Piloswine is a shaggy tusked Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. It is the evolved form of Swinub and was the end of that evolutionary line until it was shown to evolve into Mamoswine in the fourth generation. This retroactively makes Piloswine into the middle form of this evolutionary line.

Information

Piloswine evolves from Swinub at Level 33. Its body is covered by a thick coat of shaggy hair which allows it to survive in very cold climates. The downside is that Piloswine's sight is obscured, but this itself is compensated for by Piloswine becoming very sensitive to sound, and it also uses its nose to check its surrounding. Piloswine usually just continually charges at the enemy, while the hairs on its back stand up straight. They have short legs, but they also have rugged hooves which prevent them from slipping on icy ground.

Piloswine is also notable for its pair of tusks which thicken during snowfalls. They use these tusks to dig up food that has been buried underneath ice. Starting in the fourth generation, Piloswine evolves into Mamoswine when it levels up after learning AncientPower ,which it learns either from a move tutor or as an egg move.

Piloswine are rare Pokémon that usually could only be obtained by evolving a Swinub. In Platinum. Piloswine appeared at Route 217 when the Pokéradar was used. In Black and White, they were somewhat common in the Giant Chasm and its crater.

Other Games

A Shadow Piloswine could be snagged from Bodybuilder Lonia at The Under, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Trozei!, it could be found at Secret Storage 6 and Mr. Who's Den. It could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, but in Explorers of Time and Darkness it could be recruited at the first twenty floors of Blizzard Island, the first ten basement floors of Crevice Cave, the first four basement floors of Lower Crevice Cave and the first nineteen basement floors of Mt. Avalanche. In Pokémon Ranger, Piloswine was found at Panula Cave and Sekra Mountain Range. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at Crysta Cave and Hiaburu Field. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Layuda Island and the Ice Temple. Piloswine also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Iceberg Zone.

• In the Pokémon anime, one episode of the Johto series revolved around a Piloswine as it turned out that Pryce's bitterness was due to having lost his Piloswine and thinking it abandoned him years ago. Ash and his friends helped to investigate and found that the Piloswine had actually been frozen solid for all these years while trying to help Pryce. Pryce was overjoyed to discover this and, after it was thawed out, he used it for his battle against Ash. Another episode featured a Nurse Joy utilizing a Piloswine which wore a sled to help the group traverse the Ice Cave. During the Sinnoh series, Dawn's Swinub evolved into Piloswine during a battle with Team Rocket. It initially was as affectionate as it had been as Swinub, but within just a few episodes the Piloswine suddenly became cold, disobedient and overconfident in its abilities. It evolved into Mamoswine during a battle with Team Rocket (having been Piloswine for just two episodes), having been shown using AncientPower earlier in the episode.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Piloswine was featured in a chapter of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc as one of the Pokémon belonging to the Rocket Executive Carl. He had it cause earthquakes at Ecruteak City which brought down the lighthouse, but Gold was able to beat it with his Politoed.

• Its name seems to be a combination of "pilose" (which means "covered in distinct hairs") with "swine".
