Smithy is the evil leader of the Smithy Gang who acts as the primary antagonist and final boss of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and its Switch remake.
Background[edit]
Smithy resided within the heart of his factory, which was located in another dimension known as the Weapon World. Smithy himself was a being who appeared to be entirely or mostly mechanical in nature. He wore a crown and wielded a giant hammer. He appeared to have a large white beard, but his true form lacked the beard and instead had a larger rectangular head with bulging red eyes. He seemed to spend all his time by his Smelter, which produced material that he used to meld machines which were sent off to the production line. His creations were all based on specific weapons and included the boss characters Claymorton, Bowyer, Speardovich, the Axem Rangers and Boomer. Smithy himself was incredibly powerful, but he contented himself with focusing on making more machines while coordinating his creations' actions from behind the scenes.
Within the storyline of Super Mario RPG, Exor landed in Bowser's Keep and acted as a portal from which Smithy's forces began invading the world in which Mario lived. After Claymorton and Bowyer were defeated, Bowyer's surviving minions reported to Smithy what they had overheard from Geno: that during its arrival, Exor had unknowingly shattered the wish-granting Star Road into seven Star Pieces. Smithy became intent on collecting the Star Pieces so that he could use their wishing power to make Mario's world into a world full of weapons and destruction. He managed to obtain one Star Piece, which he wore over his chest, and he sent Speardovich and the Axem Rangers out to search for the remaining Star Pieces, although all of them were defeated by Mario. Mario's group also succeeded in collecting the other six Star Pieces and ended up in the Weapon World, where they fought there way into Smithy's Factory in search of the final Star Piece.
Mario ultimately made it to Smithy's inner sanctum accompanied by his allies: Mallow, Geno, Bowser and Peach. They tried in vain to talk Smithy out of world domination, and then Smithy engaged them in battle. Smithy was beaten in the first part of the battle, at which point he went into a rage against the advice of his underlings, with his tantrum destroying the entire floor they were standing on. They fell down into a darker area that was filled with discarded parts, some of which were identical to Smithy's true head. At this point, Smithy cast away his bearded form and revealed his true self. During the course of the following, final battle, Smithy regularly changed his head into different shapes while battling Mario's group. Ultimately, Smithy lost the battle and exploded, leaving behind the final Star Piece. With that, the Star Road was able to be repaired for good.
Despite his destruction, Smithy was still seen in the ending parade in his bearded form, riding a float that was based on Blade. He used his hammer to squish Claymorton, Bowsyer and Speardovich. It was possible that they were actors or animatronics for the sake of the parade.

During the final phase, Smithy's head and body are considered separate entities. Smithy's head has 8000 HP, and this carries over across different forms. It's the HP of the head that has to be completely depleted to end the battle.
