Spinarak is a small green spider-like Pokémon that was introduced in the second generation games. Its evolved form is Ariados.

Information

Like most spiders, Spinarak use fine yet durable thread to spin webs and entrap prey. However, these webs are considered to be like the Spinarak's second nervous system. It can determine what kind of creature has touched its web just from its vibrations. Spinarak can wait patiently for days on their webs for prey. Even when prey is tangled in the web, a Spinarak will not move until night due to being nocturnal.

Spinarak can evolve into Ariados at Level 22.

Mainstream Games

In Pokémon: Gold, Crystal and HeartGold, Spinarak appeared commonly on Routes 2, 30, 31 and 37. In Crystal, they also appeared on Route 36, and they could also be found by headbutting trees at Routes 33 and 42 as well as Azalea Town. In HeartGold, they could additionally be found by headbutting trees in most areas. In this generation, Spinarak only appeared at night aside from the ones in trees that could be headbutted at any time of the day, and in HeartGold it also appears in the morning on Route 2.

In FireRed and LeafGreen, it appeared at the Pattern Bush, being common in FireRed and rare in LeafGreen. In Emerald, they were uncommonly found at the Safari Zone's extension.

Other Games

In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Spinarak could be snagged from Cipher Peon Nexir at Cipher Key Lab, and after being purified it could be traded to any of the third generation color versions. In Pokémon Trozei!, it appeared at Secret Storage 2 and 12, Endless Level 8 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be recruited at the sixth through ninth floors of Silent Chasm, the sixth through eleventh floors of Northern Range, the twenty-sixth through thirty-second floors of Wish Cave, the twenty-seventh through thirty-second floors of Joyous Tower and the sixteenth through twentieth basement floors of Remains Island. In Pokémon Ranger, it appeared at Lyra Forest and Olive Jungle.

Within Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, Spinarak could be recruited at the first nine floors of Mt. Bristle and the first forty-eight floors of Final Maze. In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it appeared at the Cargo Ship. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Teakwood Forest. Spinarak also appeared in PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure at the Haunted Zone. In Pokémon Rumble Blast, it could be found at the Soothing Shore's tower.

• In the Pokémon anime, Spinarak was initially featured in an early episode of the Johto series where one Officer Jenny used a Spinarak as her main Pokémon. It was vital in catching a classy cat burglar calling himself the Black Arachnid, which led to Spinarak becoming a regular police Pokémon for that city. Spinarak was later the first Pokémon that Bugsy used in his gym match against Ash, briefly fighting his Cyndaquil before losing to his switched-in Chikorita.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, a Spinarak is used by a powerful Team Rocket member during the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc.

Trivia

• Its name seems to be a combination of "spinneret" (the part of a spider's body containing the web fluid) and a play on "arachnid".
