Slowpoke is a Psychic Pokémon introduced in the first generation Pokémon games. It initially could only evolve into the Pokémon Slowbro, but the second generation games introduced the alternate evolution Slowking.

Information

Slowpoke is a pink Pokémon known for being unusually slow and dopey. It lolls about in a daze most of the time without worrying about the time except when it is fishing with its tail. There is little difference between it when awake or asleep. It takes five seconds for it to feel pain when under attack. A Slowpoke's tail leaks a sweet sap from its tail, making the tail pleasant to chew on. Due to their slowed reflexes, it will usually take Slowpoke a whole day to react to something biting their tail.

It spends most of its time lazing near water. Although it places its tail in water to catch prey, it will often forget what it was trying to do eventually. Slowpoke often seems to be vacantly lost in thought, but no one knows what it is thinking about. Poachers have been known to cut off and sell Slowpoke Tails as novelty items (particularly Team Rocket in the second generation games), but it has also been said that Slowpoke can regrow their tails. Areas such as Azalea Town hold Slowpoke in prominence due to believing that their yawns summon rain, and that this ended a drought 400 years ago.

A Slowpoke evolves at the time that a Shellder bites its tail, but what it evolves into depends on the method. At Level 37, Slowpoke evolves into Slowbro. Alternately, it will evolve into Slowking when it is traded while holding the King's Rock. As Slowbro, Slowpoke has a Shellder latched onto its tail in a symbiotic relationship. It is said that a Slowbro reverts into a Slowpoke when it loses its tail, but this is never demonstrated in-game. The Slowking is alternately an enlightened Slowpoke with a Shellder attached to its head, and similarly it is said to lose its superintelligence if it loses the Shellder cap.

In Red, Blue, Yellow, and LeafGreen, Slowpoke could be found at the Seafoam Islands. In Red and Blue, it could be found by fishing with the Super Rod (as well as surfing in LeafGreen) at Celadon City, Route 10 and the Safari Zone's entrance. In Yellow and LeafGreen, it could also be found by surfing at Routes 12 and 13. In LeafGreen, it was additionally found at Routes 4, 11, 14, 19, 20, 21, 24 and 25, Fuchsia City, Vermilion City, Viridian City, the other areas of the Safari Zone and all areas of the Sevii Islands through the Super Rod, surfing and often walking in the wild as well.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, Slowpoke could be found at Slowpoke Well and Tohjo Falls. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Slowpoke could be found at the Safari Zone's Rocky Beach Area. It could also be found at the Pokéwalker's Beautiful Beach course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold or SoulSilver.

In Pearl and Platinum, Slowpoke could be found at Route 205 when using the Pokéradar. They could also be found in Pokémon: Black and White Versions by surfing at the Abundant Shrine.

Other Games

Slowpoke could be obtained at the Rock Mountain area in Pokémon Pinball, and it was also part of the Blue Table that could be hit to trigger Pokémon evolution. In Pokémon Snap, Slowpoke could be found at the River area. In Hey You, Pikachu!, a Slowpoke cold be seen sunbathing on Cobalt Island's beach during the Treasure Hunt missions. It was received from Professor Oak in Pokémon Channel, and the game also featured a Slowpoke Weather Channel.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Slowpoke was found in Secret Storage 7, Huge Storage 2, Endless Level 20 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Slowpoke could be found at the eleventh through nineteenth floors of Stormy Sea, the sixth through fourteenth floors of Silver Trench, Grand Sea and Far-Off Sea, and the sixth through fourteenth basement floors of Marvelous Sea and Fabulous Strait. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, Slowpoke could be found at the first twenty-four basement floors of Lake Afar. In the latter game, a non-playable Slowpoke and a Slakoth make up Team Slacker, a zero-motivation exploration team.

In Pokémon Ranger, Slowpoke could be found at Kisara Plains, and a Slowpoke was also Murph's partner Pokémon. Slowpoke also appeared in Pokémon Rumble, where they could be found at the Rocky Cave. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, Slowpoke appeared at Beach Zone.

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, a float of Slowpoke appears as one of the many floats in the Poké Floats level of Super Smash Bros. Melee, and Slowpoke also appears in the Adventure Mode of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a Master Spirit. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Slowpoke's Spirit would possess Luigi in a battle where all players' movement speeds are reduced, and where left and right controls would periodically reverse. After being defeated, Slowpoke's Spirit would inhabit a nearby dojo and teach "Forgetful Style", which involves making Spirits forget styles that were learned from the game's other dojos.

Other Media

• Slowpoke was first featured in a Kanto episode of the Pokémon anime wherein a professor researched the reasons behind Slowpoke's evolution to Slowbro. There were two separate episodes showing group that worshiped Slowpoke (one of which was the Azalea Town group). One episode also featured a group of Slowpoke traveling to reach a King's Rock, with one eventually succeeding and evolving.
• They were featured within chapters of the Pokémon Adventures manga, particularly in the Gold/Silver arc where they were saved from Team Rocket at Azalea Town, with one of them filling the well by yawning.
