Articuno is the first of the original three legendary bird Pokémon from the first generation games which is a type of arctic bird.

Information

Articuno is a bird with powerful ice-based abilities. Its wings appear to be translucent and are said to be made of ice. It has control over ice and can chill the air with its wings, and thus causes snow to fall by flapping its wings. It can even create blizzards out of moisture in the air. Articuno is known to appear to doomed travelers who are lost in icy mountains. Like most legendary Pokémon, its gender is a mystery and it is incapable of producing offspring.

Mainstream Games

Articuno was originally exclusive to Pokémon: Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen. In all of these games one Articuno is found in the fourth basement of the Seafoam Islands. It can also be found at this location in HeartGold and SoulSilver.

Articuno can also be found in Platinum, where the three legendary birds can be found randomly roaming throughout Sinnoh after the player receives the National Dex.

Other Games

In Pokémon Pinball, Articuno can be caught in the Seafoam Islands. An Articuno egg is also found in the Cave area of Pokémon Snap. The egg can be hatched by playing the Pokéflute for a group of Jynx surrounding the egg. Articuno also appears in Pokémon Stadium and Pokémon Stadium 2. In the Pokémon e-Reader line, Articuno made an appearance in the "Magmar and Magby" short where it froze both Magmar and Magby as it flew overhead, but both of them quickly melted their way out to continue their duel.

In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, Grand Master Greevil (the final boss) has a Shadow Articuno in his party that can be snagged. After being purified, the Articuno could be transferred into any of the Gameboy Advance games. In Pokémon Trozei!, Articuno can be found in Mr. Who's Den. In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red and Blue Rescue Teams, Articuno is found in the fifth floor of the Frosty Grotto. Articuno was found on the summit of Mt. Avalanche in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Darkness, and in addition to being recruited it could be battled as a boss for the Icy Flute in a Wonder Mail event. In Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs, it appeared at Mt. Sorbet. Articuno also appeared in Pokémon Rumble at Rocky Cave.

Video Games

• In the Super Smash Bros. series, Articuno initially appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee as one of the Pokémon that could be summoned at random from the Poké Ball item. Articuno would unleash an Icy Wind attack that would freeze and knock back any opponents hit by it before flying away. Articuno has also been represented by a trophy in Melee and the 3DS game, and it was part of a shared Legend-rank Primary Spirit with Zapdos and Moltres in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. When fought against in a Spirit battle, the combined Spirit of the three legendary birds would possess three duplicates of Lucas with enhanced PSI power, due to Lucas having PSI abilities corresponding to each of their elements (PK Freeze, PK Thunder and PK Fire). The battle would also open with Moltres being unleashed from a Poké Ball (due to Moltres being the only one of the three to appear as a Poké Ball Pokémon in the game).

In Other Media

• In the Pokémon anime, Articuno appeared in the second Pokémon movie along with Lugia and the two other legendary bird Pokémon. The world was tossed into chaos when the three legendary bird were captured by a greedy collector, and afterwards the three birds nearly tore the world apart with their conflicts until Ash was able to bring them back into harmony. Articuno later appeared in a three-part episode of the Johto series, where Todd endeavored to snap a picture of one. Noland also is shown to have an Articuno in the Battle Frontier episodes.
• Articuno appears in several chapters of the Pokémon Adventures manga. First in the Red/Blue/Green arc, Articuno is shown to avoid confrontation by sealing itself within ice but defends Red from Team Rocket on the Seafoam Islands. At the end of the arc Team Rocket's fusion machine used the power of the eight Kanto gym badges to fuse the three legendary birds together, but they split apart after being defeated by the combination of attacks from Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise and then set free. In the Gold/Silver/Crystal Green later captures Articuno and the other two birds for use in battle against Ho-Oh and Lugia, and released them afterwards.

Trivia

• Its name is a combination of "Arctic" and "uno" (Spanish for "one", due to Articuno being the first of the three birds; the other two legendary birds have Spanish numbers in their names as well).
