Yoshi's Woolly World (known as Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World) is a platforming adventure game that was originally released for the Wii U in 2015. It is a spin-off of the Super Mario series starring Yoshi and acts as a spiritual successor to Good-Feel's previous game, Kirby's Epic Yarn, as the game portrays a world where everything is made out of yarn.

Story

This game was set on Craft Island. Kamek placed a curse on most of the island's Yoshis, which turned them into bundles of Wonder Wool. Only two Yoshis managed to escape this treatment, so they went on a quest to stop Kamek and save their friends.

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar to previous Yoshi side-scrolling adventures, with the main changes being based on the yarn aesthetic. One of the most notable differences is that swallowing enemies produces yarn balls instead of eggs, which have a variety of uses such as tangling up enemies or filling in parts of the environment. There are also some areas where Yoshi can undergo special transformations. There are also items that could be collected in each stage. Beads can be used to purchase Power Badges which can be used to give the player a number of effects that are helpful for clearing stages. Flowers were collected to increase the chances of a bonus game at the end of a level and could also unlock a secret level for each world. Yarn Bundles could be collected to unlock new patterns of Yoshis, and Stamp Patches could unlock stamps for Miiverse posts.

The game's normal mode is known as Classic Mode, and there is also an easier Mellow Mode in which Yoshi has wings that can be used without limit to fly through stages. This game also allows two-player cooperative gameplay. When playing with two players, the two Yoshis can swallow and throw each other in order to access out-of-reach areas. Woolly World also has amiibo support. Different effects of amiibos could include summoning a helper Yoshi while playing single-player mode and unlocking extra designs based on other characters.

Legacy

Prior to its release, a stage based on the game and music from it were featured in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Ports/Remakes

  • In 2017, it was released for the Nintendo 3DS as Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. This version omitted the multiplayer mode and replaced Stmap Patches with Pencil Patches, but it included a Poochy Dash mode where the player could play as Poochy, and it also added Poochy-Pups that could help the player locate secrets when playing in Mellow Mode. This version also included more amiibo support, a Yoshi Theater mode with stop-motion movies and the ability to create custom designs for Yarn Yoshi.

Sequels

It would later be followed by Yoshi's Crafted World in 2019.
