Wurmple is a bug-like Pokémon that was introduced in the third generation games. It is known for having a branching evolution path that can ultimately result in it becoming a Beautifly or Dustox.

Information

Wurmple is a small insect Pokémon that lives in tall grass and forests. It uses the spikes on its rear end to peel the bark off of trees in order to feed on the sap that oozes out. Their feet are also tipped with pads that allow them to cling to glass without slipping. Bird Pokémon such as Swellow and Starly target Wurmple as their food, and they usually try to defend themselves by pointing the spikes on their tails at approaching predators and leaking poison from them.

It sticks to tree branches and primarily eats leaves. Wurmple spits a thread from its mouth that becomes sticky upon contact with air and is used to slow down or immobilize foes. It evolves at Level 7 at random (although it can be determined using mathematical equations of its personality value) into either Silcoon or Cascoon.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Wurmple can be commonly found at Petalburg Woods and Routes 101, 102 and 104. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, it can be less commonly found in Eterna Forest and from honey-covered trees, as well as at Routes 204 and 205 in Platinum (where it is more uncommon).

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Wurmple could be found at National Park's special bug-catching contests and by headbutting trees after unlocking the National Pokédex. They could also be found on the Pokéwalker's Hoenn Field, from which any captured Wurmple could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver. In White, they were found at White Forest.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Wurmple could be hatched from an egg. In Pokémon Trozei!, it was found at Secret Storage 7 and 16, Endless Level 12 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be found on the first two floors of Joyous Tower, and in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be found on the first thirteen basement floors of Mystifying Forest, the first twenty-nine basement floors of Mystery Jungle and the first twenty-one basement floors of Midnight Forest. In the latter games, a non-playable Wurmple and a Swellow made up Team Tasty, with the Wurmple being terrified that Swellow would eat him.

It also appeared in Pokémon Ranger, where it was found in Olive Jungle.

Other Appearances

• In the Pokémon anime, May and Jessie were shown catching Wurmple in the same episode of the Hoenn series, and they grew at the same time too. May's Wurmple evolved into a Silcoon and ultimately a Beautifly while Jessie's became a Cascoon and then a Dustox. An episode of the Sinnoh series also featured Aaron meeting a Beautifuly that he had abandoned as a Wurmple when he was young because of how weak it was. The Wurmple had spent the time training itself until it became a Beautifly. Wurmple have also made other minor appearances.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, one of the first chapters of the Ruby/Sapphire arc started with Professor Birch witnessing a Wurmple evolving and being puzzled at it evolving into a Silcoon instead of a Cascoon. This has been the species' only notable appearance.
