Voltorb are usually found in power plants. They are easily confused for Poké Balls and sometimes camouflage themselves as such. It was discovered around the time Poké Balls were invented and was first seen at a Poké Ball company, so it is believed that there is some connection. Studies by scientists how that it has components that are not found in nature. One rumor says that Voltorb was created when a Poké Ball was exposed to a powerful pulse of energy.
They move by rolling around. They are very sensitive and have been known to self-destruct with the slightest touch, although they will also zap or screech at those that bother it. Its explosive nature causes veteran trainers to approach it with caution. Voltorb evolves into Electrode at Level 30.

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen, Voltorb could be found at Route 10 and Power Plant, while in Yellow they only appeared at the Power Plant. In these games, Voltorb were sometimes disguised as items, and battles with them are triggered if the player tries to grab them.
In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, they appeared at Route 10, one could also be obtained by trading a Krabby to a trainer at Olivine City. At the Rocket HQ in Mahogany Town, six Voltorb with a tendency to self-destrucy appeared as traps. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Voltorb were also found at Safari Zone's Swamp area (when enough Rock objects were placed). They could also be caught at the Town Outskirts course of the Pokéwalker, from which they could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.
