Moltres is one of the three legendary bird Pokémon featured in the first generation Pokémon games which resembles a flaming bird.

Information

Moltres is the legendary bird of fire known for its flaming wings and ability to control fire. It can flap its wings to scatter embers and produce a dazzling flash of flames, which can turn the night sky red. It is said to migrate from the south along with the spring, and its appearance indicates the coming of spring. It is even said to bring early spring to the wintry lands it visits. If injured, Moltres is said to heal itself by dipping into a volcano.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon Red, Green, Blue and Yellow versions, Moltres is found within Victory Road, and is the last of the legendary bird Pokémon that can be found. In Pokémon: FireRed and LeafGreen Versions, it is instead found at the summit of Mt. Ember on the Knot Island, being the only legendary Pokémon in the game with an altered location. Moltres can also be found within Mt. Silver in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

In Pokémon: Platinum Version, Moltres and the other two legendary birds can be found randomly roaming throughout Sinnoh after the player obtains the National Dex.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, Moltres can be caught in Indigo Plateau. In Pokémon Snap, Moltres is encased within an egg in the Volcano area. Knocking the egg into the lava will cause the Moltres to emerge from the egg, at which point it can be photographed. Moltres also appears in Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2. Moltres also appears in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, where a Shadow version of Moltres can be snagged from Cipher Boss Greevil on Citadark Isle. After being purified, the Moltres can then be traded to any of the third generation color versions.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Moltres can be found from random agent cards or in Mr. Who's Den. Moltres is found in the peak of Mt. Blaze in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon as well as in the Final Maze in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, it appears on the tenth floor of Giant Volcano if the player had the Mystery Part or Secret Slab. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Faldera Island. Moltres also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Fiery Furnace.

Video Games

• Moltres has been present throughout the Super Smash Bros. series in some form. It initially made a cameo appearance in the original Super Smash Bros., where it could sometimes be seen flying in the background of the Saffron City stage, and it could be seen again with the stage's return in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Then, starting in Super Smash Bros. Melee, it has had a recurring appearance as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item, and it was the only one of the original three legendary birds to keep appearing as a Poké Ball Pokémon beyond Melee. When summoned from a Poké Ball, Moltres would merely float in the center of the screen, causing damage to anyone who touches its fiery body, before flying away. It could potentially cause one-hit KOs in its first two appearances.
  • Moltres has also been represented by a trophy in Melee, a trophy and sticker in Brawl, a trophy in the 3DS/Wii U game and as part of a Legend-rank Primary Spirit that was shared with Articuno and Zapdos in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, the Spirit of the three legendary birds would possess three duplicates of Lucas with enhanced PSI power (as he had PSI abilities that matched each of their respective elements), and the battle would start with the Poké Ball version of Moltres being unleashed.

In Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime series, Moltres first makes a small appearance at the opening of the tournament of the Indigo Plateau, where it appears from the flames of the Indigo Plateau's torch and attacks Team Rocket. It also appears in the second Pokémon movie with the other two legendary birds, where they are captured by Lawrence III. This leads the three to battle after being freed in a battle that would destroy the world until Ash and the others restore balance, and the three birds fall into rank behind Lugia. Moltres was additionally featured in an episode of Pokémon Chronicles, where the trainer Silver obsessed over catching Moltres on Knot Island.
• Moltres appears in the Pokémon Adventures manga. When it is first seen in the Red/Green/Blue arc, Team Rocket had already captured it and deployed it to pursue Red and Blaine on Cinnabar Island. Red is able to wound it with his new Aerodactyl, causing them to retreat. Later on the three birds are fused together with Team Rocket's fusion machine powered by the eight gym badges, but they are split apart and freed after being defeated by a combined attack from Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise. The three birds later appear in the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc, where Green captures them all to overcome her fear of birds and uses them to fight off Ho-Oh and Lugia, setting them free afterwards.

Trivia

• Moltres's name is derived from a combination of "molten" and "tres" (the Spanish word for "three", due to it being the third of the legendary birds).
