Bugsy is the second gym leader encountered in Pokémon: Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions. He is a trainer of Bug-type Pokémon.

Background

Bugsy was the gym leader of the Azalea Town Pokémon gym. Despite his youth, he had an extensive knowledge of Pokémon and constantly conducted research in hopes of becoming an authority on Bug-type Pokémon. In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, he was eventually challenged and defeated by Ethan/Lyra. After being defeated, he was impressed by the trainer's performance and realized that his research was not complete yet. He gave the trainer the Hivebadge as well as TM 49: Fury Cutter (or TM 89: U-Turn in HeartGold and SoulSilver).

In HeartGold and SoulSilver, he would later travel to the Viridian Forest on Thursdays in search of more Bug-types, and Ethan/Lyra could exchange Pokégear numbers with him there. Bugsy also spent his Fridays at the National Park, where a picture could be taken with him. He also talked about Saturday's Bug-Catching Contest enthusiastically and said that he did not compete in them because he had already won many times. Calling his number on Thursdays (between the hours of 10AM and 8PM) will result in Bugsy appearing at the Fighting Dojo in Saffron City for a rematch.

In Black and White 2, Bugsy competed in the Pokémon World Tournament at Unova, taking part in the Johto Leaders, World Leaders and Type Expert Tournaments.

In Other Pokémon Games

Bugsy appears as an opponent in the Gym Leader's Castle of Pokémon Stadium 2. In this game his line-up instead contains a Scyther, Butterfree, Beedrill, Weepinbell, Pinsir and Pupitar in R1, or a Raticate, Scyther, Pinsir, Sudowoodo, Quagsire and Heracross in R2. Bugsy also appears in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge as the second opponent, using a Kakuna in battle.

In Pokémon Masters EX, Bugsy and his Beedrill appeared as a playable sync pair that could be recruited at random through the game's Sync Pair Scout feature. In battle, he could Mega Evolve his Beedrill by using a sync move. An alternate sync pair of Bugsy with Scyther was also made available through a limited-run Sync Pair-Up Event that initially started in July 2021. Within the game's Main Story, Bugsy was initially featured in Chapter 14, where the player had to fight him and Viola (another Bug-type gym leader) as part of the Pokémon Masters League tournament. He wanted to prove how awesome Bug-type Pokémon were, but he remained content after losing and had Viola take a picture of him with Lottie/Bettie. Bugsy then endeavored to seek out other Bug-type trainers and study how they battled. In the Villain Arc, Bugsy played a role in the Johto chapter where he and Whitney lured members of Team Rocket into Lear's mansion to keep other sync pairs safe, and Busgy was shown to bear a grudge against them due to hearing about their treatment of Slowpoke from Kurt. Bugsy also appeared in some extra scenes of some Story Events in which he admired others' Bug-type Pokémon: Guzma's Golisopod in "Team Skull Crash Course" and Lusamine's Pheromosa in "Family Ties". In the "Kris's Worries" Solo Event, he and Falkner helped Kris to search for her missing Suicune. Bugsy was additionally featured as an opponent in Viola's Sync Pair Story, where he had to be defeated in a one-on-one battle in order for Viola's Surskit to evolve.

• He appeared in one episode of the Pokémon anime, in which Ash Ketchum challenged his gym and defeated him.
• Bugsy appears in several chapters of the Pokémon Adventures manga, where is an archeologist. He and Gold first meet at the Ruins of Alph, where they search for Bugsy's missing archeological team, investigate the secrets of the Unown and battle Team Rocket. Gold initially confuses Bugsy with a girl and asks him on a date before being corrected. During the contest between Kanto and Johto gym leaders, Bugsy is paired against Sabrina and despite having a type advantage, he ultimately loses to Sabrina's cunning. He reappears in the HeartGold/SoulSilver arc, where he, Chuck and Falkner end up attacking Silver due to a misunderstanding, and he later helps Gold and Lance to figure some things out.

Trivia

• His name is a simple play on "bugs". His Japanese name is Tsukushi, which is a play on the Japanese words for 'cicada' and 'insect'.
• In Pokémon Masters EX, he specifies that he dreams of becoming a Bug-type Professor one day.
