Background
Racing was always a part of Michael's life, even before he was a F-Zero pilot. When he was young, he would often outmaneuver police cars in stolen vehicles. It had always been a part of his life in the gang he joined after his parents were killed in a drive-by shooting. In the gang it was a constant competition for attention - he got his from being the best at racing. So good, in fact, that he is the leader of a racing clan known as the Bloody Chains in the city of Angelopolis on Mandrill 4.
At the group's height, it contained 10,000 members and controlled three planets. Michael joined the F-Zero circuit to represent his organization and his entry was funded by the organization. His lack of wins has caused a lot of members to leave and the organization's membership has drastically decreased. If things continue the way they do, it's rumored the group could dissolve in the next several years. Because of this, he's gotten more aggressive on the track. Oddly enough, he listens to a combination of Heavy Metal and Opera while racing, because it reminds him of his parents.
In the Story Mode of F-Zero GX, Chain and his men attack Captain Falcon on a highway, but he is ultimately forced to retreat after the rest of his gang is beaten. His bonus movie in the game, Hardluck Bodybuilder Michael Chain, depicts Michael straining to flex and get a better ranking from the bodybuilding machine until he overexerts himself and passes out.
Michael Chain also appears as an opponent in the story mode of the anime-based game F-Zero GP Legend, where he is found on Silence and must be raced on both Jody Summer and Jack Levin's story paths. After being defeated by Jody, he sets her off on her quest to find Blood Falcon by telling her that Blood Falcon knows a secret about the death of Jody's brother.

The Wild Boar is a heavily reinforced machine with extensive body work to make it a very powerful crash machine. This works well with Chain's tendency to smash into his opponents during a race. His ship also has the distinction of being the loudest in F-Zero history. It's even been rumored that the four airfoils along the ship's spine were added only to increase the sound output.
Other Appearances
- Michael Chain appeared in several episodes of the F-Zero GP Legend anime. In one episode he attempts to recruit Jack Levin into his gang by posing as the Death God of Destruction, an alias from Jack's past, but Jack ultimately turns the offer down.
Trivia
- Michael Chain and his gang are considered as parodies of real-life Los Angeles-based street gangsters. Angelopolis (the name of the city whom his gang hails from) is an obvious reference to the city of Los Angeles. The location marking of his gang's turf is also a reference to real-life hostile district locations of Los Angeles.
