Tentacool is an aquatic jellyfish Pokémon introduced in the first generation games that is a common sight in seas and oceans. Its evolved form is Tentacruel.

Information

Tentacool has a body that is largely comprised of water, and if removed from water for an extended period of time, it will dry up and dehydrate. Dried up Tentacool remains are usually fond on the shore after a tide goes out. Tentacool mostly drift aimlessly in shallow water and waves. They are difficult to see in the water and will often sting anyone who gets too close, as well as anglers who catch them on accident, with their acid. This is because Tentacool have toxic feelers that they use to sting anything that they touch.

They usually use their long tentacles to ensnare prey which they then infect with the poison stingers located at the tips. Tentacool can also absorb sunlight and refract it within its body to convert it into beam energy, then fire this strange beam out through its transparent, crystal-like eyes. Tentacool evolves into Tentacruel at Level 30.

In Red, Blue, Yellow, Tentacool could be found by fishing at Routes 12 (11 in Yellow), 13, 17 and 18 as well as Pallet Town and Viridian City (or Vermilion and its harbor in Yellow), and by surfing (as well as fishing in Yellow) at Routes 19, 20 and 21. In Yellow, Tentacool could also be found by fishing at Cinnabar Island and surfing in Seafoam Islands. In FireRed and LeafGreen, they were found by surfing at Routes 4, 10, 11, 12, 13, 19, 20, 21 and 24 as well as Cerulean City, Vermilion City, One Island, Three Island, Five Island, Six Island and Seven Island.

In Gold, Silver and Crystal, Tentacool was found by surfing at Routes 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 32, 34, 40, and 41 as well as New Bark Town, Cherrygrove City, Union Cave, Cianwood City, Olivine City, Olivine Harbor, Whirl Islands, Vermilion City, Vermilion Harbor, Pallet Town, Cinnabar Island, and also by fishing at Routes 12, 13 and 32. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Tentacool could be found by surfing or fishing at Routes 12, 13, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, 32, 34, 41 and 47 as well as New Bark Town, Vermilion City, Pallet Town and Cinnabar Island. Through surfing only, Tentacool were found at Routes 19, 34 and 40 as well as Cherrygrove City, Union Cave, Olivine City, Whirl Islands and Cianwood City. Tentacool could also be caught on the Pokéwalker's Blue Lake course, from which it could be transferred to HeartGold/SoulSilver.

In Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald, Tentacool could be found by surfing or fishing at Routes 103, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110, 115, 118, 119, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128, 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, and 134 as well as Dewford Town, Slateport City, Abandoned Ship, Lilycove City, Pacifidlog Town, Seafloor Cavern, Mossdeep City, Shoal Cave, Sootopolis City and Ever Grande City. In Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, wild Tentacool were found by surfing at Routes 205, 213, 218, 219, 220, 221 and 222 as well as Valley Windworks, Pastoria City, Fuego Ironworks, Canalave City and Iron Island. In Platinum, they also appeared at Route 212 under rainy conditions and at Sunyshore City.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, Tentacool could be caught at Pallet Town, Viridian City, Cycling Road and Seafoam Islands. In the Pokémon e-Reader minigames, Tentacool was featured as an obstacle in the diving Corsola minigame. In Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire, Tentacool could be caught at the Ocean while playing on the Sapphire field. Tentacool also appeared in Pokémon Trozei!, where it could be found at Secret Storages 1 and 13, Endless Level 8 and Mr. Who's Den.

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Tentacool commonly appeared in areas such as the first eight floors of Stormy Sea, the first nine floors of Silver Trench, the first nine floors of Far-off Sea, the first nine basement floors of Marvelous Sea and the first nine basement floors of Fantasy Strait. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Tentacool could be recruited at the sixth through ninth basement floors of Brine Cave and the first five basement levels of Lower Brine Cave. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, Tentacool appeared at Eastern Sea. Tentacool also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Bright Beach.

• One episode of the Pokémon anime series featured a group of Tentacool and Tentacruel which attacked the construction of a hotel over their coral reef, which lead to the corrupt owner Nastina offering a reward to those who hunted the Tentacool and Tentacruel. Team Rocket's capture attempt resulted in one Tentacool being drenched in a sauce that turned it into a giant Tentacruel. This Tentacruel possessed Meowth to use as a mouthpiece and lead the other Tentacool in an invasion of the city as revenge until Misty reasoned with them and convinced them to back down, while the hotel's construction was canceled. Some Tentacool have since made minor appearances in several episodes.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Tentacool makes a small appearance in the first chapter as one of the various Pokémon that escaped from Professor Oak's lab which Red rounds up. Several later chapters also showed a member of the Pokémon Fan Club who owned one and apparently like to bathe with it.

Trivia

• Its name is a play on "tentacle" combining it with "cool" (either due to the coolness of the water or referring to a relaxed nature of the Pokémon).
