Electrode is a large ball-shaped Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the evolved form of Voltorb.

Information

Electrode evolves from Voltorb at Level 30. Its body stores electrical energy at very high pressure, and because of this it is known to explode with little or no provocation. Electrode have even been known to amuse themselves by exploding when they find themselves bored. As it charges up energy, an Electrode becomes faster but also becomes more likely to explode. They eat electricity in the atmosphere, and large amounts of Electrode explosions are usually expected on days with lightning strikes.

They are attracted to electricity, which causes problems when they congregate at power plants, with the end result often being massive or chaotic blackouts in nearby cities. Electrode have also been known to drift on winds when bloated with electrical energy. Due to their explosive tendencies, they have earned the nickname "The Bomb Ball", and they are also used for traps by organizations such as Team Rocket.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, FireRed and LeafGreen, Electrode uncommonly appeared at the Cerulean Cave, and the player could also trade a Raichu to a trainer at Cinnabar Island for one. In all of these games as well as Yellow, two Electrode that appeared to be items were present at the Power Plant.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, six Electrode appear within the Team Rocket HQ in Mahogany Town where they power Team Rocket's generator. The player only gets to battle three of them while Lance battles the other three, and it is required to defeat or capture all three of them to progress onwards. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, they also appeared normally at Cerulean Cave.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Electrode could be rarely found at New Mauville, and two Electrode disguised as items appeared at Aqua (or Magma in Ruby) Hideout.

Other Games

Electrode could only be obtained through evolving a Voltorb in Pokémon Pinball, Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams. In Pokémon Snap, Electrode could be photographed at the Tunnel and could Selfdestruct if hit with an item. In Pokémon Trozei!, Electrode appeared at Secret Storage 15 and Mr. Who's Den.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Electrode could be recruited at the sixteenth through twenty-ninth floors of Concealed Ruins and the first twenty-nine basement floors of World Abyss. Electrode was found at Altru Building in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Layuda Island and Thunder Temple. Electrode also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Fiery Furnace. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, Electrode appeared at Haunted Zone.

Video Games

• Electrode has appeared in all games of the Super Smash Bros. series, where it explodes and in many instances can KO nearby fighters. In the original Super Smash Bros., it was among the Pokémon that could appear at random from the Silph Co. elevator in the Saffron City stage. From Super Smash Bros. Melee onwards, it became one of the Pokémon that could be randomly summoned using the Poké Ball item. In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, it could appear both from a Poké Ball and at Saffron City.
  • Electrode has also been represented by a trophy in Melee, a trophy and a sticker in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game and an Advanced-rank Support Spirit (with the effect of starting a battle equipped with a Bomber) in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle in the latter game, Electrode's Spirit would possess Pac-Man in a battle where explosive items appeared commonly, and bob-ombs would periodically rain down from the sky.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Electrode have made mostly minor appearances throughout the series, which usually involve them exploding. One episode during the Orange Islands season featured a town plagued by an Electrode infestation. A Diglett rancher named Poncho tried to round them up, although Team Rocket tried catching them instead by forcing them to explode so that they would be easy to capture. Poncho wound up being successful in relocating them himself after Team Rocket was defeated again.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Electrode was shown as one of Lieutenant Surge's Pokémon, and at one point he was even shown to have a cannon that fired Electrode. During the Crystal arc, Eusine had an Electrode that he rode as transportation, and in addition to rolling it was shown to be capable of floating in the air through electricity.

Trivia

• An electrode is the name of a device which an electric current passes through. Interestingly, its name can also be seen as a combination of "electric" and "explode".
• Its colors are flipped from Voltorb's so that the upper portion is white and the bottom portion is red.
