Ivysaur is a flower-backed reptilian Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the middle form of Bulbasaur's evolutionary line and evolves into Venusaur.

Information

Ivysaur evolves from a Bulbasaur at level 16. The transition enlarges the bulb on its back, which begins to sprout into a flower bud. This changes the Ivysaur to a quadruped, as it is lacks the ability to stand on its hind legs like in its previous evolution. The bud on its back gives off an aroma as it prepares to fully blossom. Ivysaur will often lie in the sun absorbing energy from the sun to build its strength and to grow the bud on its back. Once the bud blossoms into a flower, it will evolve into a Venusaur at level 32.

The Ivysaur is notable for being the only one of the three second evolution starters that evolves first (Charmeleon and Wartortle evolve at level 36). However, with all evolutions this means it takes longer to learn certain moves that Ivysaur can learn earlier without evolving.

Brawl

Within Super Smash Bros. Brawl], Ivysaur has a variety of moves based on its moves from the games. Since it moves on all fours, it primarily attacks with its vines and projectiles.

• Standard Special Move: Bullet Seed - Ivysaur fires seeds rapidly from its bulb into the air above it.
• Side Special Move: Razor Leaf - Ivysaur fires leaves at its opponent.
• Up Special Move: Vine Whip - Bulbsaur extends its vines, which can hit enemies or grab onto ledges if Ivysaur is falling.
• Down Special Move: Pokémon Switch - This is not an actual move; this causes the Pokémon Trainer to withdraw Ivysaur and replace it with the next Pokémon, Charizard.
• Final Smash: Triple Finish - All three of the Pokémon attack using their most powerful attacks at the same time. The move Ivysaur uses is Solarbeam. This can only be used when one of the three Pokémon uses a Smash Ball.

Ivysaur is not obtainable in any game, but can be evolved from the Bulbasaur that is one of three optional starter Pokémon offered by Professor Oak in the Red, Green, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen versions or the one given away in the Pokémon: Yellow Version.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, Ivysaur can be obtained through evolution. Ivysaur also appears in Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Ivysaur can be found in Secret Storage 2 or Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Ivysaur is encountered in the nineteenth through twenty-seventh floors of Western Cave. In Pokémon Ranger, Ivysaur is encountered in Lyra Forest and Kisara Plains. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, Ivysaur can be found in the the first thirteen basement floors of Mystifying Forest and the first twenty-nine basement floors of Mystery Jungle. Ivysaur also appeared in Pokémon Rumble, where it was found in Silent Forest. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Ivysaur could be caught at Hinder Cape and Forest Temple.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Ivysaur has been included as a playable character, as part of a three-Pokémon team with Squirtle and Charizard which the Pokémon Trainer can switch between. Ivysaur initially appeared in this role in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and returned in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, after having been left out of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U in favor of making Charizard a solo fighter. Ivysaur attacks with a variety of moves from the games and can use vines for a recovery tether. All three of the Pokémon attack together for their Final Smash, known as Triple Finish, in which Ivysaur contributes Solar Beam.
  • Throughout the series, Ivysaur has also been represented by two trophies (one being for the three Pokémon's Triple Finish) and a sticker in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game and a Fighter Spirit in Ultimate. The Brawl trophy was gained from Ivysaur delivering the final blow in Classic Mode, while ll three of the Pokémon team's Fighter Spirits in Ultimate were unlocked at the same time upon Pokémon Trainer's completion of Classic Mode.
  • Within "The Subspace Emissary" in Brawl, Ivysaur was one of the two missing Pokémon sought by the Pokémon Trainer. The Ivysaur was ultimately found in the middle of the ruins in trophy form, where the Pokémon Trainer immediately caught it, at which point Ivysaur became playable in that mode.

In Other Media

• Ivysaur has made several brief appearances in the Pokémon anime.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Red's Bulbasaur evolved into an Ivysaur when in battle with a Primeape near Celadon City. It remained an Ivysaur for a majority of the arc until evolving during a battle with the fused form of Articuno, Zapdos and Moltres later on.

Trivia

• Its name is a simple combination of "ivy" (a type of flora, reflecting its grass-type nature) and "saur" (which means lizard and is the shared suffix of this evolutionary family).
