Chuck is one of the eight gym leaders of Johto faced in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions. He specializes in fighting-type Pokémon.
Background[edit]
Chuck was the gym leader of the Cianwood City gym. He was very committed to his fighting-type Pokémon and, like Bruno, sparred with them regularly. Through this, he kept himself in peak physical condition just like his Pokémon. He was very loud and liked to boast of his feats of strength. He was also married to an unnamed wife, who tended to nag him about his weight. Despite his diligence for training, he had a fondness for sweet that could cause him to gain weight.
In Gold, Silver and Crystal he was challenged by Ethan/Lyra and first attempted to prove his strength by tossing a boulder with his bare hands, but after the trainer reminded him that his action had nothing to do with Pokémon, he engaged the challenger in battle. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, he instead meditated under a waterfall and would not notice the challenger until the flow of water stopped. As in the original, it was pointed out to Chuck that his training method had nothing to do with Pokémon. After being defeated, he relinquished the Stormbadge as well as TM01: Dynamicpunch (or Focus Punch in HeartGold/SoulSilver) and promised to train 24 hours a day. This was welcome news to his wife, who thought he was getting flabby. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, he rarely left the gym because of his constant training, but the player could get his Pokégear number by talking to his wife. Calling Chuck on Wednesday nights (between the hours of 8PM and 4AM) would cause him to travel to Saffron City's Fighting Dojo for a rematch. He also appeared by the Cliff Edge Gate, where he talked about the Embedded Tower and was impressed when he heard of Ethan/Lyra's defeat of the Kanto gym leaders.
Chuck reappeared in Black and White 2 as one of the competitors in the Pokémon World Tournament held at Unova. He participated in the Johto Leaders, World Leaders and Type Expert Tournaments.
Pokémon Roster[edit]
In Gold, Silver and Crystal as well as HeartGold and SoulSilver, Chuck has the following Pokémon:
In HeartGold and SoulSilver, he uses the following Pokémon in rematches:
- Medicham
- Hitmonchan
- Hitmonlee
- Breloom
- Primeape

In Black 2 and White 2, his roster for the Pokémon World Tournament could include Poliwrath, Machamp, Hitmontop, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan and either Primeape (in the Johto Leaders Tournament) or Conkeldurr (in the World Leaders and Type Expert Tournaments).
In Other Pokémon Games[edit]
Chuck appeared in Pokémon Stadium 2 as the fifth opponent in the Gym Leader's Castle. He uses Sandslash, Primeape, Poliwrath, Machoke, Hitmonchan and Granbull in R1, and Sandslash, Poliwrath, Hypno, Hitmonchan, Ampharos and Ursaring in R2. He also appeared in Pokémon Puzzle Challenge as the sixth opponent (his spot having been switched with Jasmine's, using a Primeape as his partner. In Pokémon Masters EX, Chuck has made appearances in several story events and been mentioned by characters without having been made playable yet. He first appeared in the "Strongest Fighters" Story Event in July 2022, where and Bruno were taking part in a tournament for Fighting-type trainers. They each sparred against one hundred opponents to train, which Chuck described as the most exciting and satisfying training that he had in a long time, and they gave offered to share Rage Candy Bars with Gloria, Korrina and Bea. Chuck jokingly warned them to be careful not to end up like him. He also appeared with Bruno and Brawly during the "Tour Guide Rosa" Costume Event, in which they presented a challenge for the tour group. He also played role in the Johto chapter of the Main Story's Villain Arc, in which he helped Bruno to cut off Team Rocket's reinforcements.
Other Appearances[edit]
Other Media[edit]
- He initially appeared in an episode of the Pokémon anime which showed him as a bit out-of-shape and showed more of his wife teasing his flabbiness. In that episode, Ash battled and defeated him for the Stormbadge. During a later series, Brawly, a Hoenn gym leader, is revealed to have been a student of Chuck's. Chuck eventually reappeared in an episode of the Pokémon Journeys anime, where Ash revisited his gym to battle Bea as part of the World Coronation Series. Chuck oversaw their battle and prepared a dessert picnic for them afterwards. It was shown that he first met Bea when she was young, during a trip that he took to Galar to learn its karate.
- Chuck appeared in several chapters of the Pokémon Adventures manga, where he was revealed to have trained Blue in his youth. He was first seen meeting with his old friend (who appeared to be Falkner's father), and they battled Suicune together when it arrived to challenge Chuck. At the gym leader's competition, he was paired against Blue, and Blue successfully defeated him to fulfill the promise he made on the last day of their training. He later made an appearance in the HeartGold/SoulSilver arc, where he and several other gym leaders battled Silver due to a misunderstanding, until Chuck realizes that he was an ally of Blue's. He promptly stopped the conflict and let him in.
Trivia[edit]
- His Japanese name is Shijima, named after a cultivar of the Hawthoria plant genus. The word 'shijima' could also mean 'silence' or 'four islands'. Chuck's English name could be a reference to nunchaku or the synonym for throwing. It may also be a reference to memetic martial artist Chuck Norris.
- In Pokémon Stadium 2, all of his Pokémon in both rounds know Dynamicpunch (the move which Chuck gives out the TM of in Gold, Silver and Crystal).
