Lyndis (more commonly called Lyn) is one of the three main characters of Fire Emblem. She is the only main character who is playable in Lyn's Tale (the first ten chapters). Afterwards she is also playable in both Eliwood's Tale and Hector's Tale.

Background[edit]

Her father was Hassar, the chieftain of the Lorca Tribe, and her mother was Lady Madelyn, daughter of the Marquess of Caelin, Lord Hausen. The marquess had disapproved of Madelyn's romance with the nomad chieftain, causing Madelyn to elope with him and leave Caelin for the Sacae Plains. One year later, their daughter was born and named Lyndis after Marquess Caelin's deceased wife. However, her parents only called her Lyndis in private conversations to avoid suspicion, and publicly she was only called "Lyn".

Lyn grew up among the Lorca and became skilled with a sword. She also made several friends, including Florina, the Ilian Pegasus Knight-in-training. However, when Lyn was eighteen years old, the Lorca were massacred by Taliver bandits. First they poisoned the Lorca's drinking water the night before, and then they attacked while the Lorca were weakened. Lyn's parents were among the casualties, and Lyn was one of the few survivors, her father having placed her on a horse in his dying moments and sent the horse off. Lyn found the remaining Lorca would not accept her as a leader, because she was a woman, and the Lorca had old-fashioned beliefs. Lyn spent the next six months training so that she could exact revenge on the bandits. In the game's prologue, "A Girl From the Plains", Lyn meets a young traveling apprentice tactician named Mark. They worked together to defeat Batta the Beast, and afterwards Lyn convinced Mark to let her travel with him, so that he could help with her training.

In "Chapter One: Footsteps of Fate", Lyn met with the knights Kent and Sain in Bulgar. They hailed from Caelin, and had come in search of Madelyn, who had tried opening communications with her father the marquess shortly before her death. Lyn discovered her Caelinian heritage from Kent and Sain, who decided to escort her and Mark to Caelin. However, they found the path there filled with obstacles. Not only did they deal with the Ganelon bandits, but they were also threatened by Lord Lundgren, the marquess's younger brother who sought the throne of Caelin by killing Hausen and Lyn.

Along the way, Lyn slowly gathered more and more followers into her group. This included her friend Florina, the archer Wil (who jokingly dubbed their group "Lyndis's Legion") and a fellow Sacaean named Rath. They also received indirect aid from Eliwood, a nobleman of Pharae who sympathised with Lyn's plight. Lyn also acquired the Mani Katti, a legendary sword that had chosen Lyn as its wielder. Additionally, they protected a young boy named Nils and his sister Ninian from a mysterious organization known as the Black Fang.

Finally in "Chapter 10: The Distant Plains", Lyn and her "legions" made their way to Castle Caelin. They reached the castle after a long battle with Lundgren and his best men. After Lundgren was slain, Lyn made her way to the room were Lord Hausen was lying bedridden and dying. Lyn and her grandfather were finally reunited, and she inspired Hausen to fight his illness and become well again. She remained in Caelin and bonded with her father. Wil and Florina also continue working with Lyn, and they took up jobs at the castle to be near her.

Lyn and Hausen lived in peace for a year. Then in "The Noblewoman of Sacae" (Eliwood Chapter 15, Hector Chapter 16), Marquess Laus led an attack on Castle Caelin. Lyn and her soldiers were reunited with Eliwood, who was on a quest to look for his father, and she also met his friend Hector. They teamed up to enter Castle Caelin and drive out the invaders. To Lyn's relief, Hausen was safe, having been saved by the Ostian spy Leila. Afterwards, Lyn decided to remain with Eliwood's band to battle Darin and the greater enemy, the Black Fang, in order to support her friends and prevent and possible threats to her homeland. During the final battle with Nergal and the dragons, Lyn was also granted a powerful weapon (but not one of the Eight Divine Weapons), the Sol Katti, so she could stand a chance against the deadly enemies. Nergal and the dragon he summoned were eventually slain, thanks to the efforts of Lyn, Eliwood and Hector.

Possible Fates[edit]

Lyn's life after the game is uncertain, due to her not appearing or being mentioned in Fire Emblem: Fuuin no Tsurugi. She has several alternate endings depending on her Support conversations with other players.

  • Default Ending- Lyn entrusted control of Caelin to Ostia and left to live in the Sacae Plains.
  • Eliwood and Lyn's Ending- Lyn and Eliwood are married immediately after the battle, although the controversy of the nobleman marrying a Sacaean nomad caused uproar among the people. Eliwood and Lyn did not mind. In this ending, Lyn becomes the mother of Roy.
  • Hector and Lyn's Ending- Lyn helps Hector to recover from his grief after the death of his brother and his acension to Marquess Ostia. They are married, and Lyn becomes the mother of Lilina.

In all three of the following endings, after Hausen's death, Lyn puts Caelin under Ostian rule and then leaves to live in the Sacae Plains.

  • Florina and Lyn's Ending- Florina comes with Lyn to Sacae. Florina later returns to Ilia, but their friendship lasts forever.
  • Kent and Lyn's Ending- Kent comes with Lyn to Sacae, the two having formed a romance. They live happily there, having received blessings from the people of Caelin.
  • Rath and Lyn's Ending- Lyn was reunited with Rath in the Sacae Plains. They live happily in the plains, and Lyn becomes the mother of Sue.

Support Conversation Summaries[edit]

Lyn is capable of having Support conversations with seven other characters.

  • Eliwood- Eliwood and Lyn spar together. Afterwards, Lyn asks Eliwood to help her by teaching her how to behave like a noblewoman, as she had to attend many banquets in the place of the ill Hausen. But Eliwood tells her that there is no need for her to change herself, and Lyn thanks Eliwood for believing in her.
  • Florina- In the first conversation, Lyn acts overly protective of Florina, even though Florina attempts to tell her that it is her job to protect Lyn. In the second conversation, Lyn reminisces about her first meeting with Florina and the fun they had on the plains. In the third and final conversation, Lyn reveals her yearnings to return to the plains and invites Florina to join her when she does.
  • Hector- Lyn had heard of Eliwood and Hector's sparring matches, and she asks Hector to spar with her for a change. Lyn loses, but she endeavors to defeat him. She says its nothing personal against Hector, but she wants to learn to overcome her limits so she is not a burden to Eliwood and Hector. But Hector assures Lyn that fighting isn't everything, causing Lyn to suspect that Hector was gentler at heart than he seemed.
  • Kent- Lyn asks Kent if he is only serving her because she is the granddaughter of Lord Hausen. But Kent later tells her the truth, that he genuinely cares for her. Kent also promised to always stay at Lyn's side.
  • Rath- Lyn begins to ask Rath why he is always so silent and seems so angry, thinking he is angry at her, but he assures her otherwise. Lyn later asks Rath about his past and finds out how he was exiled from his tribe when he was less than four years old. This leads Lyn to realize that both she and Rath share the feeling of being alone, and she says that she feels safe near Rath.
  • Wallace- While Lyn and Wallace talk about training the others, Lyn learns that Wallace knew Lyn's father. Wallace finds out that Lyn is planning revenge against the Taliver bandits that massacred her family and voices his disapproval for her quest. Wallace then tells Lyn the real reason he came to Bern: he tracked down the Taliver bandits and killed them all to prevent Lyn from being consumed by a quest for revenge.
  • Wil- Lyn learns that Wil hasn't been in contact with his parents in a long time and orders him to write a letter to them. She finds out that Wil hasn't seen them in five years and apologizes for pushing Wil to write the letter. But then Wil tells Lyn the story of how he ran away from home to make a name for himself, and was too ashamed to return or contact his parents when he failed. But Lyn assured Wil that he had changed for the better and told him to write to his parents, and that they would just be glad he was alive.

Other Appearances[edit]

Video Games[edit]

  • In the Super Smash Bros. series, Lyn has been featured as an Assist Trophy starting in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. She attacks enemies swiftly in a manner reminiscent of her critical attack from Fire Emblem. Lyn is also represented by a trophy and sticker in Brawl, a trophy in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and two Primary Spirits in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Lyn's Spirit starts off as an Ace-rank Spirit using her artwork from Fire Emblem. After being leveled up to Level 99, the Spirit could be enhanced into a Legend-rank Spirit of Lyn as a Blade Lord, using art from Awakening and coming with a doubled chance of critical hits. When fought in a Spirit battle, Lyn's Spirit would possess Zero Suit Samus, start the battle armed with a Killing Edge and become stronger when badly damaged. Lyn's Assist Trophy would also attack in the beginning of the battle.
  • Lyn appeared as part of the playable cast of Fire Emblem Warriors. She was the only representative from her game, and she was generally the only Fire Emblem character in the game from the stretch of games between Monshou no Nazo and the DS Shadow Dragon. Lyn was unlocked after completing the main storyline, through a History Mode chapter called "Noble Lady of Caelin". The chapter acted as a partial recreation of the chapter of the same name from Fire Emblem, in which the cast of Warriors had to help Lyn to save Castle Caelin from Validar. In this appearance, she wielded the Sol Katti.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the English version of Fire Emblem, Lyn's age is given as 18 during the prologue. However, in the Japanese version she is instead said to be 15. Her Brawl trophy also gives 15 as her age in all versions.
