Tentacruel is a large jellyfish Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation Pokémon games as the evolved form of Tentacool.

Information

Tentacruel evolves from Tentacool at Level 30. It has eighty different tentacles that it can extend and retract at will by absorbing water. They are normally kept short, but when going on hunts the tentacles are extended to ensnare and immobilize prey. It can sting its prey with toxins on each tentacle. In battle, Tentacruel has been known to extend all of its tentacles to form a poisonous net. It is possible for a Tentacruel to catch one prey per tentacle at a time.

They live in complex rock formations on the ocean floor. They have large red orbs on their heads which glow when they are excited or agitated. A Tentacruel will suddenly flash the orbs on its head to alert others of danger. The orbs also glow just before a Tentacruel unleashes an potent ultrasonic blast, which cause rough waves around the Pokémon.

In Pokémon: Yellow Version, Tentacruel could be caught by fishing on Routes 19, 20 and 21 with the Super Rod. In Pokémon: FireRed and LeafGreen Versions, they could rarely be found by surfing at Knot Island, Kin Island, Chrono Island, Fortune Island and Quest Island.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Tentacruel could be found by surfing at Routes 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 26 (fishing as well), 27 (fish as well), 32, 40 and 41 as well as New Bark Town (fishing as well), Cherrygrove City, Union Cave (fishing as well), Olivine City (fishing as well), Cianwood City, Whirl Islands, Vermilion City (fishing as well), Pallet Town (fishing as well) and Cinnabar Island. In HeartGold/SoulSilver, Tentacruel could also be caught by fishing at Route 47.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Tentacruel appeared only rarely in the Abandoned Ship. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, Tentacruel were found by surfing at Routes 205, 213, 218, 219, 220, 221, 222, 223, 224, 226 and 230 as well as Pastoria City, Valley Windworks, Fuego Ironworks, Canalave City, Iron Island, Sunyshore City and the Pokémon League. In Platinum it also appeared on Route 212 under rainy conditions.

Other Games

Tentacruel could be obtained in Pokémon Pinball and Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire only through evolution. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 11 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Tentacruel could be recruited at the thirty-first through thirty-ninth floors of Stormy Sea, the thirty-fifth through forty-forth floors of Silver Trench and the twenty-first through thirtieth floors of Far-off Sea. A non-playable Tentacruel also appeared in the game as a member of Team Constrictor.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Tentacruel appeared at the first twenty basement floors of Surrounded Sea, the first eighteen basement floors of Miracle Sea, the first four basement floors of Deep Miracle Sea and the first forty-nine basement floors of Bottomless Sea. It appeared in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia at Sea of Wailord. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Tentacruel appeared in the Eastern Sea. Tentacruel also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Bright Beach.

Other Appearances

• One episode of the Pokémon anime series featured Tentacool and Tentacruel rebelling against humans building a hotel atop the coral reef that they lived at, which lead to Nastina offering a prize for their extermination. Team Rocket's attempt to stun them with special sauce backfired, as it instead turned one Tentacool into a giant Tentacruel that lead all the other Tentacool and Tentacruel in ravaging the city. The giant Tentacruel possessed Team Rocket's talking Meowth to act as their mouthpiece until Misty managed to talk them out of destruction, at which point the giant Tentacruel tossed Meowth away and returned to the seas with its brethren, only stopping to send Nastina blasting off as well after she tried to attack it with its back turned. Other Tentacruel have made more minor appearances throughout the series, in the possession of other trainers and sometimes seen in episodes set at sea.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Tentacruel were first shown in a minor appearance early in the Red/Green/Blue arc, where one obstacle in a race was a river filled with them. Koga was later shown briefly using one near the end of the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc. During the Ruby/Sapphire arc, Archie was shown to have a Tentacruel which seemed to be his primary Pokémon which he also used to ride around over water.

• Its name is a play on "tentacle" combined with "cruel".
