Pidgey is a small bird Pokémon and the most basic Flying-type Pokémon of the first generation games.

Information

Pidgey are small and docile birds that are commonly found in forests and woods. They prefer to kick up sand by flapping its wings at ground level to protect itself rather than using straightforward attacks. They try to avoid battle as much as possible and will blow small or weak enemies away with Whirlwind. They also stir up dust clouds to drive insect prey out into the open; it likely eats some Bug-type Pokémon as well, as its evolved forms are said to.

It is also known for its sharp sense of direction, as this bird is said to be capable of finding its way back to its nest no matter how far away it is from normal surroundings. Pidgey evolves into Pidgeotto at Level 16 and from there to Pidgeot at Level 38.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Red, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Pidgey could be found at Routes 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 24 and 25. In Red, Blue and Yellow it also appeared at Route 11 and 21, while in Red/Blue/FireRed/LeafGreen it also appeared at Route 3 and Route 13. In Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen, Pidgey also appeared in the Viridian Forest. In FireRed/LeafGreen, they also appeared at Bond Bridge, Berry Forest and Five Isle Meadow.

In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, Pidgey could be caught at Routes 1, 2, 5, 25, 29, 30, 31, 35, 36 and 37 as well as the National Park. In Gold and Silver they also appeared at Routes 32 and 34. Pidgey are additionally found in Ilex Forest in Crystal and in the Virdian Forest as well as Route 6 in HeartGold/SoulSilver. They could also be caught at the Refreshing Field route of the Pokéwalker, from which they could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Diamond and Pearl, they would appear on Route 229 in swarms after the National Pokédex is achieved, and in Platinum they are uncommonly found at the same route but under normal conditions. In White Pidgey is found at White Forest.

Pidgey was one of the most commonly found Pokémon in Pokémon Pinball, being found at Pallet Town, Viridian Forest, Pewter City, Cerulean City, Vermillion City Seaside and Streets, Lavender Town, Celadon City and Saffron City. In Pokémon Snap, Pidgey appeared in the Beach area. It was also Falkner's partner Pokémon in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge. Pidgey also appeared in Pokémon Stadium, Pokémon Stadium 2, Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness.

In Pokémon Channel, Pidgey apppeared at Viridian Forest on clear or cloudy days. In Pokémon Trozei!, they are found at Endless Level 14, Endless Level 33, Forever Level 14 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, they are found on the first three floors of Tiny Woods and the ninth through thirteen floors of Howling Forest. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness and Time, Pidgey are found in the first nine basement floors of Concealed Ruins as well as the first fifteen basement floors of World Abyss. Additionally, a non-playable Pidgey appears with a Seedot as Team Seedgey.

It also appears in Pokémon Rumble, where it can be found at Windy Prairie. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, they appear at Sky and Forest Temple. Pidgey is also found within Pokémon Rumble Blast at Challengers' Ground.

• In Super Smash Bros. and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Pidgey have made background appearances flying in the background of the Saffron City stage. In Ultimate, Pidgey was also represented by a Novice-rank Support Spirit with the effect of reducing landing lag. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Pidgey's Spirit would possess a tiny Pit in a battle that was subject to heavy winds and focused on jumping.

In Other Media

• A Pidgey was shown in the first episode of the Pokémon anime, where Ash tried in vain to catch it as his first Pokémon by himself due to his rebellious Pikachu ignoring his orders. Pidgey have appeared as Pokémon of various trainers throughout the series or as background creatures due to their common nature. Notable episodes involving Pidgey include one episode about Pudgy Pidgey Island, where a trainer named Wilbur was training his Pidgey Orville to fly due to all of the island's other Pidgey being too hefty to fly. In a later episode, Professor Oak catches a Pidgey and uses it to easily defeat Team Rocket singlehandedly.
• The various manga adaptations based on the first generation games also show Pidgey with primarily minor appearances.

Canceled Appearances

• A beta video for Pokémon Snap showed an appearance by Pidgey, but it was left out of the final game.

Trivia

• Its name is simply a play on "pigeon".
