Charizard is a winged-dragon like fire-breathing Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the third and ultimate form in Charmander's evolutionary mode. It was featured as the version mascot for the Red Version and the remake, FireRed.

Information

Charizard is a powerful flame Pokémon that evolves from a Charmeleon at Level 36. In this evolutionary process, Charizard becomes larger and more mature than it was in its early Charmander stage. Most notably Charizard also grows wings in this stage and becomes capable of flight. This gives the Pokémon a generally dragon-liken appearance, although it is not classified as a dragon-type Pokémon (although it can learn some Dragon-type moves in later games, and the dragon trainer Lance once had a Charizard in his team).

Charizard's flames are reportedly hot enough to melt nearly any material, although they still retain their weakness against rock-type Pokémon. They have been known to accidentally cause forest fires as well. The flame on Charizard's tail will also burn intensely and even turn a whitish-blue color when it is angered. Charizard apparently spends most of its time flying through the sky in search of strong opponents (and can fly at an altitude of about 4,600 feet), and will not purposely attack weaker opponents.

Charizard have yet to be found in the wild and can only be obtained by evolving a Charmeleon. The dragon trainer Lance had a Charizard in his team during the championship battle of Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal. In the same games, Red also has a Charizard in his team (as Red had the evolved forms of all of the starter Pokémon from the first generation games).

Super Smash Bros.

Charizard has the following special moveset in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U:

• Standard Special Move: Flamethrower - Charizard breathes a steady stream of fire towards its opponents.
• Side Special Move: Rock Smash - Charizard produces a rock and smashes it with its head, knocking over any opponent that it makes contact with. In the 3DS/Wii U game, this is changed to being a Down Special Move, and Flare Blitz becomes the new Side Special Move.
• Side Special Move: Flare Blitz - This is added in the 3DS/Wii U games due to the Pokemon Trainer being removed. This move involves Charizard surrounding itself in flames and charging forward, tackling through opponents, but it also comes with recoil.
• Up Special Move: Fly - Charizard swerves upward into the air with its wings, harming any opponent that gets in its way. Charizard can also naturally glide through the air.
• Down Special Move: Pokémon Switch - This is not an actual move; rather the Pokémon Trainer will at this point switch out Charizard for the next available Pokémon, Squirtle. In the 3DS/Wii U version, this move is removed with the Pokémon Trainer; Rock Smash replaces it as the Down Special Move.
• Final Smash: Triple Finish - Brawl only. The three Pokémon come out at the same time and use their most powerful moves at the same time. Charizard uses Fire Blast. This move can only be used with a Smash Ball.
• Final Smash: Mega Charizard X - 3DS/Wii U versions only. With the use of a Smash Ball, Charizard temporarily undergoes a Mega Evolution. This form can attack just by spinning around or spitting fire. It is very powerful, but Charizard can still be damaged in this form.

Other Games

Charizard can also be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball. In Pokémon Snap, it is possible to evolve a Charmeleon located in the Volcano area by using a Pester Ball to knock it into a lava pool. This will cause a flash, and the Charmeleon emerges from the lava as Charizard. Within the Pokémon e-Reader games, Charizard makes a cameo appearance flying through the sky in the beginning of the Metronome short.

In Pokémon Trozei! it can be trozeied in Endless Levels 23 and 49, and Forever Level 72 as well as in Pair Trozei. Charizard can only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, although several non-playable Charizard appear throughout the game, including one that is a member of the Gold rank rescue team Team A.C.T.. It is also possible to capture several Charizard in some missions of Pokémon Ranger at the Jungle Relic and Sekra Mountain Range areas. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Charizard could be found in the first fifteen basement floors of Spacial Rift, the first nine basement floors of Deep Spacial Rift and the sixth through fourteenth basement floors of Dark Crater Pit.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Charizard can only be found in the Volcano Cave, while in Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it can be obtained at Rand's House. In Pokémon Rumble, it appears at Fiery Furnace.

• Charizard appears throughout the Super Smash Bros. series. Initially appearing in Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from a Pokéball, Charizard became a playable fighter starting in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In Brawl and Ultimate, Charizard was one of three Pokémon that Pokemon Trainer could switch between in battle (the other two being Ivysaur and Squirtle). In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U, Charizard was instead a standalone playable fighter, with Pokemon Trainer and the other two Pokémon being absent from that installment. As part of the Pokémon team, Charizard contributes the Fire Blast move to their Final Smash, the Triple Finish. As a solo fighter, Charizard's Final Smash was a Mega Evolution into Mega Charizard.
  • During its appearances as a Poké Ball summon, Charizard attacked with Flamethrower, torching enemies to the left and right as it swiveled its head from side to side.
  • Charizard has also been represented by a trophy in Melee, two trophies (one being of the Triple Finish) and a sticker in Brawl, two trophies (plus a trophy for its Final Smash/Mega Evolution in the Wii U version) in the 3DS/Wii U game and a Fighter Spirit as well as a Spirit of Mega Charizard X in Ultimate. The Brawl trophy was gained by Charizard delivering the final blow in Classic Mode, while in Ultimate', the three Fighter Spirits of the Pokémon team could be unlocked together upon the Pokémon Trainer's completion of Classic Mode.
  • Within "The Subspace Emissary", the Adventure Mode of Brawl, Charizard was one of Red's two Pokémon who went missing. However, it seemed that Charizard did not want to be recaptured, as it flew away from Red and into the Ruins. After being found by Red and Lucas, Charizard must be defeated in battle. Red then caught Charizard in a Pokéball, at which point Charizard became playable in that mode.
• In Super Mario Maker, Charizard appears as a potential Mystery Mushroom costume that Mario can transform into it. It can be unlocked by completing a 100 Mario Challenge on Normal or higher, or by scanning an amiibo of Charizard.

In Other Media

• A Charizard appeared in the Pokémon anime, where it was the final evolution of Ash's Charmander. However the Charmander had turned rebellious after evolving into Charmeleon and only grew more disobedient as Charizard. Ash's Charizard spent lots of time taking naps, ignoring Ash's orders and sometimes torching Ash with Flamethrower. Although Charizard came through for Ash several times, it caused Ash to lose the Indigo League tournament when it fell asleep during Ash's final battle with Richie. Ash later let Charizard go to live with more of its kind in the Charrific Valley, but it has returned to aid Ash on several occasions.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Blue's Charmeleon evolves into a Charizard by the time of the battles with Team Rocket in Saffron City. Charizard remains as one of the main members of Blue's team in later arcs, being briefly lent to Red during Gold/Silver/Crystal and learning the ultimate Fire-type attack Blast Burn during the FireRed/LeafGreen arc. A Charizard also appears in the Emerald arc as one of Tucker's main Pokémon.

Trivia

• Its name is derived from a combination of the English word "char" (meaning to burn something, in association with Charizard's type) and "lizard" (the species Charizard resembles).
