Camus is a character who appears in various forms throughout the first Fire Emblem games set in Archaneia and their remakes. He originally appeared enemy unit in the original Shadow Dragon, and after his supposed death, he returned in different disguised forms in the following games: as Ezekiel (or Zeke for short) in Fire Emblem Gaiden and as Sirius in Book 2 of Monshou no Nazo. In his later appearances, he was a potential playable unit.
Background[edit]
The Sable[edit]
Camus was a top soldier from Grust and the leader of the mighty Sable Order, knights who were said to be the strongest in all the world. He hailed from a noble family in Grust and was a member of the Grustian royal court. Years prior to the War of Darkness, Camus met a young Lady Lena from Macedon, who joined the Grustian court at her grandfather's request. The two young nobles shared a friendship, and Camus taught Lena the duty of being a noble.
In the Archanean year 600, King Ludwik of Grust formed a treaty with Dolhr, offering his army as a front against Archanea. While General Lorenz loudly objected to the treaty, Camus stayed relatively silent and obeyed his king's orders. At Ludwik's request, he led the army into Archanea and laid siege to Millennial Palace in the year 602. At Archanea, he led the main assault against Archanea's elite fighters. He was ultimately able to find and defeat King Archanea. After he executed the king, he joined General Gubel in an attempt to capture Princess Nyna. When he found her, he became smitten by her beauty and couldn't bring himself to kill her. Despite the orders he was given, he opted to take Nyna hostage and left her in the care of the Sable Order.
That same year, he launched an assault against the Altean Knights with support from Dolhr and the Macedon Dragoons led by King Michalis at the Menidi River in Gra. The battle was left in a stalemate with King Cornelius not budging from the onslaught of the Sable Order. Only when King Jiol of Gra betrayed the Altean Knights did the battle turn into Camus' favor. Camus was angered by the tactics used to defeat Cornelius, though it was his victory, so Medeus ignored Nyna's survival.
The next appearance of Camus was when he captured the Thieves of Justice trying to rob the Millennial Palace. He apprehended the thieves, and prepared to have them sent to the dungeon, but Nyna convinced Camus to escort them to freedom. Camus laughed at taking orders from a prisoner, yet he complied all the same. He showed Lena and her companions mercy, and he escorted them out of the palace.
In the year 604 Emperor Medeus demanded Nyna to be executed and Camus to be arrested if he would not comply. General Burzack of Dolhr led the Dolhr army against Camus, but he was unable to surprise Camus at the Millennial Palace. The Sable Order had already warned Camus of their arrival, and Camus fled to the Aurelis border. There he sent Nyna ahead to Prince Hardin while he engaged in battle with General Burzack. When Nyna had safely escaped, Camus surrendered to the Dolhr forces. From that point, he was arrested and tortured on the long road back to prison.
When the Archanean League battled King Jiol at Gra, Camus observed the battle at a distance from a nearby village. He anonymously gave Marth a Thoron spellbook which belonged to Bishop Boah. He requested that Marth protect Nyna and claimed that the two men would meet again.
When the League reached the Grusthold, Camus led the army against Marth in battle. Marth and Nyna tried to convince Camus to end the battle and join the League, but Camus would not turn his back on Grust, King Ludwik, and the hostages of Gharnef (Prince Yubello and Princess Yumina). Camus fought valiantly, though in the end he was defeated by the Archanean League, and with him fell Grust and the Sable Order.
The Enigmatic Knight[edit]
In the Archanean year 605, a man with no name or history washed up on the shores of Rigel, the northern kingdom on the continent of Barensia. He was found lying unconscious along the coast and was brought back to Rigel Castle. During this time of recovery, the man was attended by Saint Tatiana a beautiful woman who managed to bring him joy as she tended to him. During his time with Tatiana, he fell in love with her. He eventually proposed to be married; a move which won him the unwavering love of his nurse.
When the man was fully recovered, he appeared before the court of Emperor Rudolf, and the two men formed a firm friendship. Rudolf gave the amnesiac man the name "Ezekiel", and he became known as "Zeke"f or short. Rudolf came to regard Zeke like his own son and trusted him enough that he told him a secret about the saviors of Rigel that few were ever told. Zeke also showed off his skill with weapons before the emperor, and he was awarded a position as high ranking general in the Rigel Empire.
In the year 606, Rudolf backed General Tozeh's coup in Sofia and sent the Rigel army into Sofia. Zeke objected to the campaign, but Rudolf ignored his concerns. Other generals began to suspect that Zeke would lead a rebellion against the empire, so Nuibaba had Tatiana kidnapped to keep Zeke in line. When Alm battled the Rigel army after besieging Nuibaba's mansion, Zeke saw Tatiana among Alm's soldiers. He quickly fought against General Jerome and met Alm after the battle. Zeke explained to Alm that he fought Jerome because he was corrupt, but he couldn't fight against the man who saved him from certain death. As he was about to leave, he noticed a mark on Alm's arm, the mark which identified the savior of Rigel and the world. He vowed to protect Alm and fought in the army up to the defeat the defeat of Doma.
After the war, it was said that Zeke had come to remember this past, but he kept it to himself so that Tatiana would not be burdened by its tragedy. Zeke would later leave home in the year 607 and traveled to Archanea. Despite his disappearance, Tatiana believed that he would return home when his task was complete. If Tatiana was killed during the game, it was instead said that Zeke vanished abruptly after the war ended and was sighted in Archanea afterwards.
The Masked Knight[edit]
In the Archanean year 607, a masked rider known as Sirius appeared in the forest of Grust. He approached Ogma and claimed to have come to protect the future of Grust. The two warriors joined forces to protect Yubello and Yumina from their enemies until Marth's army arrived to help. After the battle, Sirius joined Marth and became a regular unit in his army.
When the Altean Army arrived at Dragon's Altar, Sirius found Princess Nyna and woke her up from her hypnosis. He informed her that Hardin's pain was gone and that Hardin had loved her until the end. She asked if Sirius was Camus the Sable, but he denied the allegation quickly, and then muttered an apology under his breath.
After the war finished, Sirius departed from Archanea, never to be seen again. It was possible that he returned to Barensia to be with Tatiana. Nyna had also disappeared, and it was possible that she was in search of Camus.
Other Appearances[edit]
Video Games[edit]
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he appears as two stages of a Primary Spirit. The initial Ace-rank Spirit is of Camus as he appears in Shadow Dragon. After leveling that Spirit up to Level 99, he can be enhanced into a Legendary-rank Spirit of him as Sirius which also strengthened the power of weapon attacks. When fought in a Spirit battle, Camus's Spirit would possess Marth, and he would be subject to several conditions such as stronger weapon attack power, random chances of delivering critical hits and healing automatically the first time he was badly damaged.
