Dragonite is a large and powerful but ultimately kind-hearted dragon Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It is the third and final form of Dratini's evolutionary line.

Information

Dragonair evolves into Dragonite at Level 55. Dragonite is an extremely rare marine Pokémon with intelligence said to be equal to that of humans. They are rumored to live somewhere in the sea and constantly fly over the seas, often saving drowning people. They also lead lost and floundering ships back to land. There is even said to be a hidden island in the ocean where only Dragonite live.

Dragonite has a big and bulky body, but it's impressive build allows it to fly over rampaging seas without any trouble. It is even capable of circling the world within sixteen hours.

Mainstream Games

Dragonite can usually be obtained through evolution only. The primary exception is in Pokémon: Black and White Versions, where Dragonite have a very rare chance of appearing in a fishing spot outside Dragonspiral Tower.

Other Games

In Pokémon Snap, there is a Dragonite within a whirlpool in the Valley that will only reveal itself for a photograph after three Pester Balls have been tossed into the whirlpool. It could only be obtained through evolution in Pokémon Pinball, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams and Explorers of Time and Space. Dragonite also appeared in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge as Lance's Pokémon. Among the Pokémon e-Reader features, Dragonite was featured in the "Flying Journey" (which depicted it flying around the world) and "Lifesaver" (which depicted it saving a Pikachu from drowning) shorts.

A Shadow Dragon could be snagged in Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness from Miror B. at Gateon Port, and after being purified the Dragonite could be transferred to any of the third generation color versions. That Dragonite was notably the last of the Shadow Pokémon, as the battle could only occur after all the other Shadow Pokémon had been snagged. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Phobos Jet, Trozei Battle and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Ranger, it appeared at Ring Town. In Pokémon Rumble, it appeared at Windy Prairie. Dragonite also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Flower Zone.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Dragonite made a cameo appearance in the background of the Kalos Pokémon League stage when in its Dragonmark Chamber form in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It has also been represented by a trophy in the Wii U game and an Advance-rank Primary Spirit in Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, Dragonite's Spirit would possess a giant Charizard in a battle where dangerously high winds come into play.

Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Dragonite appeared in an early episode where it was gigantic and shrouded in darkness. Bill was trying to reach out to it at night from his lighthouse, believing it to be a new Pokémon species (despite Dragonite having supposedly already been discovered). Team Rocket ruined things by attacking the Dragonite, and it left before Bill could meet it. A normal-sized Dragonite was first shown in a minor appearance in the first Pokémon movie as a messenger sent by Mewtwo. Afterwards, a Dragonite was featured belonging to the Orange League champion Drake (not to be confused with Elite Four Drake at the end of the Orange Islands season. Lance started appearing in the Johto series and had Dragonite as his main Pokémon, while another episode featured a Dragonite that had belonged to Blackthorn Gym's original leader going on a rampage after Team Rocket stole a sacred bowl. Professor Oak and Palmer have also been shown to own their own Dragonite.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Red wound up engaging a wild Dragonite in a tough battle while trying to get HM 03: Surf. Misty managed to help him defeat it, but the HM was broken in the process. In the Yellow arc, Lance was shown with his Dragonite which had skin strong enough to resist lava. It was Lance's strongest and oldest Pokémon that he owned since he was a child and it was a Dratini that had been weakened by pollution.

Trivia

• Its name seems to come from a combination of "dragon" and "knight" and it may also be a play on the mythical dragon stone "draconite".
