Scyther is a speedy, mantis-like Pokémon that was introduced in the first generation games. It originally had no evolutionary line but was discovered to evolve into Scizor in the second generation games.

Information

Scyther is a blindingly fast Pokémon that is known to have ninja-like agility and speed. It leaps out of tall grass and uses the scythes on its forearms to cut prey and to cut through grass. Scyther usually resembles a blur when moving and can create the illusion that there is more than one of it. Its protective colors also make it invisible in grass. Scyther is proud of its speed and moves fast enough that its opponents do not know what knocked them down.

It very rarely spreads its wings to fly, although its speed does increase the effectiveness of its scythes to the point where they can slice through thick logs with one stroke. Scyther's blades grow sharper from cutting through various objects. It evolves into Scizor when traded to another trainer while holding a Metal Coat.

In Pokémon: Red, Yellow and FireRed Versions, Scyther could be rarely found at the Safari Zone and could also be won at the Celadon City Game Corner (for 5500 coins in Red/FireRed and 6500 in Yellow). In Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, they rarely appeared at the National Park during a Bug-Catching Contest.

In Diamond, they rarely appeared at Route 229. In Platinum, it instead was found at Routes 210 and 215, being less rare in the morning.

Other Games

Scyther appeared in the Beach area of Pokémon Snap, where it had to be smoked out of a grassy area with Pester Balls to clearly photograph it. In Pokémon Pinball, Scyther was found at Celadon City and Safari Zone. Scyther also appeared in Pokémon Puzzle League as one of Tracey's Pokémon. In Pokémon Stadium 2, Scyther was featured in the Clear Cut Challenge minigame where up to four players control either a Scyther or a Pinsir and compete in cutting through logs. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, a Shadow Scyther could be snagged from Cipher Peon Leden at Citadark Isle, and after being purified the Scyther could be traded to any of the third generation color versions.

In Pokémon Trozei!, Scyther appeared at Secret Storage 7, Secret Storage 15, Endless Level 15 and Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, it could be found at the eighth through eleventh floors of Sinister Woods, the thirteenth through eighteen floors of Pitfall Valley, the fifteenth through nineteenth floors of Joyous Tower and the thirteenth through nineteenth basement floors of Remains Island. In Pokémon Ranger, it appeared at Lyra Forest. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, it could be recruited at the first thirteen basement floors of Mystifying Forest, the first twenty-nine basement floors of Mystery Jungle and the first twenty-one basement floors of Midnight Forest. A non-playable Scyther also appeared in Explorers as part of Team Razor Wind.

In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, it was found at Almia Castle and Altru Bulding. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it was found at Rand's House. Scyther also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Silent Forest. In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure, it was located at the Meadow Zone.

• In the Pokémon anime, Scyther was first featured in one Kanto episode about feuding gyms, where Scyther was the main Pokémon of one gym while their rival had an Electabuzz. One Orange Islands episode also featured an older Scyther that was the former leader of its pack. It upset Jessie of Team Rocket by shearing her hair and wound up being caught by Tracey, although he rarely used it due to its old age. During the Johto series, Bugsy used a Scyther that was specially trained to repel fire attacks during his gym battle with Ash, but Ash's Cyndaquil was able to attack it through its blind spot. Various other Scyther have appeared throughout the series in the ownership of various trainers.
• In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Blue was shown to have a Scyther as his first Pokémon since childhood. Blue later evolved it into a Scizor prior to the Gold/Silver/Crystal arc.

Trivia

• Its name is a simple play on "scythe", which of course refers to the scythes on its forearms.
