash's Charizard was able to save him. In the fourth Pokémon movie, an Aerodactyl was revived as a follower of the film's antagonists, but they were defeated. A Pokémon Chronicles episode involved Gary reviving an Aerodactyl and then protecting it from Team Rocket agents, and later on a Sinnoh episode involved Ash and friends trying to stop a newly resurrected Aerodactyl that was going on a rampage in Oreburgh, and ultimately they were able to weaken it so that it could be caught by the scientist.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Red revived An Aerodactyl from Old Amber that Giovanni gave him during the Red/Blue/Green arc. It has served as a main member of Red's team, and he often uses it as a form of transportation.

Trivia

• It is based on the real extinct animal, the pterodactyl; its name is a combination of "pterodactyl" with "aero", representing its association with the air.
