Lucario is a powerful Fighting/Steel Pokémon that evolves from Riolu. He was introduced within the fourth generation of games in Diamond and Pearl. In the sixth generation games, Lucario is among the Pokémon capable of Mega Evolution.

Information

A Lucario is a somewhat humanoid creature with an appearance resembling a blue, bipedal jackal. It is covered with three spikes - two on each hand and one on the chest. Its facial fur makes provides the illusion that Lucario is wearing a mask, with two dangling flaps hanging in the back, suggesting a tied knot behind the face.

It possesses the unique ability to sense the aura in other creatures. Using this ability, it can read their thoughts and determine their movements, despite not being a Psychic Pokémon. It is even capable of understanding human speech. Its Aura-reading abilities allow it to see even invisible opponents, and a well-trained Lucario can sense an Aura to identify and take in the feelings of creatures over half a mile away. They are even said to be capable of controlling auras. Lucario are known to hunt in packs, and with their own auras they can crush boulders into dust. However, they can also be easily stressed out by reading the thoughts of others and finding out things that they do not wish to know.

A Lucario will only evolve from a Riolu leveling up during the daytime after reaching full happiness. While Lucario has no natural evolution, it can Mega Evolve into Mega Lucario with the Mega Stone known as Lucarionite. Mega Lucario is believed to be the first discovered Mega Evolution within Kalos.

Mainstream Games

In most appearances, Lucario cannot be found in the wild and is only obtainable by evolving a Riolu, or through promotional Nintendo events. The only exception so far is in Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, where there is a chance that a Riolu, found at Poni Grove, will summon Lucario for help in an SOS Battle.

A Lucario can be obtained from Korrina at the Tower of Mastery in X and Y. She initially lends the Lucario to the player for a battle in which she teaches the trainer how to use Mega Evolution, and she decides to let the player keep it after they complete the lesson.

Other Games

Although not appearing in the game, Lucario is mentioned in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon as the greatest rescue leader of all time, specifically by Alakazam who wants to reach the same level of greatness. By earning 15,000 Rescue Points, the player will be gifted a Lucario statue for reaching the top rank.

In Explorers of Time, Lucario can be found on the eleventh through seventeenth basement floors of the Lost Wilderness. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Lucario appears in Almia Castle as the guardian of the Blue Gem. In Pokémon Rumble, it is found at the Windy Prairie, while in Pokémon Rumble Blast it appears at the Factory area of Sunny Seashore. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Oblivia Ruins, the Thunder Temple and the Light Temple. Lucario also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Flower Zone, while in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond, it was found at the Crag Area.

Lucario appeared as the boss of the Fighters on Ice stage of the Secret Warehouse in Pokémon Rumble U. In Pokémon Battle Trozei, it appeared at Stage 2 of the Mysterious Fountain. In Pokémon Shuffle, it was featured in Stage EX3, one of the Expert Stages. In Pokémon Rumble World, Lucario acted as the boss of the back area of the Super-Aura Test Lab at Origin Hideaway. In Pokémon Picross, it appeared at Stage 03 of Area 16.

Other Appearances

Video Games

• In Super Mario Maker, Lucario appeared as one of the Mystery Mushroom costumes that Mario could transform into. Its costume could be unlocked as a random prize for completing a 100 Mario Challenge on Expert or harder, or by scanning an amiibo of Lucario.

Super Smash Bros.

In the Super Smash Bros. series, Lucario has been featured as a playable fighter starting in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and continuing in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It initially replaced Mewtwo in the roster and bears some similar moves. As in the original games, its attacks involving Aura become more powerful as Lucario takes more damage. In the 3DS/Wii U game, Lucario gaines a new Final Smash in the form of a Mega Evolution into Mega Lucario.

In Brawl, Lucario must be unlocked by playing 100 brawls, beating Target Smash!! on all difficulty levels or getting Lucario to join the party in "The Subspace Emissary". In Ultimate, Lucario could be unlocked through the game's variable-based system for unlocking new characters or by awakening it in Adventure Mode.

Lucario has also been represented by two unlockable trophies (one being of its Final Smash) and a sticker in Brawl, two trophies (plus on of its Final Smash in the Wii U version) in the 3DS/Wii U game and a Fighter Spirit in Ultimate as well as an Ace-rank Primary Spirit for Mega Lucario.

Brawl: Subspace Emissary

Within "The Subspace Emissary", Lucario was first seen meditating atop Glacial Mountain when Meta Knight and the Ice Climbers arrived. Seemingly displeased that his meditation had been disturbed, he then engaged Meta Knight in battle. After the battle, they shook hands and teamed up together to infiltrate and reclaim Meta Knight's Halberd. While exploring the vessel, Lucario discovered Snake within his cardboard box hiding place by detecting his aura. After revealing his hiding spot, he discovered Snake to be good through the color of his aura and stopped Meta Knight from attacking him. The three then continued fighting their way through the Halberd, ending with the battle against the monstrous robot Duon. After Duon's defeat, Lucario and the others united with the main party for the final battles in Subspace.

Ultimate: Adventure and Classic Modes

In the Adventure Mode of Ultimate, "World of Light", Lucario first appeared in the opening cutscene alongside the other fighters who had assembled to oppose Galeem and his Master Hand army. After Galeem unleashed his beams of light, Lucario was seen using Double Team to evade one of the beams. However, he was quickly caught by another beam instead, resulting in his joining the ranks of the fighters under Galeem's control. Lucario could later be awakened and recruited as a playable character by finding him and defeating him along the path to the north of the western side of the bridge over the chasm of light.

Lucario's Classic Mode route in that game was called "Counter Encounters". Lucario's opponents followed the theme of being characters who bore some sort of counter-based attack. The last pre-boss enemy to be faced was Greninja, and Master Hand (with Crazy Hand on higher difficulties) was the route's final boss.

Other Media

• In the eighth move of the Pokémon anime, Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, he plays a major role as being a legendary Pokémon that served alongside Sir Aaron (upon whom Riley is based off). He is frozen in time by Aaron's actions and is later freed by Ash Ketchum and his friends. In the movie, Lucario utilizes the Aura ability frequently and is able to speak to humans telepathically. Within the actual series, other Lucario have appeared in the ownership of Maylene,Riley and Korrina. In the fifth generation-based series, a trainer named Cameron had a Riolu that evolved into a Lucario during a Unova championship tournament battle with Ash and managed to be the key to Ash's defeat.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Lucario made several appearances during the Diamond/Pearl arc as Riley's primary Pokémon and later as Korrina's Pokémon whom she Mega Evolves during the X/Y arc.

Trivia

• Lucario's name is possibly a play on the world "oracle" (due to its extrasensory powers) and could also relate to "Lupaster", a name that is used for a type of Egyptian jackal which Lucario resembles.
