Mantyke is a small manta ray-like Pokémon that was introduced in the fourth generation games. It was created as the new "baby" form for the second generation Pokémon Mantine.

Information

Mantyke could only hatch from an egg if it was born from a Mantine parent that held a Wave Incense. Mantyke is known as a friendly Pokémon and uses its two antennae to capture the subtle flows of seawater. The pattern on its back is visible to people on ships when they swim past near the surface of the water. They have distinctive patterns on their backs which scientists have discovered to differ by region. People organize tours in which they watch Mantyke skim the tops of waves with Remoraid.

It evolves into Mantine when it levels up while there is a Remoraid in the party, in reference to Remoraid's role as a scavenger for Mantyke (although the party Remoraid will not be affected by Mantyke's evolution).

In Pokémon: Diamond, Pearl and Platinum Versions, Mantyke could be found uncommonly by surfing at Route 223 and Sunyshore City (Diamond/Pearl only). In Black and White, they were commonly found when surfing at Undella Town and Undella Bay.

Other Games

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Mantyke could be recruited at Miracle Sea and Deep Miracle Sea. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Puel Sea. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Coral Sea. Mantyke also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Bright Beach.

Other Appearances

In Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Mantyke have mostly been seen in minor appearances. The Ranger Jack Walker briefly controlled one during the ninth movie, and Ash also used one for part of the Pokémon Triathlon during the Sinnoh series.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Mantyke has only made a minor appearance belonging to a trainer during the Platinum arc.

Trivia

• Its name is a play on "manta" combined with "tyke" (due to it being young).
• The claim about its pattern being different in different regions has yet to be observed within the games, although Mantyke's sprite in Black and White alters the design very slightly.
